The Pale Path

The ink did not dry. It hovered.

I held the quill between my thumb and forefinger. The tip was wet. A single drop, suspended, defied gravity. It did not fall. It stayed there, a black bead of potential. I watched it. I breathed. The air in the room was thin. It tasted of ozone and old paper.

I am Elias Thorne. Or I was. The name feels heavy now. Like a coat I have left on a hook in a house that no longer exists. I do not know where I am. The walls are white. They curve. They breathe. The floor is smooth. It reflects my shoes. My shoes are brown leather. They are scuffed.

I came here to find my work. I wrote things. I made marks on paper. I thought I was free. I was wrong. The marks were cages. The paper was a prison. I do not understand this yet. I am learning.

The drop falls.

It hits the page. It spreads. It becomes a word. I do not know what the word says. I cannot read it. The letters twist. They are made of light. They are made of shadow. They are made of something else. Something cold.

I look down. My hands are shaking. I am not afraid. Fear is a human thing. I am not human. Or I am not only human. I am a draft. I am a revision. I am the error that the editor left in.

There is a door. It is blue. It is small. It sits in the center of the far wall. It has no handle. It has no keyhole. I walk toward it. The floor is silent under my feet. The sound of my steps is swallowed.

I reach out. My fingers touch the wood. It is warm. It pulses. It beats like a heart. I pull. The door does not move. I push. It does not move. I listen. I hear a voice inside. It is my voice. It is saying my name.

Elias.

I do not answer. I cannot. My mouth is full of ink. I try to speak. I only cough. Black fluid spills from my lips. It drips onto the white floor. It stains the reflection of my face.

I am trapped. I know this now. The trap is the story. The story is the trap. I wrote myself into this corner. I wrote myself into this silence. I did it for the sake of the plot. I did it for the sake of the reader. I did not care that I would be stuck here. I did not care that I would lose my name. I only cared about the shape of the sentence.

This is the first turn. I see it. I am not the hero. I am the victim. I am the character who walks into the fire because the author needed heat. I am the one who dies so the others can live. I am the one who changes so the theme can be proven.

I sit down. I rest my back against the wall. The wall is soft. It is like flesh. I close my eyes. I count. One. Two. Three. The numbers do not change. The time does not move. I am outside of time. I am inside the word.

A sound. A scratching. It comes from the corner. It is small. It is quick. I open my eyes. A mouse. It is made of paper. Its ears are triangles. Its tail is a line. It looks at me. It does not run. It waits.

I watch it. It watches me. We are the same. We are both made of marks. We are both made of intent. It is a creature of the draft. It is a creature of the margin. It has no name. It has no past. It has no future. It is only here.

I feel a sadness. It is not for the mouse. It is for myself. I have lost my history. I have lost my body. I have lost my family. I have lost my home. I have only this. This white room. This blue door. This mouse. This ink.

I stand up. I walk to the mouse. I kneel. I offer my hand. The mouse comes forward. It sniffs my finger. Its nose is wet. It is cold. I hold my breath. I do not want to scare it. I do not want to break it. I am so careful. I am so gentle. I am the first time I have been gentle. I have always been sharp. I have always been quick. I have always been the one who cuts. Now I am the one who holds.

The mouse climbs onto my hand. It is light. It is nothing. It is weight.

I carry it. I walk to the door. I place the mouse on the floor. I press my hand against the wood. I push. I push with all my strength. I push with my mind. I push with the ink in my veins. The door does not move. The wood does not yield. I am not strong enough. I am not real enough.

I sit down again. I wait. The mouse curls up in the corner. It sleeps. I watch it sleep. I watch my own breath. I watch the ink in my veins. It moves. It flows. It is life. It is death. It is the same thing.

A light changes. The white becomes gray. The gray becomes dark. The dark becomes deep. I am sinking. I am falling. I am going down. I do not know where. I do not know why. I only know that I am going.

I hear the voice again. It is louder. It is clearer. It is not my voice. It is the voice of the one who reads. It is the voice of the one who watches. It is the voice of the one who judges.

You are not Elias.

I stop. I listen. I think. I look at my hands. They are translucent. I can see the lines inside them. They are like roots. They are like veins. They are like words.

I am not Elias.

I am the idea of Elias. I am the memory of Elias. I am the shadow of Elias. I am the echo.

I am the one who chooses.

The door opens.

It opens slowly. It creaks. The sound is loud. It is sharp. It cuts the air. Light pours in. It is not white. It is gold. It is warm. It is real.

I step back. I look at the mouse. It is gone. The corner is empty. The floor is clean. There is no stain. There is no ink. There is no mark.

I step through the door.

I am in a field. The grass is green. The sky is blue. The sun is bright. It is hot. I feel it on my face. I feel it on my skin. I feel it in my bones. I am solid. I am heavy. I am here.

I am in a town. I see houses. I see people. They are walking. They are talking. They are living. They do not look at me. They do not see me. I am invisible. I am transparent. I am a ghost.

I walk. I do not know where to go. I do not know where I am. I do not know who I am. I only know that I am here. I only know that I am free.

I see a woman. She is sitting on a bench. She is reading a book. She is old. Her hair is gray. Her face is kind. She is looking at me. She sees me. She smiles.

She does not say anything. She just smiles. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a knowing smile.

I sit down next to her. The bench is wood. It is cold. The air is cool. The wind blows. It moves the grass. It moves the clouds. It moves my hair.

I look at her. I look at the book in her hands. The cover is blue. It is the same color as the door. I lean forward. I look at the title.

It is my name.

Elias Thorne.

I look at her. I look at the book. I look at the sky. I understand.

I am not a person. I am a story. I am a tale. I am a memory. I am a dream. I am a ghost. I am a shadow. I am a word.

I am the one who chooses to be here.

I close my eyes. I feel the sun on my face. I feel the wind in my hair. I feel the wood of the bench under my back. I feel the weight of my body. I feel the beat of my heart.

I am alive.

I open my eyes. The woman is still there. She is still reading. She is still smiling. She is looking at me.

I look at her. I do not speak. I do not need to speak. I have said everything. I have done everything. I have chosen.

I stand up. I walk away. I walk into the town. I walk into the crowd. I walk into the life.

I am not Elias.

I am the choice.

I am the path.

I am the pale path that leads to the light.

I am the one who walks it.

I am the one who chooses it.

I am the one who defines it.

I am the one who is.

The sun is high. The shadows are short. The world is bright. The world is clear. The world is mine.

I breathe.

I live.

I am.
