The Pale Shadows
The ink is wet. It always is.
You press your thumb against the paper. The dark stain spreads under your nail, a soft, cold bloom. It does not dry. It never dries.
You are in the room. The room is small. The walls are the color of old bone. There is no door that opens. There is only the desk. And the pen. And the name.
Your name is not yours anymore.
You sit. You breathe. The air is thick. It tastes of copper and dust.
"Look," says the voice.
It is not a voice. It is a sound. It comes from the corner. From the shadows.
"Look at what you have done."
You do not look. You look at the paper. The name is written in a hand you know. It is your hand. But it is wrong. The letters are sharp. They cut.
"I did not write this," you say.
Your voice is thin. It cracks.
"Yes, you did," the shadow says. "You have always been writing this."
You pick up the pen. The ink is cold. It runs down the barrel. It feels like blood.
"I don't understand," you say.
"Understand nothing," the shadow says. "Just write."
You write. You write the date. You write the time. You write the address. The address is yours. The house on the hill. The house with the white picket fence. The house where you used to play.
The shadow moves. It is tall. It is thin. It has no face. Only a mouth. A wide, white mouth.
"Is it fair?" the shadow asks.
"I don't know," you say. "What is fair?"
"Justice," the shadow says. "Is it justice?"
You think of the man in the chair. The man in the courtroom. The man who smiled. The man who said he was sorry. The man who went free.
"No," you say. "It is not justice."
The shadow laughs. It is a dry sound. Like leaves skittering on stone.
"Then why do you write?"
"Because I must."
"You must?"
"Yes."
The shadow leans forward. The light in the room flickers. The ink on the paper pulses.
"Who are you?" you ask.
"I am the record," the shadow says. "I am the memory. I am the truth that they buried."
You look at the name on the paper. It is your name. But it is also his name. The name of the man who hurt you. The name of the man who was let go.
The names are the same.
You feel a chill. It starts in your chest. It spreads to your limbs. You are cold. You are always cold in this room.
"Give me the pen," the shadow says.
"No."
"Give it to me."
"I won't."
The shadow steps closer. The floorboards creak. There are no floorboards. There is only the dark.
"Let go," the shadow whispers.
"I can't."
"Let go. It is time."
You grip the pen. Your knuckles are white. Your fingers shake. The ink drips onto your hand. It burns.
"I am not finished," you say.
"You are finished. You have been finished for years."
You look at the paper. The words are changing. They are moving. They are swimming. The name of the man is dissolving. It is becoming your name.
You try to pull back. Your hand slips. The pen falls.
It lands on the paper. It writes itself.
You watch. You cannot stop it.
The pen writes: *Guilty.*
The shadow smiles. The white mouth stretches wider.
"See?" the shadow says. "It was always true."
You feel a tear slide down your cheek. It is hot. It is salt.
"I wanted him to be free," you say.
"He was never free," the shadow says. "He was never anything. He was only the shadow you cast."
You look at the paper. The word *Guilty* is bold. It is black. It is absolute.
You realize the truth. It hits you. It is heavy. It is crushing.
You are not the victim. You are not the witness. You are the judge.
You have been the judge all along.
You have been keeping him in this room. You have been writing his sentence over and over. You have been refusing to let him go. You have been refusing to let yourself go.
The injustice was not that he was free. The injustice was that you kept him bound.
You kept him bound by your pain. You kept him bound by your anger. You kept him bound by your refusal to forgive.
The shadow fades. The room lights up. The walls are no longer bone-colored. They are white. Clean. Bright.
The desk is empty. The pen is gone. The paper is gone.
You are alone.
You are sitting in a chair. It is a comfortable chair. It is in a room. The room is your room. The room in your house. The house on the hill.
You look at your hands. They are clean. There is no ink. There is no blood.
You feel a lightness. It is strange. It is frightening. It is wonderful.
You stand up. Your legs are steady. You walk to the window. You open it.
The air is fresh. It smells of rain. It smells of earth.
You close your eyes. You breathe.
You let go.
You let go of the name. You let go of the guilt. You let go of the shadow.
It is not justice. It is not revenge. It is not punishment.
It is release.
It is the only thing that matters.
You open your eyes. The world is outside. It is waiting. It is patient. It is kind.
You step out onto the porch. The grass is wet. The sky is grey. The sun is trying to break through.
You take a breath. It is deep. It is full.
You are free.
You have always been free.
You just forgot.
The ink was a lie. The shadow was a lie. The room was a lie.
Only you were real.
And you are enough.
You walk down the path. The path leads away from the house. It leads into the woods. The trees are tall. The branches are bare.
You do not look back.
You do not need to.
The past is behind you. It is gone. It is dust.
You walk forward. You walk into the light.
The light is pale. It is soft. It is warm.
It is the light of morning.
It is the light of life.
You are alive.
You are here.
You are now.
And that is all.
And that is everything.
The story ends. The page turns. The silence follows.
But you know. You know what it means.
You know that the pen is not the writer. The writer is the pen.
You know that the shadow is not the body. The body is the shadow.
You know that the justice is not the law. The law is the justice.
You know that the truth is not the fact. The fact is the truth.
You know that the pain is not the wound. The wound is the pain.
You know that the love is not the person. The person is the love.
You know that the life is not the time. The time is the life.
You know.
You have always known.
You just had to remember.
And now you do.
The sun rises. The birds sing. The wind blows.
The world turns.
And you turn with it.
You are part of it.
You are in it.
You are of it.
And it is of you.
The cycle continues.
The ink dries.
The shadow lifts.
The name fades.
The silence holds.
The peace remains.
The truth stays.
The light stays.
The love stays.
You stay.
You are here.
You are safe.
You are home.
The end.
