The Pale Meridian

The house burned. Not with a roar, but with a sigh. You watched the smoke curl from the gable, thin and grey, against the white sky. It was a Tuesday. You remember that because the milkman had just left. His van idled at the end of the drive, engine ticking in the cold. You stood on the porch. You held a glass of water. Your hand did not shake. That was the first thing that was wrong. You were Eleanor. You were the one who watched. You were the one who did not move.

"Did you see it?"

The voice came from behind you. Thomas. He was still in his nightshirt. He looked small. He looked tired. He always looked tired lately.

"I saw it," you said. Your voice sounded flat. Like a stone dropped in a well.

"Call the fire department."

"I can't."

"Why not?"

You turned to him. You looked at his face. You looked for the fear. You found only confusion. You found only the mirror of your own stillness.

"Because it is already done," you said.

Thomas stepped forward. He took the glass from your hand. He drank the water. He swallowed. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. He looked at you. He looked at the house. He looked at you again.

"Eleanor," he said. "What are you talking about?"

You smiled. It was a small smile. It did not reach your eyes.

"I am talking about the end," you said. "I am talking about the beginning."

You went inside. The heat was not there yet. The air was cold. It smelled of dust and old paper. You walked into the living room. You walked into the kitchen. You walked into the bedroom. You touched the walls. They were dry. They were cold. You touched the bed. The sheets were smooth. You touched the mirror.

Your reflection looked back at you. It did not blink. It did not breathe. It just watched. It watched you with a hunger that was not yours. It was a hunger that had been building for years. It was a hunger that had eaten your joy. It was a hunger that had eaten your voice.

You sat on the edge of the bed. You put your head in your hands. You closed your eyes. You felt the weight of the room. You felt the weight of the years. You felt the weight of the silence.

"You are sick," Thomas said. He was in the doorway. He looked pale. He looked afraid. "Eleanor, you are sick."

"I am not sick," you said. You did not look up. "I am awake."

"Come outside," he said. "The air is bad."

"I do not need air."

"You need help."

"I need you."

He stepped into the room. He stood over you. He reached out. He touched your shoulder. His hand was warm. It was the only warm thing in the world. You leaned into him. You leaned into the heat. You leaned into the life.

"Tell me," you said. "Tell me what I have done."

"You have done nothing," he said. "You have been here. You have been quiet. You have been safe."

"Safe is not enough," you said.

"It is enough for us."

"It is not enough for me."

He pulled back. He looked at you with anger. It was a new thing. It was a sharp thing. It cut the air.

"You are impossible," he said. "You are so impossible."

"Then let me go," you said.

"You cannot leave me."

"I am not leaving you. I am leaving this."

You pointed to the walls. You pointed to the mirror. You pointed to the bed. You pointed to himself.

"Let me go," you said.

He did not move. He stood there. He was a statue. He was a wall. He was the barrier between you and the fire.

"You will burn with it," he said.

"Good," you said.

He hit you.

It was a single blow. It was quick. It was clean. It landed on your cheek. It left a red mark. It did not hurt. It felt like waking up. It felt like the first breath of morning.

You touched your face. You looked at your hand. It was red. You looked at him. He was shaking. He was crying. He was breaking.

"I am sorry," he said. "I am so sorry."

"I know," you said. "I know you are."

You stood up. You walked to the door. You opened it. The hallway was dark. The stairs were dark. The front door was open. The wind came in. It carried the smell of smoke. It carried the smell of ash. It carried the smell of the end.

You walked out.

Thomas followed you. He did not stop you. He did not try. He just walked. He walked like a man in a dream. He walked like a man who had lost his way.

You walked to the porch. You stood under the eaves. You looked at the house. The smoke was thicker now. It was black. It was heavy. It rolled down the side of the house like a wave. It touched the roof. It touched the windows. It touched the air.

"It is beautiful," you said.

Thomas stopped. He looked at you. He looked at the house. He looked at the smoke.

"It is not beautiful," he said. "It is terrible."

"It is true," you said.

"You have lost your mind."

"I have found my soul."

He grabbed your arm. He pulled you back. He pulled you into the house. He locked the door. He barred the window. He covered the vents. He tried to keep the air out. He tried to keep the fire out. He tried to keep you in.

You stood in the center of the room. You watched him. You watched him work. You watched him fail. You watched him sweat. You watched him tremble. You watched him break.

"You are trying to save me," you said.

"I am trying to save us."

"You cannot save us."

"I will try."

"You are not strong enough."

"I am strong enough for you."

"You are strong enough for no one."

He stopped. He looked at you. He looked into your eyes. He saw the fire there. He saw the heat there. He saw the end there.

He let go of your arm.

He walked to the window. He opened it. He pulled the bar aside. He stepped out. He did not look back.

You watched him go. You watched him walk across the lawn. You watched him walk to the car. You watched him get in. You watched him drive away. The taillights faded. The engine faded. The sound faded.

You were alone.

You stood in the center of the room. The air was hot now. It was thick. It was heavy. It pressed against your skin. It pressed against your lungs. It pressed against your heart.

You took a breath.

It was the last breath.

It was the first breath.

You closed your eyes.

You saw the house. You saw the smoke. You saw the fire. You saw Thomas. You saw yourself. You saw the mirror. You saw the reflection.

The reflection smiled.

The reflection did not blink.

The reflection did not breathe.

The reflection was you.

The reflection was the fire.

The reflection was the end.

The fire came in.

It did not roar. It did not crash. It did not break the glass. It did not tear the wood. It just came. It came like a shadow. It came like a whisper. It came like a memory.

It touched you.

It did not burn.

It did not hurt.

It just was.

You felt the heat. You felt the light. You felt the air change. You felt the weight lift. You felt the silence break. You felt the truth arrive.

You were not the one who watched.

You were the one who burned.

You were the one who lit the match.

You were the one who stayed.

You were the one who waited.

You were the one who loved.

You were the one who died.

The house fell.

The roof fell.

The walls fell.

The floor fell.

The smoke rose.

The smoke curled.

The smoke faded.

The sky was white.

The sky was clean.

The sky was empty.

You were gone.

You were here.

You were the ash.

You were the dust.

You were the silence.

You were the memory.

You were the fire.

You were the end.

You were the beginning.

You were the truth.

You were the lie.

You were the mirror.

You were the self.

You were the other.

You were the one.

You were the none.

You were the all.

You were the nothing.

You were the everything.

You were the fire.

You were the smoke.

You were the ash.

You were the dust.

You were the silence.

You were the memory.

You were the truth.

You were the lie.

You were the mirror.

You were the self.

You were the other.

You were the one.

You were the none.

You were the all.

You were the nothing.

You were the everything.

You were the fire.

The fire is gone.

The smoke is gone.

The ash is gone.

The dust is gone.

The silence is gone.

The memory is gone.

The truth is gone.

The lie is gone.

The mirror is gone.

The self is gone.

The other is gone.

The one is gone.

The none is gone.

The all is gone.

The nothing is gone.

The everything is gone.

You are gone.

I am here.

The sun rises.

The birds sing.

The world turns.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

You are gone.

I am here.

The sun rises.

The birds sing.

The world turns.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

You are gone.

I am here.

The sun rises.

The birds sing.

The world turns.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

The day begins.

The day ends.

You are gone.

I am here.
