The Faded Ruin

The oak stands at the center of the square. It is ancient. Its roots grip the stone like fingers digging into flesh. You look at it. You have looked at it every day for ten years. It is the only thing that has not changed. The walls have cracked. The paint has peeled. The faces of the guards have aged. The oak remains. It is green. It is tall. It is still.

You are a guard. You wear the grey uniform. It fits too well now. It is your second skin. You stand by the gate. The gate is iron. It is cold. You hold the spear. The spear is wood. It is smooth. You have polished it until it shines. You are good at your job. You are very good.

The King sits in the Hall of Glass. He is far away. You cannot see his face. You can only hear his voice. It comes through the air. It is thin. It is sharp. He speaks of order. He speaks of peace. He speaks of the tree.

They call it the Heartwood.

It is not a heart. It is wood. But they say it beats. They say it pumps the life of the city into the veins of the stone. If it dies, the city dies. This is the lie. This is the law. You believe it. You must believe it. To doubt is to rot. To rot is to die.

A woman walks past you. She is old. Her hair is white. She looks at you. Her eyes are tired. She sees your uniform. She sees your face. She does not speak. She knows what you are. She knows what you do. She looks at the oak. She touches her chest. She moves on.

You watch her go. You feel a pull. A small pull. Like a hook in your throat. You know her. You do not know her name. You have seen her for years. She sells apples. She sits under the tree. She eats slowly. She watches the leaves. She is calm. You are not calm. You are rigid. You are a statue. You are a tool.

The wind blows. The leaves rustle. It sounds like whispers. It sounds like warnings.

The King sends a message. It comes on paper. It is black ink. It is crisp.

The Heartwood is sick. The leaves are yellowing. The city fears. The guards must act. You must cut the branches. You must clear the rot. You must save the heart.

You look at the oak. The leaves are green. They are vibrant. They are alive. But you see the shadow. You see the dark spot near the base. It looks like decay. It looks like death. You believe the message. You take the axe.

The axe is heavy. It is iron. It is sharp. You swing it. You hit the branch. Wood shatters. It falls to the ground. It is dead. You swing again. You swing again. You cut the yellow leaves. You cut the dead wood. You work for hours. Your arms burn. Your back aches. You are tired.

The woman is there. She is watching. She does not run. She does not scream. She watches you. Her eyes are sad. She shakes her head.

You stop. You look at her.

"Is it dead?" you ask.

She does not answer. She looks at the stump. She looks at the axe. She looks at you.

"It is just wood," she says.

Her voice is quiet. It is soft. It is real.

You feel a shock. It goes through your body. It is cold. You look at the oak. You look at the cut. The sap is flowing. It is red. It is bright. It is blood.

The tree is not sick. The tree is bleeding.

You look at the King’s message. It is still in your hand. The ink is dry. The words are static. They are dead. The tree is alive.

You drop the axe. It clangs on the stone. The sound is loud. It echoes in the square. People look. They whisper. They point. They fear. They do not understand. They see the blood. They see the wound. They see the danger.

The guards come. They run. They have spears. They have shields. They wear grey. They look like you. They look at the blood. They look at you.

One of them steps forward. He is tall. He is strong. He is your friend. He is Thomas.

"Step aside," Thomas says.

His voice is hard. It is flat. It is the voice of the system.

You do not move. You stand by the oak. You are small. You are human. You are afraid.

"Protect the Heart," Thomas says.

"It is not a heart," you say.

"It is the law," Thomas says.

You look at Thomas. You see his eyes. They are empty. He has forgotten how to see. He has forgotten how to feel. He is a wall. You are a gate.

You push him. He stumbles. You push him again. He falls. He gets up. He raises his spear.

You raise your hand. You do not have a weapon. You have your hands. You have your body. You have your truth.

Thomas lunges. He is fast. He is strong. You are slow. You are weak. But you are sure.

He hits you. It hurts. It burns. You fall. You get up. You stand.

He hits you again. You fall. You get up. You stand.

The crowd watches. They do not help. They are afraid. They are part of the wall. They want the order. They want the peace. They want the lie.

Thomas comes again. He is angry. He is desperate. He swings the spear. It misses. You are close. You are very close.

You look at the oak. The sap is drying. It is turning brown. It is healing. It is strong.

You look at Thomas. You see his face. It is twisted. It is pain. It is fear. He is trapped. He is a slave to the grey. He is a slave to the King.

You could kill him. You have the chance. You have the strength. You have the rage.

You do not kill him.

You drop to your knees. You hold your hands out. You surrender.

Thomas stops. He is confused. He is angry. He is disappointed. He wanted a fight. He wanted a monster. He did not want a man.

He lowers the spear. He steps back. He looks at you with disgust.

"Drag him away," he says.

The other guards move. They grab you. They pull you. You struggle. You kick. You scream. They silence you. They cover your mouth. They drag you away from the oak.

You look back. The oak is alone. It is wounded. It is bleeding. But it is standing.

They take you to the cells. The cells are dark. The walls are stone. The air is cold. The air is stale.

You sit on the floor. You are bruised. You are broken. You are free.

You think of the woman. You think of the apples. You think of the leaves.

The King will punish you. The King will kill you. The system will crush you. It will crush your body. It will crush your bones. It will crush your name.

But the oak will remain.

It will grow. It will heal. It will stand.

It will outlive the King. It will outlive the guards. It will outlive the law.

It will outlive you.

And that is enough.

You close your eyes. You breathe. The air is thick. The air is heavy. But it is yours.

You are no longer a tool. You are no longer a wall. You are a man. You are a leaf. You are part of the wind.

The door opens. Light floods in. It is bright. It is blinding.

Thomas stands there. He has a sword. It is silver. It is sharp.

"Prepare yourself," he says.

His voice is soft. It is sad.

You stand up. You walk to him. You do not run. You do not beg. You look him in the eye.

You see the crack in his armor. You see the fear in his soul. You see the man behind the mask.

You forgive him.

You forgive the King.

You forgive the system.

You forgive the lie.

You are free.

The sword falls. It is quick. It is silent. It is done.

You fall. The floor is cold. The light is fading. The dark is coming.

But the oak is still green. The oak is still standing. The oak is still breathing.

It is the only thing that matters.

It is the only truth.

It is the only freedom.

You die. You are gone. You are dust. You are memory.

But the tree lives. The tree lives. The tree lives.

The wind blows. The leaves rustle. The city sleeps. The King dreams. The guards stand.

The oak stands.

It stands in the center of the square. It is ancient. It is eternal. It is free.
