The Golden Compass

The dream is not a dream. It is a state of being. You are cold. You are wet. You are the city. The city is you.

You lie in the mud of the cobblestones. The rain is heavy. It is old. It smells of iron and rot. You are Edward Ashworth. You are the Inspector. But you are also the stone beneath your face. You are the puddle reflecting the gaslight. You cannot separate the self from the street. This is the wear. This is the end.

You wake. Or you do not. The distinction is lost. You are in a room. It is small. It is dark. There is a window. Outside, the city sleeps. Or it screams. It is hard to tell. The sound is inside your head.

Your wife is there. Margaret. She sits by the fire. Her face is pale. Her eyes are hollow. She looks at you. She does not speak. She knows. You know she knows. The air between you is thick. It is heavy with silence. It is heavy with grief.

You stand. Your legs are weak. Your bones ache. The pain is deep. It is in your marrow. It is the pain of the stone. You are wearing it. It is wearing you.

"Edward," she says. Her voice is thin. Like paper. Like ice.

"I am here," you say. Your voice is strange. It is not your voice. It is the voice of the wind. It is the voice of the dust.

She moves closer. She touches your hand. Her fingers are cold. You flinch. You pull away. You do not want to touch. Touch is danger. Touch is loss.

The case is on the table. Papers. Notes. Maps. The ink is dry. The case is closed. But it is not over. It never is. You are the investigator. You look for the truth. You find the lie. You are the lie.

The city is sick. It has been sick for a long time. The sickness is in the water. It is in the air. It is in the people. They walk with their heads down. They do not look at each other. They fear the touch. They fear the gaze.

You walk into the city. The streets are empty. The fog is thick. It clings to your coat. It clings to your skin. You are invisible. You are visible. You are both.

You pass the market. The stalls are empty. The fruit is rotting. The apples are brown. The pears are soft. The smell is sweet. It is the smell of death.

You pass the church. The doors are closed. The bells are silent. The god is dead. Or he is sleeping. It does not matter.

You reach the square. The fountain is dry. The statue is broken. One arm is missing. The face is worn. The eyes are gone. You look at the statue. You see yourself. The stone is soft. The stone is flesh. The flesh is stone.

A man is there. He is small. He is old. He sits on the ground. He is the witness. He sees you. He does not move. He does not speak. He is part of the city. He is the dust.

"Who are you?" you ask.

"I am here," he says. His voice is low. It is the voice of the earth.

"What is happening?"

"The end."

"What end?"

"The truth."

You stand still. The fog swirls around you. It touches your face. It is cold. It is wet. You feel the weight of the city. It is on your shoulders. It is in your chest. It is in your soul.

You remember the case. The missing child. The stolen gold. The murder in the alley. You looked for the criminal. You found the system. The system is the criminal. The law is the lie. The justice is the cage. You are the cage.

You thought you were free. You thought you were above. You were wrong. You are below. You are in the mud. You are in the root.

The man smiles. His teeth are yellow. His eyes are bright. He is happy. He is free. He is nothing.

"Let go," he says.

"I cannot."

"You must."

You look at your hands. They are stained. The ink is under the nails. The blood is in the cuts. You cannot wash it off. It is part of you.

You think of Margaret. You think of her face. You think of her touch. You think of the fire. You think of the warmth. The warmth is a lie. The warmth is a burn.

You love her. It is a fire. It consumes. It destroys. It leaves ash. You are the ash. She is the ash. You are one.

You turn away. You walk back. The fog is thicker. The city is darker. The sound is louder. It is the sound of your own heart. It is the sound of the city.

You enter the room. The fire is low. The coals are red. The light is dim. Margaret is asleep. Her face is peaceful. She does not know. She does not see.

You sit down. The chair creaks. The wood is old. The wood is tired. You are tired.

You pick up a pen. The ink is black. You write. You do not know what you write. You write the truth. You write the lie. You write the name.

Edward Ashworth. Inspector. Dead.

You stop. The pen hovers. The ink drips. It falls on the page. It spreads. It is a stain. It is a hole.

You look at Margaret. She stirs. She opens her eyes. She looks at you. Her eyes are wide. Her eyes are afraid.

"Edward?" she whispers.

You cannot speak. Your throat is tight. Your throat is stone.

You reach for her. You take her hand. Her skin is warm. Her pulse is fast. You feel the life in her. It is strong. It is fragile. It is yours.

You squeeze. She does not pull away. She looks at you. She sees the change. She sees the end.

"I am sorry," you say. The words are heavy. They are stones.

"Stop," she says. Her voice is strong. Her voice is iron.

You do not stop. You cannot. The city is in you. The city is hungry. The city wants to be one.

You pull her close. You hold her tight. You feel her breath. It is hot. It is sweet. You smell her hair. You smell the soap. You smell the fear.

You are the detective. You found the killer. The killer is love. The killer is duty. The killer is the self.

You close your eyes. The darkness is deep. The darkness is full. You are in the dark. You are in the mud. You are in the stone.

You hear her cry. The sound is sharp. The sound is bright. It cuts the air. It cuts your soul.

You do not open your eyes. You do not move. You are still. You are fixed. You are the anchor.

The fire dies. The room is dark. The city is silent. The rain stops. The fog lifts.

You are alone. You are together. You are the city.

The man is gone. The witness is gone. The truth is gone. The lie remains.

You are the lie.

The years pass. Or they do not. Time is a circle. Time is a line. Time is a blur.

The city grows. The city changes. The streets are paved. The buildings are tall. The light is electric. The smell is different. The smell is chemical. The smell is clean.

The statue is removed. The square is paved. The fountain is gone. The memory is gone.

Margaret is gone. The house is gone. The room is gone. The fire is gone.

You are still here. You are in the wall. You are in the floor. You are in the brick. You are in the dust.

People walk over you. They do not see you. They do not know you. They are busy. They are loud. They are alive.

You watch them. You watch their faces. You watch their eyes. You see the fear. You see the love. You see the wear.

They are the same. They are the stone. They are the mud. They are the city.

You want to speak. You want to tell them. You want to say the truth. The truth is nothing. The truth is silence.

You stay. You wait. You wear.

The sun sets. The light is gold. The light is red. The light is fading.

The shadows lengthen. The shadows are long. The shadows are dark.

You are in the shadow. You are in the light.

You are the golden compass. You point nowhere. You point everywhere. You point to the void.

You are content. You are complete. You are empty.

The wind blows. The leaves fall. The dust settles.

You are still.

The end is not an end. It is a beginning. It is a loop. It is a breath.

You breathe in. You breathe out.

The city breathes.

You are the city.
