The Pale Dance
"You broke the seal," said the old woman.
Her voice was thin. It scraped against the air like a nail on slate.
Caleb did not answer. He stood in the center of the room. The floorboards groaned under his boots. They were heavy. Iron-shod. They belonged to the Watch.
The room was cold. Dust motes danced in the single beam of light from the high window. The air smelled of rot. Of wet wool. Of old blood.
"Who sent you?" she asked.
She sat in a high-backed chair. Her hands were wrapped in white cloth. Her fingers twitched. Like worms.
Caleb looked at the object on the table.
It was a bowl.
It was black. It was cracked. It was filled with water.
It was not just a bowl.
It was the heart of the house. It was the memory of the village. It was the thing they feared.
He reached out.
His hand shook.
He was a soldier. He had killed men. He had broken bones. He did not shake for men.
He shook for this.
"Give it to me," he said.
His voice was low. It was rough.
The old woman laughed.
It was a dry sound. Like leaves crushing underfoot.
"You think you are the hero," she said.
She looked at him. Her eyes were milky. Blind.
"You think you are the light. You are the shadow. You are the thing we cast out."
Caleb stepped forward.
The shadows in the corners of the room seemed to lengthen. They reached for him.
"I am the law," he said.
"The law is a lie," she said. "The law is a cage. And you are the key that fits no lock."
He grabbed the bowl.
The water spilled.
It hit the floor.
It did not splash.
It froze.
Instantly.
Ice spread across the wood. It raced toward his boots. It raced toward her chair.
Caleb pulled his hand back.
He felt a pain.
It was in his chest.
It was in his head.
It was in his bones.
He fell to his knees.
The bowl was still in his hand.
The ice was on his skin.
It burned.
But it was cold.
It was so cold.
He looked up.
The old woman was gone.
The chair was empty.
The white cloth lay on the floor.
There was no one there.
Only the dust.
Only the light.
Caleb stood up.
His legs were stiff.
His mind was clear.
For the first time in his life, he was clear.
He looked at the bowl.
It was empty now.
The water was gone.
The ice was gone.
It was just clay.
Black clay.
Cracked.
He held it.
It was warm.
It was alive.
He walked to the door.
He opened it.
The night was dark.
The wind howled.
It screamed.
It raged.
It was angry.
It was hungry.
Caleb stepped out.
The cold hit him.
It was not the cold of the room.
It was the cold of the world.
It was the cold of justice.
He walked down the path.
The path was muddy.
The trees were black.
The stars were out.
They were bright.
They were cold.
They were watching.
He walked to the village.
The village was silent.
The houses were dark.
The windows were shuttered.
The people were afraid.
They had been afraid for years.
They had been afraid of him.
They had been afraid of the Watch.
They had been afraid of the truth.
Caleb walked into the square.
The square was empty.
The fountain was dry.
The statue of the King stood in the center.
It was stone.
It was cold.
It was dead.
Caleb looked at the statue.
He saw his own face.
It was carved in the stone.
It was not his face.
It was the face of a monster.
It was the face of a tyrant.
It was the face of a liar.
He raised the bowl.
He threw it.
It flew through the air.
It hit the base of the statue.
It shattered.
The pieces scattered.
Black shards.
Like shrapnel.
Like blood.
Like tears.
The statue cracked.
A great crack ran down its face.
The stone groaned.
It fell.
It crashed to the ground.
Dust rose.
It covered the square.
It covered him.
It covered the world.
Caleb stood in the dust.
He was alone.
He was free.
He was broken.
The people came out of their houses.
They stood in the shadows.
They watched.
They did not move.
They did not speak.
They were afraid.
But they were not afraid of him.
They were afraid of the silence.
They were afraid of the change.
They were afraid of the end.
Caleb walked to the edge of the square.
He stopped.
He looked back.
The statue was broken.
The bowl was broken.
He was broken.
But he was whole.
He turned away.
He walked into the night.
The wind followed him.
The stars followed him.
The darkness followed him.
But it did not catch him.
It could not catch him.
He was the light.
He was the shadow.
He was the truth.
He walked on.
He did not look back.
He did not stop.
He did not sleep.
He walked until the sun rose.
The sun was red.
The sun was blood.
The sun was fire.
It burned the dust.
It burned the fear.
It burned the lies.
Caleb stopped.
He was at the edge of the forest.
The trees were tall.
The trees were old.
The trees were wise.
He looked at them.
He saw his face in the bark.
He saw his hands in the branches.
He saw his soul in the roots.
He was one with them.
He was one with the earth.
He was one with the stone.
He was one with the water.
He was one with the air.
He was one with the light.
He was one with the dark.
He was one with the life.
He was one with the death.
He was one with the truth.
He sat down.
He rested.
He breathed.
The air was fresh.
The air was sweet.
The air was pure.
He closed his eyes.
He listened.
He heard the wind.
He heard the birds.
He heard the water.
He heard the earth.
He heard the heart.
His own heart.
It beat.
It was strong.
It was steady.
It was true.
He opened his eyes.
The world was new.
The world was clean.
The world was clear.
He stood up.
He walked on.
He did not know where he was going.
He did not need to know.
He knew who he was.
He knew what he had done.
He knew what he was.
He was the soldier.
He was the watcher.
He was the judge.
He was the executioner.
He was the savior.
He was the damned.
He was the free.
He walked into the light.
The light embraced him.
The light held him.
The light loved him.
He was not alone.
He was never alone.
He was part of something.
He was part of the whole.
He was part of the truth.
And the truth was enough.
It was always enough.
It would always be enough.
He walked on.
The story ends.
The silence begins.
The dust settles.
The light fades.
The dark returns.
But it is a good dark.
It is a safe dark.
It is a true dark.
And in the dark, there is peace.
There is rest.
There is love.
There is justice.
It has come.
It is here.
It is now.
It is us.
It is you.
It is me.
It is all.
It is nothing.
It is everything.
It is the end.
It is the beginning.
It is the dance.
It is the pale dance.
It is the final dance.
And we are all dancing.
In the dust.
In the light.
In the dark.
In the truth.
In the love.
In the justice.
We dance.
We do not stop.
We do not fear.
We do not hide.
We are free.
We are one.
We are alive.
We are home.
