The Wistful Cipher

You leave the gate open. It is a sin. The town knows it. The wind howls through the crack, carrying the scent of wet wool and old blood. You are the Warden. You have been the Warden for ten winters. Your hands shake. Not from cold. From hunger.

"Is it done?" asks Thomas. He stands in the shadows. His face is pale. A mask of bone. He wears the grey cloak of the outcasts.

"It is done," you say. Your voice is gravel. It scrapes the back of your throat. "The seal is broken."

Thomas smiles. It is a thin smile. Like a crack in ice. "Good. The hunger returns tonight."

You look away. You look at the wall. The stone is cold. It bites into your fingers. You remember your brother. Eli. He died of the fever. He had your eyes. He had your jaw. He did not have your strength. He was soft. You are hard. You are stone.

The town is asleep. But the dogs bark. Low. Deep. They know. Animals always know. The air is thick with mist. It clings to your skin like a ghost. You feel the weight of the iron key in your pocket. It is heavy. It is warm. It burns.

"Come," Thomas says. "We must go to the Well."

The Well is in the center of the square. It is old. Older than the church. Older than the castle. The water is black. It does not reflect the moon. It swallows the light. People say the water remembers. They say it holds the sins of the town. You have never believed them. You are a soldier. You believe in steel. You believe in law. You do not believe in water.

But the law is broken. The seal is broken.

You walk. Thomas walks beside you. His steps are light. He moves like smoke. You move like lead. The cobblestones are slick. Your boots slip. You catch yourself. Your heart pounds. It is a drum. It beats in your ears.

"Are you afraid?" Thomas asks.

"No," you say. A lie. It tastes bitter.

"You should be." He stops. He turns to you. His eyes are bright. They shine in the dark. "It is coming."

You look up. The sky is black. There are no stars. The clouds are low. They press down on the rooftops. The air is still. Too still. The silence is loud. It screams.

Then, you hear it. A sound. A whisper. It comes from the Well. It is a voice. It is your brother’s voice.

"Let me go."

Your breath stops. Your chest tightens. You stumble. You grab the rail of the Well. The metal is ice. It numbs your hands.

"Who is there?" you shout. Your voice cracks. It is not your voice. It is weak. It is small.

"Let me go," the voice says. It is soft. It is sweet. It is a knife in your heart. "I am cold. I am hungry. Let me go."

Thomas watches you. He does not look surprised. He looks sad. He looks pitying.

"Do you hear it?" he asks.

"I hear it," you say. Your tears fall. They hit the stone. They disappear. "It is him. It is Eli."

"It is not him," Thomas says. "It is the hunger."

You pull back. You look at the water. The surface ripples. No wind blows. The ripples spread. They form a face. It is Eli’s face. His mouth opens. It gapes wide. It shows no teeth. Only darkness.

You back away. Your legs give way. You fall. You hit the ground. You taste dirt. You taste blood. You hit your head. Pain blooms. White. Hot. Bright.

"Get up," Thomas says. His voice is far away. "Get up, Warden. You must stop it."

You try to stand. Your arms are heavy. They are wet. You look down. Blood flows from your head. It drips onto the stone. Red drops. Like roses. Like wounds.

The voice from the Well grows louder. It is not one voice now. It is many. They chant. They moan. They scream.

"Free us. Free us. Free us."

You crawl. You crawl toward the Well. Your fingers scrape the stone. You leave trails of blood. You are not a soldier anymore. You are a child. You are small. You are weak.

Thomas stands over you. He holds a knife. It is short. It is black. It gleams in the dark.

"Give me the key," he says.

"No," you whisper. "No."

"You have to." His voice is gentle. It is kind. It is the voice of a priest. "You cannot hold it. You are breaking. Look at you. You are bleeding. You are dying."

You look at the key. It is in your hand. You have not let go. You will not let go.

"If I give it," you say, "the town dies."

"The town is already dead," Thomas says. "It has been dead for years. We are just waiting for the end. The seal was a lie. A trap. It kept the hunger inside. It kept us inside. It kept us bound. Give it to me. I will break it. I will free us."

You look at his face. You see the truth. It is not kindness. It is hunger. It is the same hunger as the Well. It is the same hunger as the void.

"You are not free," you say. "You are hungry."

Thomas’s face changes. The kindness vanishes. The mask cracks. His eyes are wild. They are red. They are full of fire.

