The Distant Temple

The bell tolls. It is a dull, wet sound. Like a stone dropped into a deep well. You are in the workshop. The air smells of oak shavings and old varnish. You are a joiner. You make chairs. You make tables. You make the boxes that hold the secrets of the wealthy. Your hands are steady. They are strong. They have never once faltered. Not since the day you left the city.

Outside, the rain falls. It beats against the small, high window. The glass is thin. It is cracked in the corner. A cold draft slips in. It touches your neck. You do not move. You are waiting. You are always waiting.

The door opens. It creaks. The sound is sharp. It cuts through the silence. You do not look up. You know the step. It is heavy. It is slow. It is the step of a man who carries the weight of the law in his bones.

"Is he in?" The voice is rough. It is dry. Like dead leaves scraping on pavement.

You nod. Your eyes remain on the wood in your hands. It is a piece of ash. It is pale. It is smooth. You run your thumb over the grain. It is perfect.

"Send him in."

The stranger enters. He is tall. He wears a coat of dark wool. It is damp. The water drips from the hem. It pools on the floorboards. You watch the puddle form. It spreads. It darkens the wood. He does not apologize. He does not wipe his feet. He stands in the center of the room. He looks at you. He looks at the wood. He looks at the door behind him.

You stand. You are shorter than him. You are smaller. You have the look of a man who has spent his life bending over a workbench. Your back is slightly curved. Your shoulders are hunched. You do not feel small. You feel solid. You are the table. You are the foundation.

"Sit," you say.

Your voice is low. It is quiet. It carries no anger. It carries no fear. It carries only the weight of the years.

He does not sit. He leans against the wall. His arms are crossed. His face is pale. His eyes are bright. They are feverish. He has not slept. He has not eaten. He is hollowed out. He is a shell.

"You are the maker," he says.

"I am the joiner," you correct him.

The distinction is important. A maker creates from nothing. A joiner binds what is already there. You bind the pieces. You hold them together. You make them last.

"Where is it?" he asks.

You do not answer. You pick up a chisel. You hold it in your hand. The handle is worn. It is smooth from your grip. It is an extension of your arm. You turn it over. You look at the edge. It is sharp. It is cold.

"Where is the evidence?" he presses.

"I do not know what you speak of."

"You do."

He steps closer. The puddle from his coat has grown. It reaches his boots. He looks down. He sees the wet ring around his feet. He looks at you. There is a flicker in his eyes. It is confusion. It is doubt. He is looking for a monster. He is looking for a villain. He is looking for a man who has betrayed his trust. He is looking for a man who has broken the law.

He is not looking for a man who has kept his word.

You set the chisel down. You lean back. You breathe. The air in the room is stale. It is thick with the scent of dust and wood. You look at him. You see the fear in him. You see the anger. You see the exhaustion. You see the man who has given everything to the system. You see the man who believes the system is just.

He is wrong.

The system is not just. The system is a machine. It is cold. It is efficient. It grinds up the small and feeds the large. It spits out the broken. It keeps the whole. It does not care for the heart. It cares for the form. It cares for the law.

And you have broken the law.

You took the boy. You took him from the prison. You took him because the prison was a place of rot. Because the guards were cruel. Because the boy was innocent. Because the law said he was guilty. And the law was wrong.

You took him to the forest. You hid him. You fed him. You healed his wounds. You taught him to read. You taught him to pray. You taught him to survive.

And then you sent him away.

You sent him back to the world. You sent him back to the people who would judge him. You sent him back to the people who would punish him. You sent him back to the law.

Why?

Because the law is stronger than you. Because the law is the air we breathe. Because to fight it is to die. Because to break it is to break yourself.

You did not betray him. You saved him. You saved him from yourself. You saved him from the burden of your guilt. You saved him from the weight of your love.

You loved him. Not as a father. Not as a brother. You loved him as a man loves a thing he cannot have. You loved him as a man loves a ghost. It was a love that consumed. It was a love that ate. It left you empty. It left you hollow.

You let him go. You let him go so that you could stay. You let him go so that he could live. You let him go so that you could die.

The stranger steps forward. He is shaking. His hands are trembling. He is afraid of you. He is afraid of what you have done. He is afraid of what you have become.

"Where is the boy?" he asks.

His voice is a whisper. It is a plea. It is a command.

You look at him. You see the truth in his eyes. He knows. He has always known. He knows you are not a criminal. He knows you are a martyr. He knows you have sacrificed everything for the sake of one life. And he knows that the system will crush you for it.

He knows that you are the only one who is right.

And he knows that he is the only one who can stop it.

He does not stop it.

He draws his pistol. The sound is loud. It is final. It is the sound of the end.

You do not flinch. You do not move. You look at the gun. You look at his hand. You look at his face.

You see the regret. You see the pain. You see the love.

He fires.

The bullet hits you in the chest. It is hot. It is bright. It is a flash of white light. It is a moment of absolute clarity.

You fall. You hit the floor. The wood shavings scatter. They rise into the air. They drift down like snow. They cover you. They bury you.

The stranger stands over you. He is breathing hard. His chest heaves. He looks at you. He sees the blood. It is dark. It is rich. It is spreading.

He drops the gun. It clatters on the floor. The sound is harsh. It is ugly.

He kneels. He reaches for you. His hands hover over you. He does not touch you. He is afraid. He is afraid of the blood. He is afraid of the death. He is afraid of the truth.

You look up at him. Your eyes are dim. Your voice is faint.

"Let him go," you say.

The words are barely a breath. They are a whisper. They are a ghost.

He nods. He tears at his shirt. He presses it to your chest. The blood soaks through. It is warm. It is wet. It is life leaving you.

"You are a good man," he says.

His voice is broken. It is raw. It is full of tears.

You smile. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is the smile of a man who has finally found peace.

"No," you say.

"Then what are you?"

"I am the wood," you say.

The words hang in the air. They are simple. They are true.

You are the wood. You are the grain. You are the strength. You are the foundation. You are the thing that holds the weight. You are the thing that breaks so that others may stand.

The stranger weeps. He holds your hand. His hand is cold. Your hand is warm. The warmth is fading. The light is fading.

Outside, the rain continues. It beats against the window. It is relentless. It is endless.

You close your eyes. The dark comes. It is soft. It is quiet. It is like a deep sleep. It is like a long rest.

You think of the boy. You think of his face. You think of his laugh. You think of his eyes. They are bright. They are clear. They are free.

He is free.

You are not.

You are bound. You are bound by the wood. You are bound by the law. You are bound by the love.

And the binding is tight.

The stranger stays. He sits by your body. He does not move. He does not speak. He watches the blood pool. He watches the life leave. He watches the end.

He is the witness. He is the judge. He is the executioner.

He is the system.

And the system is just.

The room is quiet. The rain is quiet. The wood is quiet.

You are gone.

The wood remains.

The grain holds.

The form endures.

The stranger stands. He wipes his face. He picks up the gun. He puts it away. He opens the door. The cold air rushes in. It fills the room. It fills the silence.

He steps out. He closes the door. The lock clicks. The sound is final.

The workshop is empty. The table is bare. The chisel lies on the floor. The wood shavings are still. The blood is drying.

It is a scene of order. It is a scene of balance.

It is a scene of justice.

The rain stops. The sun comes out. The light shines through the broken window. It illuminates the dust. It illuminates the blood. It illuminates the wood.

The wood is pale. The wood is smooth. The wood is strong.

The wood is gone.
