The Faded Root

You are bleeding. The blood is thick. It tastes of iron and old dirt. You press your hand against the wound in your side. The fabric is already soaked. You do not look at it. You look at the man in front of you. He is a Warden. His face is a mask of bureaucratic indifference. He holds a ledger. He holds a sword.

The air in the square is cold. It smells of wet stone and fear. The village is gone. Not destroyed. Just absent. The houses are there. The doors are open. The tables are set. But the people are not. They are behind you. They are in the cellar. They are silent.

You are the Sheriff. You have been the Sheriff for ten years. You know the names of the rats. You know the depth of the well. You know the way the light hits the market square at noon. You know the weight of the law. The law is a machine. It has gears. It has oil. It does not have a heart.

The Warden steps forward. His boots scrape on the cobblestones.

"Article Four," he says. His voice is flat. It is the voice of a printer. "Non-compliance with the Census of Souls."

You do not answer. You know the answer. The Census requires a headcount. Every living thing must be counted. Every breath must be logged. The village has a surplus. Three extra souls. The machine cannot process the surplus. The machine demands correction.

Correction means death. Or removal.

You raise your hand. The Warden raises his sword.

"Stand down," you say.

"Comply," he says.

You lunge. The steel sings. It is a high note. A clean note. You know this sword. You sharpened it last month. You know the Warden’s guard. He is slow on the left. He is fast on the right. You are not fast. You are heavy. You are tired.

He cuts your arm. The pain is white. It is bright. You feel it before you see the blood. You feel the heat of it. You feel the loss of it.

You do not stop. You are a soldier. You are an officer. You are a man who has made a vow. The vow is not to God. The vow is to the Self. The Self is the only thing that is real. The Self is the anchor. The Self is the obsession.

You grab his wrist. You twist. The sword falls. It clatters on the stones. The sound is sharp. It is final.

You kick him in the knee. He falls. You stand over him. You are breathing hard. The air burns in your lungs.

"Where are they?" you ask.

The Warden looks up. He is smiling. It is a small smile. It is the smile of a clerk who has found an error in the books.

"They are not here," he says. "They are in the file. They are in the record. They are accounted for."

You look around the square. The shadows are long. The shadows are deep. You see a shape in the corner. A woman. She is holding a basket. She is looking at you. Her eyes are wide. Her eyes are full of a terrible, quiet love.

You know her. She is Margaret. She is the baker’s wife. She has a daughter. The daughter is one of the surplus.

You turn to the Warden. "Bring me the file."

The Warden does not move. He is bleeding from the mouth. A thin red line. It is beautiful. It is wrong.

"Protocol," he says. "The file is sealed. The file is sacred. The file is the state."

You pick up the sword. It is heavy. It is cold. You hold it with both hands. You do not want to kill him. You want to open the door. The door is in his mind. The door is in the law.

"I am the Sheriff," you say. "I have authority."

"You have a badge," he says. "The badge is paper. The law is stone."

You strike him. The blow is heavy. It is decisive. His head turns. His body shakes. He falls into the gutter. He does not get up.

You walk to the cellar. The door is iron. It is locked. You do not have the key. The key is in the tower. The tower is high. The tower is watched.

You climb. The stones are slick. The wind is howling. You are alone. You have been alone for a long time. The loneliness is a weight. It is a stone in your chest. It is a stone in your gut.

You reach the top. The door is open. The room is small. There is a desk. There is a chair. There is a light. The light is yellow. The light is sick.

On the desk is the ledger. It is a large book. It is bound in black leather. You open it. The pages are thin. The pages are white. The pages are full of names.

You look for the name. Margaret. The name is there. But it is crossed out. A red line through it. A red line through her daughter. A red line through the boy who plays the fiddle.

They are marked. They are dead on paper. They are alive in the cellar.

You look at the page again. There is a note. It is in a different hand. The hand is shaking. The hand is small.

"I saw you," it says. "I saw you climb. I am watching. I am the witness. I am the truth."

You look out the window. The square is empty. The Warden is still in the gutter. The people are still in the cellar. You are still here.

You close the book. You hold it in your hands. It is warm. It is heavy. It is a weapon.

You go back down. You go to the square. You stand in the center. You hold the book high. The wind takes the pages. The pages fly. They are white birds. They are white ghosts.

The people come out. They come from the cellar. They come from the alleys. They come from the fields. They are pale. They are thin. They are afraid.

They look at you. They look at the book. They look at the Warden.

The Warden is standing up. He is wiping the blood from his mouth. He is straightening his coat. He is adjusting his hat.

"Chaos," he says. "Disorder. The system is breached."

You throw the book at him. It hits him in the face. He falls. He does not get up.

You pick up a stone. It is large. It is round. It is smooth. You hold it in your hand. You feel the texture. You feel the cold.

You look at Margaret. She is looking at you. She is not afraid. She is looking at you with a look that you do not understand. It is a look of recognition. It is a look of surrender.

You raise the stone. You throw it. It hits the Warden. He does not move. He does not breathe.

The square is silent. The wind is silent. The birds are silent.

You stand there. You are breathing. You are alive. You are the Sheriff. You are the man who broke the law. You are the man who saved the village.

You look at your hands. They are shaking. They are red. They are stained with blood. They are stained with truth.

You walk to the cellar. You open the door. The people are there. They are sitting on the floor. They are eating. They are drinking. They are alive.

You sit down. You are tired. You are empty. You are full.

Margaret sits next to you. She does not speak. She touches your hand. Her hand is warm. Her hand is soft.

You close your eyes. You hear the wind. You hear the stones. You hear the silence.

The law is gone. The machine is broken. The gear is stopped. The oil is dry.

You are free. You are trapped. You are the master. You are the servant.

You open your eyes. The light is fading. The night is coming. The night is dark. The night is deep.

You know what comes next. The other Wardens. The other machines. The other laws. They will come. They will be many. They will be strong.

You will be alone. You will be one.

You will stand. You will fight. You will die.

It is enough. It is all.

You stand up. You pick up the sword. The sword is cold. The sword is sharp.

You walk to the gate. You walk to the road. You walk to the horizon.

The village is behind you. The village is quiet. The village is safe.

You are ahead of you. You are the path. You are the end.

You are the faded root. You are the deep soil. You are the hidden strength.

You do not look back. You do not look down. You look forward.

The road is long. The road is hard. The road is yours.

You walk. You walk. You walk.

The sun sets. The moon rises. The stars come out. The stars are bright. The stars are cold. The stars are watching.

You are small. You are big. You are nothing. You are everything.

You are the story. You are the end. You are the beginning.

You stop. You turn. You look at the village. The lights are on. The windows are warm. The doors are closed.

You are outside. You are inside.

You are the Warden. You are the Sheriff. You are the Ghost.

You laugh. It is a dry laugh. It is a bitter laugh. It is a true laugh.

You walk on. The night is deep. The night is endless. The night is yours.
