The Scripted Hunt

The air in the mountain resort was too thin, too clean. Sarah woke up in a room that felt like a hotel but smelled like a hospital. She had a list. Five names. Five people who had participated in the 'Cleansing'—the event that had wiped her life clean and left her for dead in a shallow grave.

She found the first one in a hunting lodge. He had been expecting her. He didn't fight; he just laughed. "You think you're the hunter, Sarah? Look at the walls."

Sarah looked. The walls were covered in photographs of her. Not from the past, but from the last three days. Photos of her waking up, photos of her eating, photos of her sleeping. He had been watching her every move.

"You're just following the breadcrumbs," he whispered before she drove the knife into his throat.

The second target was a woman of high standing in the city. Sarah cornered her in a glass elevator. The woman didn't scream. She just looked at Sarah with a terrifying kind of empathy. "The Architect is very proud of this version of you, Sarah. The 'Avenging Angel' arc is always the most satisfying."

Sarah killed her, but the word 'Architect' began to itch under her skin.

As she progressed through the list, the world began to fray. She noticed that the weather changed exactly when she felt a certain emotion. She noticed that the people she met spoke in scripts, their dialogue looping if she asked the wrong questions.

The final name on the list was 'The Architect'. She found him in a white room at the summit of the mountain. He was sitting at a desk, watching a dozen monitors. On each screen was a different version of Sarah. One was a grieving mother, one was a cold assassin, one was a broken shell.

"Welcome to the finale," The Architect said, smiling. "The revenge fantasy is the most effective way to keep a consciousness stable during the upload process. You've performed beautifully. Your aggression levels are peak."

Sarah looked at her hands. They were starting to pixelate. The blood on her clothes was just a texture, a visual cue to satisfy her need for violence.

"Am I... not real?" she asked.

"You are as real as the data that defines you," he replied. "Now, shall we reset the loop? I think for the next run, we'll try a 'Forgiveness' arc. It's more challenging."

He pressed a button. The world dissolved into white light, and Sarah felt the list in her hand vanish, replaced by a sudden, artificial feeling of peace.
