The Wistful Saga

The glass shatters.

You do not see it fall. You hear it. A sharp crack. Like a bone snapping.

You are in the Hall of Whispers. The air is cold. It smells of dust and old iron. You are a guest here. You are not one of them. You know this. They know this.

Your name is Elias. You came from the south. The land where the sun burns the fields white. Here, the sky is gray. It hangs low over the castle walls. You have been here for three months. You study the texts. You copy the runes. Your hand is steady. Your mind is sharp.

Lord Aldous watches you. He sits on the high chair. His face is hidden in shadow. He speaks rarely. When he does, the words feel heavy. They sit on the table like stones.

"You have talent," he says.

He says it once. Then he is silent.

You work. You work until the candles gutter out. You work until your eyes bleed. The knowledge enters you. It is not like water. It is like fire. It burns. But you keep it inside. You hold it tight.

You meet Sarah. She is the kitchen maid. She is young. Her hands are rough. She looks at you with pity.

"You are wasting yourself," she says.

She brings you bread. It is stale. It is dry. But you eat it. You need the strength.

The court is a web. Everyone watches everyone. The nobles in their silk robes. The guards with their steel caps. They look at you and see a stranger. They look at you and see a threat. You are different. Your skin is darker. Your words are strange.

You ignore them. You focus on the book.

The book is old. The pages are brittle. The text is in a dead language. You can read it now. You can read it because you are the only one who can. This is the curse. This is the gift.

You find the passage. It is about power. It is about control. It says that the throne is not made of wood. It is made of blood. It says that to rule is to consume.

You look up. Lord Aldous is watching.

"Is that true?" you ask.

He does not answer. He stands. He walks to the window. The glass is cracked. A spider web hangs in the corner.

"Knowledge is a weight," he says. "It bends the spine."

He leaves.

You stay. You write down what you know. You write in the margins. You write in your own hand. You are building a map. A map of the dark.

Weeks pass. The winter sets in. The wind howls outside. The castle groans. You feel the cold in your bones.

You are summoned to the inner chamber. It is a small room. The walls are bare. There is a single table. There is a single chair.

Lord Aldous is there. He is older than you thought. His eyes are tired.

"Sit," he says.

You sit.

"Show me," he says.

You open the book. You point to the lines. You explain. You speak clearly. You speak simply. You do not hide your meaning. You do not soften the blow.

He listens. He does not interrupt. His face is stone.

When you finish, he is silent for a long time.

"Who else knows this?" he asks.

"No one," you say. "Only me."

He looks at you. There is fear in his eyes. There is anger.

"You have betrayed the trust of silence," he says.

"I have revealed the truth," you say.

"Truth is a weapon," he says. "You have handed it to the enemy."

The enemy. Who is the enemy?

He stands. He walks to the door. He opens it.

"Take him to the dungeon," he says to the guards.

The guards step forward. Their hands are on their swords.

You do not move. You do not fight. You know what is coming. You have always known.

They drag you out. Your feet scrape on the stone. The air is damp. It smells of rot.

You are thrown into a cell. The door slams. The lock clicks.

It is dark. Total darkness.

You sit on the floor. You breathe. In. Out.

You are not angry. You are not sad. You are calm.

You remember your mother. She was a woman of the earth. She grew vegetables in the dirt. She spoke of roots. She spoke of growth.

She told you, "The tree does not fight the wind. It bends. It survives."

But you are not a tree. You are a stone. You are hard.

You think of the book. You think of the words. You think of the power.

You realize the truth. The power was never in the words. The power was in the silence. By speaking, you broke the spell. You broke the order.

You are the anomaly. You are the crack in the glass.

Days pass. Or hours. Time has no meaning here.

A sound. A scrape.

The door opens.

Light floods in. It is blinding.

A woman enters. It is Sarah. The kitchen maid.

She is not alone. Behind her stand two men. They are not guards. They are scholars. They wear plain clothes.

Sarah looks at you. Her eyes are wet.

"I told them," she says. "I told them what you said."

You stand up. Your legs are weak.

"Why?" you ask.

She steps forward. She touches your face. Her hand is warm.

"Because you are not a monster," she says. "You are a man. And men deserve to be heard."

The scholars look at you. They do not look with pity. They look with interest.

"Come with us," one says. "There is work to do."

You look at Lord Aldous. He is standing in the hallway. He is watching. He does not stop you. He does not speak.

He knows he has lost.

You walk out. You walk past the hall. You walk past the courtyard. The sky is still gray. But the air feels different. It feels lighter.

You are leaving. You are going into the world.

You look back at the castle. It stands tall. It stands proud. But it is empty.

You turn away.

You take Sarah’s hand. She holds it tight.

You walk south. You walk toward the sun.

You carry the knowledge. It is heavy. It is painful. But it is yours.

You do not forget. You do not forgive. You simply move.

The glass is broken. The pieces are scattered.

You step over them.

You do not look down.

You keep walking.

The road is long. The road is hard. But you are alive.

You are free.

You are alone.

But you are not empty.

You have the story. You have the truth.

And the truth is enough.

You walk.

The wind blows.

You do not stop.