"You are a fool," he hisses. "You are a coward. You would keep us chained for your pride. For your law. You are a jailer. Not a man."

He lunges. He swings the knife. You dodge. It cuts your arm. Pain shoots up your shoulder. You scream. You swing your fist. You hit him. You hit him again. You hit him with the iron key. It clangs against his skull. He staggers. He falls.

You stand. You are alone. The Well screams. The voices are louder. They are angry. They are furious.

You look at the key. You look at Thomas. He is lying on his back. His eyes are closed. Blood flows from his temple. It mixes with the mist. It is a pool of red.

You walk to the Well. The voices stop. They wait. They watch.

You hold the key over the water. You look at the face in the water. It is no longer Eli’s face. It is your face. It is old. It is tired. It is empty.

You drop the key.

It hits the water. There is no splash. It sinks. It disappears. The water turns clear. The blackness vanishes. The moon appears. It is bright. It is cold. It is beautiful.

The voices stop. The silence returns. But it is not the screaming silence. It is the silence of death. It is the silence of peace.

You fall to your knees. You vomit. It is black. It is thick. It is the taste of fear. It is the taste of loss.

You look at your hands. They are clean. They are empty. You are free. The seal is broken. The hunger is gone. Or so you think.

Thomas stirs. He opens his eyes. They are clear. They are calm.

"Did it work?" he asks. His voice is weak. It is a whisper.

"Yes," you say. You do not look at him. You look at the Well. The water is still. It reflects the moon. It is beautiful. It is terrifying.

"It is not over," Thomas says.

"What do you mean?"

"The hunger was not in the Well," he says. "The hunger was in us. The seal did not keep the hunger in. It kept the memory out. It kept the pain out. Now the memory is back. The pain is back."

You feel it. A sharp pain in your chest. It is like a stab. It is like a hook. It pulls. It twists. You gasp. You clutch your heart.

"Eli," you whisper. "I forgot. I forgot his face. I forgot his voice. I forgot his death."

The memory hits you. It is a wave. It drowns you. You see him. He is young. He is laughing. He is holding a flower. It is white. It is fragile. He gives it to you. He says, "Keep it safe."

Then, you see the fever. You see the sweat. You see the struggle. You see him die. You see him close his eyes. You see him go.

You forgot. You buried it. You built the wall. You became the Warden. You became the stone. You became the shield.

But the shield is gone. The stone is cracked.

You look at Thomas. He is smiling. It is a sad smile. It is a final smile.

"I am sorry," he says. "I could not let you forget. I could not let you be free. Freedom is a wound. It never heals. It only bleeds."

You try to speak. You cannot. Your mouth is dry. Your throat is closed.

Thomas closes his eyes. His breathing slows. It stops. He is gone. He is still.

You are alone. The moon shines on the square. The mist clears. The town is visible. The houses are dark. The windows are empty. The people are gone. They have left. They have fled. They cannot live with the truth. They cannot live with the pain.

You are the only one left. You are the Warden. You are the keeper of the grave. You are the keeper of the pain.

You stand up. Your legs are weak. You sway. You look at the Well. The water is clear. It is cold. It is deep.

You pick up the stone. It is heavy. It is rough. It cuts your palm. You do not care. The pain is good. The pain is real. The pain is life.

You throw the stone into the Well. It hits the water. It sinks. It makes a ripple. The ripple spreads. It breaks the reflection. It breaks the moon. It breaks the sky.

You sit on the ground. You wait. You wait for the end. You wait for the hunger. You wait for the death.

But nothing comes. The silence remains. The cold remains. The truth remains.

You look at your hands. They are trembling. They are dirty. They are human.

You are free. You are broken. You are alive.

You close your eyes. You remember the flower. You remember the laugh. You remember the love. It is primal. It is raw. It is the only thing that matters.

The wind blows. It is cold. It is sharp. It cuts your face. You do not move. You do not hide. You let it hit you. You let it burn. You let it sting.

You are the Warden. You are the victim. You are the survivor.

You are free.

The pain is the price. You pay it. You pay it all.

You open your eyes. The sun rises. It is red. It is bloody. It is new.

You stand. You walk. You walk out of the square. You walk out of the town. You walk into the forest. The trees are dark. The path is narrow. The ground is soft.

You walk. You do not stop. You do not look back. You do not hope. You do not fear.

You walk. You bleed. You live.

The seal is broken. The story is told. The wound is open.

It will never close.

It will never heal.

It will only bleed.
