The Distant Threshold
The glass beads shatter. This is not a metaphor. It is a sound. It is the sound of your arrival.
You walk into the town of Halloway’s Rest. The mist is thick. It clings to your coat. You are a stranger. You are a ghost. You carry a bag. The bag is heavy. It holds your life. It holds your past. It holds the mirror.
The town is old. Stone streets. Slate roofs. The air smells of rain and iron. People look at you. Their eyes are flat. They do not ask your name. They do not ask where you came from. They see you. They know what you are. They fear what you carry.
You stop at the well. You drink. The water is cold. It bites your tongue. You look into the water. Your face is there. It is not your face. It is a mask. It is a lie.
“Who goes there?”
A voice. High. Sharp. It cuts the air.
You turn. A woman stands by the gate. She is old. Her face is a map of wrinkles. Her eyes are bright. They are black. They are deep. She holds a broom. She holds a key. The key is silver. It is cold. It is heavy.
“I am no one,” you say. Your voice is rough. It is dust.
“Lies,” she says. She steps closer. The broom scratches the stone. “You are the one who breaks.”
“I do not break,” you say. “I mend.”
She laughs. It is a dry sound. Like leaves. “We do not mend. We wait. We watch. We see.”
She looks at the bag. Her eyes narrow. “What is in there?”
You hold the bag tighter. Your fingers dig into the strap. “Nothing.”
“Everything.” She steps into the light. The moon is behind her. She is a silhouette. A shadow. “Show me.”
“No.”
“Show me.”
“It is mine.”
“It is ours.”
She extends her hand. The key dangles. It sways. It sings. A low note. A warning.
You look at her hand. You look at the key. You feel the weight of the bag. You feel the heat of the glass inside. You think of the fire. You think of the smoke. You think of the people you left behind. You think of the ones who died. You think of the ones who lived.
You open the bag.
You pull out the necklace. The beads are blue. They are clear. They are perfect. They are whole.
She gasps. She steps back. Her face changes. The wrinkles smooth. The fear vanishes. It is replaced by something else. Something ancient. Something hungry.
“Ah,” she says. “So it is true.”
“What is true?” you ask.
“The curse.”
“I have no curse.”
“Look at your hands.”
You look. Your hands are shaking. Your fingers are stained. They are stained with blue. The glass dust is in the creases. It is in the pores. It is in the blood.
“It is in you,” she says. “It has always been in you. You are the vessel. You are the crack.”
“I am not a vessel.”
“You are the door.”
She points to the house. The big house. The house with the many windows. The windows are dark. The windows are eyes.
“Go,” she says. “Go in. They are waiting.”
“Waiting for what?”
“For the break.”
You walk toward the house. Your legs are heavy. Your heart is loud. You can hear your blood. You can hear your breath. You can hear the glass. It is humming. It is singing. It is crying.
The door is open. The door is black. You step inside.
The room is large. The room is empty. There is a table. The table is wood. The wood is old. The wood is dark. There are chairs. The chairs are empty. But they are not alone.
The people are there. They are not people. They are shapes. They are shadows. They are made of smoke. They are made of mist. They surround the table. They look at you. They do not speak. They do not move. They just look.
You feel their gaze. It is cold. It is sharp. It cuts your skin. You feel the pain. You feel the heat. You feel the weight.
You place the necklace on the table. The beads are still. They are still blue. They are still clear.
“Is this it?” you ask. Your voice is small. Your voice is weak.
The shadows lean forward. They whisper. The whisper is loud. It is in your head. It is in your bones.
*Break it.*
*Break it.*
*Break it.*
You reach for the necklace. Your hand trembles. You lift it. The beads are cold. They are hard. They are strong.
You close your fist. You squeeze. You squeeze hard. You squeeze until your fingers bleed. You squeeze until your bones ache. You squeeze until you are angry. You squeeze until you are afraid.
The glass does not break.
You squeeze harder. You scream. The sound is ugly. The sound is raw. The sound is human.
The shadows laugh. The laugh is cruel. The laugh is cold.
*You are weak.*
*You are small.*
*You are nothing.*
You drop the necklace. It falls. It bounces. It rolls. It stops.
The beads are whole. The beads are blue. The beads are clear.
You look at the shadows. You look at the table. You look at your hands. Your hands are open. Your hands are empty. Your hands are clean.
You feel a change. The air changes. The light changes. The shadows fade. They dissolve. They disappear. The room is empty. The room is quiet. The room is still.
You look at the necklace. It is on the floor. It is broken.
The beads are scattered. They are shards. They are pieces. They are dead.
You did not break it. The room broke it. The town broke it. The fear broke it. The expectation broke it.
You pick up a shard. It cuts your finger. A drop of blood. It is red. It is bright. It is life.
You look at the blood. You look at the glass. The blood mixes with the glass. The glass turns red. The glass turns dark. The glass turns black.
You understand.
You are not the one who breaks. You are the one who holds. You are the one who carries. You are the one who endures.
The curse is not in the glass. The curse is in the waiting. The curse is in the fear. The curse is in the belief that you are broken.
You are not broken. You are whole. You are the stone. You are the well. You are the mist.
You stand up. You walk to the door. You open the door. The night is cold. The mist is thick. The town is sleeping. The town is watching.
You walk out. You walk past the gate. The old woman is there. She is watching. She is smiling. Her smile is sad. Her smile is kind.
“Did you do it?” she asks.
“I did nothing,” you say.
“Then you did everything.”
She steps aside. She holds the key. The key is still silver. The key is still cold.
You walk away. You walk into the mist. You walk into the dark. You walk into the unknown.
You do not look back. You do not need to. You feel the town behind you. You feel the weight of the past. You feel the lightness of the present.
You are free. You are alone. You are yourself.
The glass is gone. The shards are gone. The blood is gone. The fear is gone.
You are here. You are now. You are alive.
The mist clears. The sun rises. The light is gold. The light is warm. The light is new.
You take a breath. The air is sweet. The air is clean. The air is yours.
You walk on. You walk forward. You walk into the day. You walk into the world. You walk into the life.
You are the threshold. You are the door. You are the path.
You are the way.
