The Wistful Witness

The hammer falls. You feel the vibration in your teeth.

It is a small shop. It smells of sawdust and old varnish. Outside, the wind howls against the shutters. You are working on a chair. No, not a chair. It is a cage.

You have been building it for three days. Your hands are steady. They are always steady. They never shake, even when the wood splinters under the chisel. You are a master of your craft. The village knows this. They bring you broken tables and warped doors. They watch you work. They do not speak much. They just watch.

They watch because they know what you are doing.

"You are strong," a voice says.

You do not turn around. You keep hammering. The nail goes in with a dull thud.

"Strong?" you ask.

"Stronger than the rest of us."

The voice is old. It is dry, like leaves in autumn. It comes from the corner of the room. It is Master Elias. He is sitting in a high-backed chair. He has been sitting there for hours. He does not move. He does not blink. He is just a shadow in the dim light.

"I am only a carpenter," you say.

"You are a vessel," Elias says.

You stop hammering. You look at the cage. It is made of oak. It is tight and dark. The bars are thin. They are close together. There is no room to breathe inside. There is no room to turn around.

"Why are you here?" you ask.

"To watch," Elias says. "And to help."

You feel a cold spot in your chest. You have felt it for weeks. It sits right under your ribs. It is heavy. It pulls at you. You try to ignore it. You try to focus on the wood. But the weight is there. It is growing.

"What do you mean, help?" you ask.

"I mean," Elias says, "that you must finish it. Before the moon is full."

You look out the window. The sky is black. There are no stars. The wind is picking up. It rattles the glass.

"I don't want to finish it," you say. Your voice is quiet. "I don't want to build this."

Elias does not answer. He just watches you. His eyes are milky. They are blind. But he sees you. He sees everything.

You go back to work. You pick up the mallet. You swing it. The sound is sharp. It cuts through the silence.

The village is quiet. The houses are dark. The streets are empty. Everyone is inside. Everyone is waiting. They know what is coming. They have always known. It is part of the legend. It is part of the story.

Every generation, someone is chosen. Every generation, someone must build the cage. And every generation, someone must go inside.

You are not afraid. You are sure of that. Fear is for children. Fear is for those who do not know their duty. You know your duty. You have known it since you were young. You have known it since you first picked up a chisel. You have known it since you felt the first tremor in your hands.

It started small. A flicker. A twitch. You thought it was fatigue. You thought it was the cold. But it grew. It spread to your fingers. It spread to your wrists. It spread to your shoulders. It was like a vine. It wrapped around you. It tightened.

You tried to cut it away. You tried to fight it. You smashed your own hands against the workbench. You screamed. But the vine did not break. It only tightened.

Then you met Elias. He found you in the forest. You were hiding. You were shaking. You were crying. He walked up to you. He did not speak. He just put his hand on your shoulder.

"Let it go," he said.

You tried to shake him off. He did not let go. His hand was cold. It was like stone.

"You cannot fight it," he said. "It is not your enemy. It is your burden. And burdens must be carried."

You looked at him. You looked into his blind eyes. You saw something there. You saw sadness. You saw pity. But you also saw something else. You saw acceptance.

You let go. You let the vine tighten. You let it pull you. You let it guide your hands.

Now you are here. The cage is almost done. You have only one bar left. One final piece of oak. It is in your hand. It is smooth. It is perfect.

"Are you ready?" Elias asks.

You do not answer. You cannot answer. Your mouth is dry. Your throat is tight.

The moon is rising. You can see it through the window. It is white. It is full. It is watching you.

You pick up the mallet. You align the bar. You strike.

The sound is loud. It echoes in the small shop. It echoes in your head. It echoes in your bones.

The cage is complete.

You step back. You look at it. It is beautiful. It is terrible. It is perfect.

Elias stands up. He moves slowly. He walks toward the cage. He opens the door.

"Go in," he says.

You look at him. "Why?"

"Because it is time," he says.

"I don't want to," you say.

"None of us ever do," he says. "But we all do."

You look at the cage. You look at the dark space inside. You know what is there. You know what is waiting. It is not a monster. It is not a demon. It is a presence. It is a force. It is the thing that lives in the walls. It is the thing that lives in the wind. It is the thing that has always been here.

You step forward. Your feet are heavy. They feel like they are made of lead. You step into the cage.

It is cold. It is dark. The bars close over you. You hear the click of the lock. It is a small sound. It is final.

Elias steps back. He closes the door. He turns the key.

"Rest," he says.

You close your eyes. You feel the weight. It is no longer under your ribs. It is everywhere. It is in the air. It is in the wood. It is in the silence.

You are not alone. You are with the village. You are with the wind. You are with the moon. You are with the past. You are with the future. You are with everything that has ever been and everything that will ever be.

You are not afraid. You are part of it. You are the witness. You are the stone in the river. You are the root in the earth.

You breathe. The air is thin. The air is sweet.

Outside, the wind stops. The night is still. The village sleeps. They dream of you. They feel your presence. They know you are there. They know you are safe.

You are safe. You are free. You are bound.

The story is over. The story has just begun.

You sit in the dark. You wait. You do not know how long you will wait. You do not know if you will ever come out. It does not matter. You have your duty. You have your peace. You have your purpose.

You are the carpenter. You are the cage. You are the key.

You close your eyes. You smile.

The moon shines down. The night is deep. The world turns. You are still.

You are home.

The wood creaks. It is a soft sound. It is a gentle sound. It is the sound of life. It is the sound of death. It is the sound of truth.

You listen. You do not judge. You do not react. You simply are.

Elias sits by the fire. He watches the flames. They dance. They flicker. They burn.

He thinks of you. He thinks of the others. He thinks of the long line of men who came before you. They were strong. They were brave. They were broken.

They are all in the cage now. They are all part of the wood. They are all part of the story.

He picks up a piece of paper. He picks up a pen. He writes.

He writes your name. He writes the date. He writes the weather.

He writes the truth.

The truth is simple. The truth is hard. The truth is necessary.

He finishes. He folds the paper. He puts it in a drawer. He locks the drawer.

He stands up. He walks to the door. He opens it.

The night is cold. The air is fresh.

He steps outside. He looks at the shop. The lights are off. The windows are dark.

He locks the door. He walks away.

He does not look back.

He knows you are there. He knows you are safe. He knows you are watching.

He walks into the dark. He walks into the silence. He walks into the night.

The story ends. The story continues.
