The champagne tasted like victory, which is to say it tasted like nothing at all.

I was thirty-two and I owned half the Atlantic fishing fleet. Arthur Winslow—my father—had built the empire from nothing, starting with a single trawler and a conviction that the ocean belonged to anyone brave enough to take from it. He was right, of course. The ocean belongs to no one, which means it belongs to everyone with a engine and a net.

Mother died when I was nineteen, in a storm off Newfoundland. The kind of storm that doesn't announce itself. One moment the sky was clear, the next it was black and the sea was a mountain and the boat was a toy. She went down with the boat, and something inside me went down with her.

I stopped coming home after that. I threw myself into the business, and the business threw itself into me, and for ten years I didn't think about the ocean once.

Then Seth Murphy found me.

He was a retired fisherman, the kind of old salt you see sitting on benches in port towns, telling stories that nobody believes. He showed up at my house on Long Island one Tuesday, rain pouring, hat in hand, looking like a man who had walked across the Atlantic to get there.

"Mr. Winslow," he said. "I need to tell you something."

I was busy—always busy—but something in his voice made me invite him in. He sat in my study, water dripping from his coat onto the Persian rug, and told me a story that would have been ridiculous if I hadn't been drunk.

"I can hear them," he said. "The fish. They cry out, Mr. Winslow. Every night, when the trawlers are pulling their nets, I can hear them crying."

I laughed. I'm not proud of it, but I laughed.

"Mr. Winslow, I'm not joking." His eyes were dark and intense, the eyes of a man who had spent his life staring at water that wanted to kill him. "My mother was a fisherwoman. She taught me to listen to the sea. And the sea is full of voices. The salmon scream. The cod whisper. The herring—weep."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because your father's boats—the ones you still run—they're killing everything. And the ocean is running out of voices."

He left before I could answer. I stood in my study, staring at the rain lashing the windows, and for the first time in years, I thought about Mother.

She used to sit on the deck of our boat, her hands wrapped around a cup of tea, and listen to the sea. "Can you hear it, Arthur?" she'd say. "The sea is talking to us."

I never could hear anything. I always assumed it was just the wind.

But Seth's words stayed with me. They followed me to board meetings and cocktail parties and sleepless nights in hotel rooms from Boston to Miami. They followed me to a party at the yacht club in East Hampton, where I met Edward Hartford.

Hartford was everything my father had never been: polished, ambitious, ruthless. His company was the new generation of fishing—bigger boats, bigger nets, bigger profits. He was trying to buy out my father's remaining interests, and he was using me as leverage.

"Your father's a sentimentalist," Hartford told me over champagne. "He thinks the ocean has feelings. Can you imagine? The ocean doesn't care about us, Arthur. It never has. It's ours. We just haven't finished taking it yet."

His words should have angered me. Instead, they terrified me.

Because I knew he was right.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I drove out to the harbor, where my father's last remaining boat—the one Mother sailed—was docked. I went aboard, alone, in the dead of night, and sat in the cabin where Mother used to keep her journals.

And I listened.

At first, nothing. Just the sound of water against the hull, the creak of wood, the distant hum of the highway. But then, slowly, I began to hear something else. A sound beneath the sound of the water. A low, mournful tone, like a cello played in an empty room.

It wasn't the fish. I know that now. It was the wind, passing through the rigging, making the boat sing. It was Mother's voice, carried on the wind, echoing in the empty cabin.

But in that moment, I couldn't tell the difference.

I sat on that boat for hours, listening to the sea, and I thought about everything my father had taken from it. Everything I had taken from it. The salmon runs that had collapsed. The cod stocks that had vanished. The herring that had been fished to extinction in waters where they'd swam for a thousand years.

We had taken everything. And the ocean had given us everything.

And for what?

Champagne that tasted like nothing. Board meetings that meant nothing. A life that felt like nothing.

I went back to Hartford the next day and told him no. I told him I wasn't selling. I told him his company was destroying the Atlantic, and one day there would be nothing left but empty water and dead men's dreams.

He laughed. Then he stopped laughing.

"You don't understand the business, Arthur," he said. "Nobody understands the business. The business understands us."

I left his office and drove home through the rain, and for the first time in my life, I didn't feel afraid. I felt something worse. I felt clear.

I started writing. I wrote everything down—everything my father had done, everything I had done, the names of the ports where the fish had vanished, the years when the runs had collapsed, the stories old fishermen had told me about a time when the ocean was so full of life that you could walk on water.

I published it six months later. A small book, called "The Empty Sea." It sold three thousand copies. Nobody cared.

But I didn't care either.

Because I had finally heard what Mother was trying to tell me. The sea wasn't crying. It was singing. And the song was beautiful, and it was terrible, and it was the only thing in the world that mattered.

I still live on Long Island. I still drink champagne. But I don't taste anything anymore. And that's all right.

Because sometimes, late at night, when the house is quiet and the wind is blowing from the east, I go down to the water's edge and I listen.

And I hear her.
