The Golden Compass
The bell tolls. Seven times. The sound hangs in the air, heavy and wet. You stand by the gate. The iron is cold. It bites into your hand. You let go. The village sleeps. The church looms. It is a dark shape against the stars. You walk toward it. Your boots scrape the stone.
You are the keeper. You watch the tower. You have always watched. The wind howls. It sounds like a name. You do not answer. You climb the stairs. One step. Two steps. The air grows thin. You reach the top. The door is open.
Inside, the compass spins. It is gold. It is old. The needle points north. It does not waver. It never wavers. You sit on the floor. The stone is cold. You close your eyes.
A voice speaks. It is not loud. It is close.
"Get up."
You open your eyes. The room is empty. The compass spins faster. The light from the window is pale.
"Who is there?" you ask. Your voice cracks. It is a dry sound.
"Your father," the voice says. "He is here."
You look at the door. It is closed. You push it. It will not budge. You push harder. Your muscles burn. The door stays shut.
"I am not your father," the voice says. "I am the thing that took him."
The needle stops. It points at you.
You back away. Your head hits the wall. Pain flares. White. Sharp.
"Let me out," you say.
"Never."
The walls begin to move. They do not shake. They breathe. The stone expands. The floor tilts. You fall. You land on your side. Your shoulder aches. You try to stand. Your legs are weak.
The compass falls. It rolls across the floor. It stops at your feet. The needle points at you. The gold is bright. It is beautiful. It is a lie.
You remember the oath. You remember the vow. You swore to guard the place. You swore to guard the silence. You broke the vow. You let him in. You let the doubt in.
"Come," you whisper.
The voice laughs. It is a low sound. Like stones grinding.
The door bursts open. Wood splinters. Dust flies. You stand. You face the dark. You do not see a shape. You see a shadow. It is tall. It is thin. It has no face.
You reach for your sword. It is gone. Your hand is empty. You look down. Your hands are bare. They are shaking.
"Where is it?" you shout.
"In your heart," the voice says. "You gave it away."
You try to speak. Your throat is tight. You cannot breathe. The air is thick. It tastes of iron. It tastes of blood.
The shadow steps forward. It has no feet. It glides. The floor crumbles under it. You step back. You hit the wall. There is no room left.
"I am sorry," you say. The words are small. They do not matter.
The shadow reaches out. A hand forms. It is made of smoke. It is made of night. It touches your face. It is cold. It is not painful. It is an ending.
You close your eyes. You think of your mother. You think of her hands. They were rough. They were kind. She used to sing. The song is in your head. It is the last thing you have.
The cold spreads. It moves from your face to your chest. It moves to your legs. You feel yourself fading. You feel yourself becoming light.
The compass spins. It is the only thing left. It is the only truth.
You wake up.
The bell tolls. Seven times. You are by the gate. The iron is cold. You are holding it. Your hand is shaking.
The village wakes. The sun rises. The light is weak. It is gray.
You look at the tower. It stands. It is whole. The door is closed. The window is dark.
You walk away. You do not look back. You walk to the square. The people are there. They stand in a line. They wait.
The mayor is there. He is old. His face is full of lines. He looks at you. He does not smile.
"Report," he says.
You open your mouth. Your throat is dry. You swallow.
"I failed," you say.
The mayor nods. He looks at the ground.
"Did you kill it?" he asks.
"No."
"Did it kill you?"
"No."
The mayor looks at you again. His eyes are hard. They are like flint.
"Then you are free," he says.
You look at him. You do not understand.
"Free?" you ask.
"The tower is empty," he says. "The compass is gone. The spirit is gone. You are done."
You feel a rush of air. It is sudden. It is sharp. You feel light. You feel broken.
"Where is the compass?" you ask.
"Lost," the mayor says. "Or maybe it was never there."
He turns away. He walks to his cart. The other people turn. They walk home. They do not look at you. They do not speak to you.
You stand alone. The square is quiet. The wind blows. It picks up leaves. It blows them across the stone.
You look at your hands. They are clean. They are empty. You flex your fingers. They move. They are yours.
You walk to the edge of the town. The trees are there. They are bare. They reach for the sky. You stop. You look at the ground.
There is a glint. It is small. It is bright. You kneel. You pick it up. It is a shard of gold. It is sharp. It cuts your thumb. Blood beads. It is red. It is warm.
You hold the shard. It is warm. It is alive. It pulses. It matches your heartbeat.
You remember the tower. You remember the dark. You remember the cold. You remember the song.
You put the shard in your pocket. You stand up. Your leg aches. It will heal. It will hurt for a while.
You walk back to the center. The mayor is still there. He is loading the cart. He sees you. He stops.
"Come back?" he asks.
You look at him. You look at the shard in your pocket. You feel the heat. You feel the weight.
"No," you say.
You walk past him. You walk to the well. The water is dark. You look into it. You see your face. It is pale. It is tired. It is yours.
You drink. The water is cold. It clears your head. It clears your mind.
You sit on the edge of the well. The stone is rough. It fits your back. You lean. You close your eyes.
The sun rises. The light hits your face. It is warm. It is real.
A bird sings. It is high. It is clear.
You open your eyes. The village is waking. The smoke rises from the chimneys. It curls into the air. It is white. It is soft.
You stand up. Your legs are steady. You feel the shard in your pocket. It is still warm. It is still pulsing.
You do not know what it is. You do not know what it means. You do not know where you are going.
You take a step. Then another. You walk out of the square. You walk down the lane. The grass is wet. It sticks to your boots.
You do not look back. You do not need to look back. The tower is behind you. It is a shadow. It is a memory.
You are free. The cost is high. The cost is you.
You walk on. The road is long. It is straight. It leads to the horizon. The sky is wide. It is blue. It is endless.
You breathe. You are alive. You are here.
The shard burns in your pocket. It is a fire. It is a star. It is a piece of the dark.
You do not take it out. You do not throw it away. You carry it. You carry the weight. You carry the pain.
You walk. The sun gets higher. The shadows shorten. The world is bright. The world is hard.
You are not alone. You are with the shard. You are with the memory. You are with the choice.
You keep walking. The road is under your feet. It is solid. It is real.
You do not stop. You will not stop. You have nowhere to go. You have everything to lose.
You are free.
