The Distant Clue

The feast was a wound in the dark. Candles gutted on the high table, dripping wax like frozen tears. I sat at the foot. My knees shook. Not from cold. The cold was a lie. The cold was in the air, yes, sharp as a knife, biting through my wool. But the shaking was inside. It was the fear of the ink.

I held the paper. It was thin. Pale. It smelled of iron and old blood. The scribe had handed it to me before the guests arrived. He had not looked at me. He looked at the floor. His hands were black with soot. He was a traitor to his own silence. He had given me the mark.

The Lord of the Hall sat at the head. He ate. The sound of his chewing was loud. A wet, rhythmic thud. He did not see me. Or he did not care. To him, I was a shadow. A servant. A boy with dirty hands. I was seven. My name was Thomas. But that name meant nothing here. Names are heavy. They carry weight. I was light. I was air. I was nothing.

The paper was a clue. Or so I thought. I had chased it. I had run through the mist, through the broken hedges, into the deep wood where the trees twisted like old men. I had found it in a hollow. A black mark. A symbol. It was a key. I believed it. I was a child. I believed in keys. I believed that if I had the right key, the door would open. The light would come in. The dark would go away.

But the dark did not go away. It grew.

The Lord spoke. His voice was low. A rumble. Like stones rolling in a river. He spoke of justice. He spoke of order. He said that the law was the only thing that held the world together. Without it, we were beasts. We were mud. He looked at the scribe. The scribe bowed. His head touched the table. The scribe had betrayed the law. He had given me the mark. He had given me the tool of my undoing.

I looked at the paper. The mark was a circle. A perfect circle. It was a seal. It was a promise. It was a lie. I traced it with my finger. The ink was dry. It crumbled. A tiny flake fell on the table. It was black. It was like a speck of dirt. It was like a dead fly.

The guests laughed. They drank. The wine was red. It stained their lips. It stained their teeth. They were happy. They were safe. They did not know. Or they did not care. I was the outsider. I was the one who saw. Or so I told myself. I was the hero. I was the seeker. I had found the truth. I had the proof.

The truth was a burden. It pressed on my chest. It was a stone. I could not breathe. I wanted to speak. I wanted to show them. I wanted to say, Look. This is the mark. This is the sign. The Lord is a killer. The scribe is a liar. The feast is a crime.

But I did not speak. I was afraid. I was a child. I was small. The world was big. The world was cruel. I put the paper in my pocket. I pulled my knees up to my chin. I watched the candlelight flicker. It danced. It played tricks. Shadows stretched and shrank. They moved like living things. They reached for me.

The Lord stood. He raised his cup. He toasted. He toasted the earth. He toasted the rain. He toasted the harvest. He toasted the peace. The guests raised their cups. The sound of glass clinking was sharp. It cut the air. It cut my heart.

I thought of the wood. I thought of the hollow. I thought of the wind. The wind had howled. It had screamed. It had tried to take me. I had fought it. I had fought the dark. I had fought the fear. I had won. I had the mark. I had the victory.

But victory was cold. Victory was empty.

I looked at the scribe. He was eating. He chewed slowly. He did not look at me. He did not care. He was free. He had given me the burden. He had washed his hands. He was clean. I was dirty. I was stained with ink. I was stained with blood.

The mark in my pocket was a mirror. It reflected me. It showed me my own face. It showed me my own fear. It showed me my own weakness. I was not a hero. I was a victim. I was a fool. I had chased a ghost. I had chased a shadow. I had chased a lie.

The feast ended. The guests left. The candles burned low. The wax pooled. The table was messy. Bones. Stains. Crumbs. The Lord left last. He did not look at me. He walked out. The door closed. The lock clicked. The sound was final.

I was alone.

The room was silent. The silence was loud. It roared. It screamed. It shook the walls. I stood up. My legs were weak. I swayed. I fell. I hit the floor. The wood was hard. It was cold. It was real.

I took the paper out. I looked at it. The circle was broken. A crack ran through it. It was not a seal. It was a wound. It was a scar. It was the end.

I understood. I had not found a clue. I had found a curse. I had not sought justice. I had sought death. I had not been a hero. I had been a tool. I had been a puppet. The scribe had pulled my strings. The Lord had set the stage. And I had played my part.

I looked at the crack in the paper. It was a line. It was a path. It was a way out. But there was no way out. I was trapped. I was locked in. I was sealed.

The ink was dry. It was dead. It was gone.

I threw the paper in the fire. The flame caught it. It curled. It blackened. It turned to ash. The ash rose. It danced. It faded. It was gone.

I sat by the fire. The heat was warm. It was gentle. It was kind. I closed my eyes. I listened to the crackle. I listened to the wind. I listened to the dark.

I had sought the light. I had found the dark. I had sought the truth. I had found the lie. I had sought the justice. I had found the silence.

The silence was the answer. The silence was the peace. The silence was the end.

I did not move. I did not speak. I did not cry. I was still. I was calm. I was empty.

The fire died. The room went dark. The cold came. It crept in. It wrapped around me. It held me. It was soft. It was heavy. It was home.

I was Thomas. I was a boy. I was a child. I was a name. I was a shadow. I was a memory.

The mark was gone. The clue was gone. The quest was gone.

I was left.

I was alone.

I was free.

The darkness was a blanket. It covered me. It hid me. It protected me. I did not need to see. I did not need to know. I did not need to speak.

I let go.

I let go of the paper. I let go of the fear. I let go of the hope. I let go of the self.

I was nothing.

I was everything.

The wind howled. It was a song. It was a lullaby. It was a prayer.

I slept.

I dreamed of fire. I dreamed of ash. I dreamed of silence.

I woke. The light was gray. The sun was pale. It did not warm. It did not shine. It just was.

I stood up. My legs were stiff. My body was cold. I was alive. I was here. I was real.

I walked to the door. I opened it. The air was sharp. It was clear. It was clean.

I stepped out. The yard was empty. The grass was wet. The dew was cold. It stuck to my skin. It was a kiss. It was a touch. It was a sign.

I looked at the sky. It was wide. It was vast. It was empty.

I had chased the mark. I had found the void. I had sought the clue. I had found the truth.

The truth was simple. The truth was plain. The truth was bare.

There was no justice. There was no order. There was no law. There was only the wind. There was only the dark. There was only the silence.

I walked. I did not know where I was going. I did not care. I was walking. I was moving. I was alive.

The path was long. The road was hard. The world was wide.

I was small. I was weak. I was alone.

But I was free.

The mark was gone. The paper was gone. The scribe was gone. The Lord was gone.

I was here.

I was now.

I was Thomas.

The wind blew. It carried my name. It carried my breath. It carried my soul.

It took me.

It took me away.

I was gone.

I was free.

The silence was the answer. The silence was the peace. The silence was the end.

I did not look back. I did not look forward. I did not look up. I did not look down.

I looked within.

I found nothing.

I found everything.

I was empty.

I was full.

I was home.

The fire was out. The ash was cold. The room was dark. The door was open. The wind was singing.

I was gone.

I was free.

The end.
