The Pale Tale

The mud sucked at the boots of Captain Elias Thorne. He did not feel it. He only felt the weight of the iron. The iron was his name. The iron was his face. The iron was the cold thing in his belly.

He stood in the ditch. The rain fell like a gray curtain. It hid the world. It hid the enemy. It hid the truth.

"Forward," said Lieutenant Miller. His voice was thin. It was a thread in the wind.

Elias moved. His legs were heavy. They were made of stone. He carried the rifle. The rifle was his hand. The rifle was his eye.

The enemy was close. They were shadows. They were shapes in the fog. They were the same as him. They wore the same gray. They had the same hunger.

A shot cracked. The air tore. Elias fell. He did not know why. He felt the heat. He felt the stop.

He lay in the mud. The rain washed over him. It was cold. It was clean.

He looked up. The sky was a hole. It was black. It was empty.

He was alone.

The battle ended. The guns stopped. The screams faded. The silence was loud. It was a roar. It was a bell.

Elias stood up. His leg was gone. He did not feel the pain. He felt the lightness. He felt the freedom.

He walked. He walked through the field. The bodies lay in the rows. They were like crops. They were like stones.

He saw a face. It was a young man. The boy had a blue eye. The boy had a red mouth. The boy was dead.

Elias knelt. He touched the face. The skin was cold. The skin was smooth.

"Who are you?" Elias asked.

The boy did not answer. The boy could not answer.

Elias looked at his own hands. They were red. The blood was dark. The blood was wet.

He knew the face. He knew the eye. He knew the mouth.

It was his own face.

The mirror broke. The glass fell. The shards cut his palms. He did not feel the pain. He felt the truth.

He was not a captain. He was not a man. He was a thing. He was a machine. He was a ghost.

He walked to the village. The village was quiet. The houses were dark. The windows were eyes.

He entered a house. The door was open. The floor was wood. The wood was old.

A woman sat in the chair. She was old. Her hair was white. Her eyes were blind.

"Who goes there?" she asked. Her voice was dry. It was like leaves.

"I am Elias," he said.

"I know you," she said. "I have seen you."

"No," he said. "You have not seen me."

"Yes," she said. "I have seen you. You are the one who does not bleed. You are the one who does not die. You are the shadow."

Elias felt the cold. It was in his bones. It was in his soul.

"I am tired," he said.

"Sit," she said.

He sat. The chair creaked. The chair was weak.

"Tell me," he said. "Tell me what I am."

"You are the wound," she said. "You are the cut. You are the blood that will not stop."

Elias looked at his hands. The blood was still there. It was drying. It was cracking.

"I want to stop," he said.

"You cannot stop," she said. "You are the storm. You are the fire. You are the end."

Elias stood up. He felt the rage. It was a beast. It was a wolf. It was a king.

He picked up the chair. He threw it at the wall. The wood splintered. The wall cracked.

"Speak!" he roared. "Speak the truth!"

The woman did not flinch. She sat still. She was a stone. She was a root.

"The truth is simple," she said. "You are here because you must be here. You are the sacrifice. You are the price. You are the redemption."

Elias laughed. The laugh was ugly. The laugh was bitter.

"Redemption?" he said. "I have killed. I have destroyed. I have sinned. There is no redemption. There is only ash."

"There is always redemption," she said. "It is in the letting go. It is in the release. It is in the end."

Elias felt the doubt. The doubt was a seed. It grew. It spread.

"Show me," he said. "Show me the end."

The woman pointed to the window. The rain had stopped. The moon was out. The moon was pale. The moon was full.

Elias looked out. The field was white. The bodies were white. The mud was white.

He saw a figure. It was small. It was far.

He walked to the window. He opened it. The air was cold. The air was sharp.

He jumped.

He fell. The air rushed. The world spun.

He hit the ground. The ground was soft. The ground was wet.

He did not die. He did not break. He was whole. He was one.

He stood up. He looked at the house. The window was a hole. The moon looked in.

He walked away. He walked into the dark. He walked into the night.

He walked for days. He walked for weeks. He did not eat. He did not drink. He did not sleep.

He was a ghost. He was a wind. He was a thought.

He reached the city. The city was big. The city was loud. The city was alive.

People walked. They spoke. They laughed. They lived.

Elias walked among them. They did not see him. They did not know him. They did not care.

He felt the presence. The presence was strong. The presence was warm.

He saw a group. They were children. They were playing. They were running. They were singing.

They sang a song. The song was old. The song was new.

The song was his song.

Elias stopped. He listened. The words were clear. The words were true.

*We are the dust. We are the clay. We are the fire. We are the rain. We are the ones who go. We are the ones who stay.*

He felt the tears. The tears were hot. The tears were clean.

He remembered the boy. He remembered the face. He remembered the eye.

He was not the killer. He was the shield. He was the wall. He was the gate.

He had not killed. He had held. He had held the door. He had held the line.

The enemy had passed. The enemy had gone. The world had saved.

He was the cost. He was the price. He was the tax.

It was fair. It was right. It was just.

Elias smiled. The smile was small. The smile was real.

He walked to the river. The river was wide. The river was deep. The river was cold.

He looked at the water. The water was clear. The water was still.

He saw his reflection. The face was old. The face was tired. The face was free.

He raised his hand. He waved. The hand was steady. The hand was strong.

He stepped into the water. The water was cold. The water was heavy.

He sank. The water covered him. The water filled his lungs. The water filled his heart.

He did not fight. He did not struggle. He let go. He let go. He let go.

The pain was gone. The fear was gone. The anger was gone.

There was only peace. There was only light. There was only love.

He was with them. He was with the children. He was with the dead. He was with the living.

He was the community. He was the whole. He was the one.

The water closed over him. The world was quiet. The world was still.

The moon watched. The moon did not blink. The moon did not care.

The river flowed. The river did not stop. The river did not wait.

It carried him. It carried him away. It carried him home.

The end was not an end. The end was a beginning. The end was a door.

The door was open. The light was bright. The light was warm.

Elias walked into the light. He walked into the dark. He walked into the truth.

He was free. He was free. He was free.
