The Distant Blade

You leave the apartment. The door slams. It shakes the frame. You check the lock. You turn the handle. It does not open. You are out. The air is cold. It bites your skin. You walk fast. Your breath is a cloud. It vanishes. The city is awake. It hums. It grinds. You are small. You are new. You have no money. You have no name here. Only a face. And a bird.

The bird is in your hand. It is small. It is blue. It is silent. Its eyes are black. They are voids. It does not flutter. It does not call. It looks at you. It knows. You know. This is the first thing you remember. Not your birth. Not your mother’s face. The bird. It was always there. In your pocket. In your coat. In your palm. It weighs nothing. It weighs everything. You walk to the subway. The turnstile is broken. You hop the fence. You do not feel guilty. Guilt is for those who have roots. You have soil. You have dust. You are a ghost in a city of ghosts.

The train is full. Bodies press together. Sweat and wool. Coffee and fear. You stand. You hold the bird. It fits in your fist. A tight ball of feathers. A heart beating. Someone bumps you. An old man. His face is a map of lines. He looks at you. He looks at the bird. He smiles. It is not a kind smile. It is a recognition. He steps aside. The doors open. You stay. The bird stays. You ride to the end. You get off. The platform is empty. It is dawn. The light is grey. It is hard.

You find a job. It is hard. It is cleaning. You scrub floors. You empty bins. The smell is stale. It is rot. You work twelve hours. You sleep on a cot. It is in the basement. It is dark. The bird is with you. It sits on the wire. It watches. You eat soup. It is thin. It is hot. You drink it. You are hungry. Always. The boss is a woman. Her name is Mrs. Vane. She is strict. She counts the coins. She weighs the gold. She looks at you. She sees a worker. She does not see the bird. Or she pretends. She pays you. It is not enough. You survive. You do not thrive. You exist.

Months pass. The seasons turn. Winter comes. It is cruel. The wind howls. It screams. You shiver. The bird shivers. It is the same shiver. You understand. You are not alone. You are together. This is enough. You think. But the hunger remains. The cold remains. The city remains. It is a machine. It eats people. It spits out trash. You are trash. You are fuel. You burn. You burn bright. You burn out.

Then you meet him. His name is Julian. He is tall. He is pale. He wears a coat that is too clean. It is silk. It is white. He works in a tower. He is a writer. He is famous. You do not know him. You see him in the park. He is eating bread. He throws crumbs. The pigeons swarm. He watches them. He looks sad. He looks lost. You watch him. You hold the bird. The bird looks at him. The bird tilts its head. You feel a pull. It is strange. It is old. You walk away. You do not speak. You should not speak.

But you do.

You see him again. And again. He is always alone. He is always watching. One day, he stops. He looks at you. He sees the bird. He stops breathing. His face changes. It crumbles. It rebuilds. He walks to you. His steps are heavy. He stops. He is close. The air is thick.

"It’s here," he says. His voice is low. It is a whisper. It is a crack.

You nod. You do not speak. You cannot. Your throat is tight. You open your hand. The bird steps out. It hops. It lands on his finger. He does not flinch. He holds it. He holds it like a relic. Like a bomb. He looks at you. His eyes are wet. They are dry. They are empty.

"Who are you?" he asks.

"I am no one," you say. Your voice is rough. It is unused. It is new.

"You are not no one," he says. He shakes his head. "You are the keeper. You are the thief."

"I am a cleaner," you say.

"You are the one who took it from me," he says. He pulls back. He steps back. His face is hard. It is stone. "I left it. I let it go. I thought I was free. I was wrong. It was never mine. It was always yours."

You feel a pain. It is sharp. It is deep. It is in your chest. It is in your soul. You look at him. You look at the bird. The bird looks at you. It does not care. It is eternal. It is indifferent.

"I didn't take it," you say. "It chose me."

"Everything chooses you," he says. "That is the curse. That is the trap. You cannot escape. You can only carry it. You can only hold it. Until you break."

He leaves. He walks away. He does not look back. The bird stays. It stays with you. You are alone. Again. The pain is worse. It is a blade. It is cold. It cuts. You go back to the basement. You sleep. You dream. You dream of a tree. It is huge. It is old. It is falling. It falls slowly. It falls forever.

Days pass. The hunger grows. The cold bites. You are sick. You are weak. The bird is weak. It does not move. It does not eat. It sits. It waits. You feed it. You give it crumbs. You give it water. It refuses. It is dying. Or it is leaving. You do not know. You do not care. You are tired. You are so tired.

Mrs. Vane comes. She is angry. She is loud. She throws money on the table. It is a coin. It is gold. It is heavy. It is warm.

"You are fired," she says. "You are sick. You are useless. Take your pay. Leave."

You pick up the coin. It is warm. It is alive. You put it in your pocket. You walk out. The city is night. It is dark. It is wet. The rain falls. It is cold. You walk. You walk fast. You run. You do not know where. You do not know why. You run to the park. You run to the bench. You sit. You are empty. You are hollow. You look at the bird. It is still. It is quiet. It is still there.

You open your hand. You release it. You let it go. You let it fly. It does not fly. It stays. It looks at you. It blinks. It is alive. It is not dead. It is not leaving. It is waiting. You are waiting. You are both waiting. For what? For the end? For the beginning? For the truth?

The truth is this. You are not the keeper. You are not the thief. You are not the victim. You are the cycle. You are the wheel. You are the turn. The bird is the seed. You are the soil. It grows. It dies. It grows again. It dies again. It is not a curse. It is a law. It is a fact. It is the world.

You stand up. You feel strong. You feel heavy. You feel light. You look at the city. It is vast. It is bright. It is indifferent. You are part of it. You are small. You are big. You are everything. You are nothing.

You walk. You walk into the night. You walk into the crowd. You are lost. You are found. You are free. You are bound. You hold the bird. You hold the weight. You hold the pain. You hold the love. It is primal. It is wild. It is beyond reason. It is beyond time.

You do not speak. You do not shout. You do not weep. You walk. You breathe. You live. You die. You live. The bird sings. It is a single note. It is pure. It is clear. It cuts the air. It cuts the dark. It cuts the silence. It is the sound of the world turning. It is the sound of the wheel. It is the sound of the end. It is the sound of the start.

You close your eyes. You feel the feathers. You feel the heat. You feel the life. You are not alone. You are never alone. You are the blade. You are the sheath. You are the cut. You are the scar. You are the healing. You are the wound. You are the knife. You are the hand. You are the heart.

The city sleeps. The city dreams. You wake. You rise. You step forward. The bird flies. It circles. It hovers. It lands. It is here. It is now. It is always. You are here. You are now. You are always. The loop closes. The loop opens. The blade is distant. The blade is near. The blade is you.

You smile. It is small. It is sad. It is brave. It is true. You walk on. The night is long. The night is short. The bird is with you. The bird is in you. The bird is you.

You are the distant blade. You are the close cut. You are the endless turn. You are the eternal hold. You are the silent song. You are the living death. You are the dead life. You are the story. You are the teller. You are the listener. You are the silence between the words. You are the breath after the sigh. You are the space. You are the time. You are the end.

The end is a beginning. The beginning is an end. The bird sings. The song fades. The song remains. The city sleeps. The city wakes. You sleep. You wake. The blade is still. The blade is sharp. The blade is yours. The blade is ours. The blade is the world.
