The Distant Threshold
The soup was hot. It burned the roof of his mouth. Arthur chewed. The beef was tough. He tore it with his teeth. Blood trickled down his chin. He wiped it with a napkin. The napkin was white. It turned red.
He lived in a house by the coast. The wind screamed. The windows rattled. He was a detective. Or so they said. He wore a uniform. The fabric itched. It smelled of sweat and rust. He looked in the mirror. His eyes were hollow. They were the eyes of a wolf. Or a dog. He did not know which.
The kitchen was cold. The stove hissed. The blue flame flickered. It danced like a ghost. Arthur stared at the pot. The liquid boiled. Bubbles rose. They popped. They died.
He had been sent here to find a thief. A thief of souls. The town whispered. They pointed at the cliffs. They pointed at the sea. They said the sea took things. It took memories. It took names. It took the warmth from your bones.
Arthur did not believe in the sea. He believed in evidence. He believed in fingerprints. He believed in the weight of a body. He believed in the smell of death. But here, the smell was different. It was salt. It was rot. It was old.
He ate the last bite. He swallowed. It felt like a stone. It settled in his gut. Heavy. Cold.
A knock at the door. Three sharp raps.
Arthur stood. His knees popped. He was old. He was tired. He walked to the door. The floorboards groaned. He opened it.
No one was there.
The wind howled. It tore at his coat. He shivered. He looked down. A single shoe lay on the mat. It was small. It was blue. It was wet.
He picked it up. The leather was soft. It had been worn for years. It had been worn by a child. Or a woman. It was too big for a child. It was too small for a man.
He held the shoe. He looked at the sky. The clouds were black. They swirled. They looked like eyes.
"Who is there?" he called out.
No answer. Just the wind.
He stepped outside. The grass was wet. It stuck to his boots. He saw footprints in the mud. They led away from the house. They led toward the cliff.
He followed.
The air was thick. It pressed against his skin. He could not breathe. His chest tightened. He gasped. He coughed. Blood spattered the grass.
He ran. His heart pounded. It hammered against his ribs. Like a bird trapped in a cage. He ran until his lungs burned. Until his legs gave way.
He fell. He hit the ground hard. The pain was sharp. It was bright. It was white.
He looked up. The cliff was above him. The sea was below. The waves crashed. They roared. They screamed.
He saw a figure.
A woman. She stood on the edge. Her hair was white. It flew in the wind. She wore a red dress. It was stained. It was dark.
She turned. She looked at him. Her face was hidden. It was a mask. It was bone.
"Arthur," she said.
Her voice was low. It was soft. It was like wind through dry leaves.
"Who are you?" he asked.
He did not know why he asked. He knew. He had always known.
"I am the threshold," she said.
She stepped forward. The ground crumbled. Dirt fell into the sea. The sea swallowed it.
"I have waited for you," she said.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because you are hungry," she said.
Arthur looked at his hands. They were trembling. He looked at the shoe in his pocket. It was warm. It was alive.
"I am not hungry," he said.
He lied. He was starving. He had been starving for years. He had eaten everything. He had eaten the food. He had eaten the silence. He had eaten the truth.
But he was still hungry.
The woman smiled. It was a cruel smile. It was a sad smile. It was the smile of a mother who has lost everything.
"Come," she said.
She pointed to the edge. The drop was steep. The wind pushed him. He fell backward. He grabbed the rock. His fingers slipped.
He screamed.
He fell.
The air rushed past him. The sea rushed up. It was cold. It was black. It was endless.
He hit the water.
It was not water. It was soup.
It was hot. It was thick. It tasted of iron. It tasted of fear.
He swam. He kicked. He thrashed. But the liquid held him. It was sticky. It was heavy. It wrapped around his limbs. It wrapped around his neck.
He coughed. He choked. He tried to scream. But no sound came out.
He looked up. The surface was far away. It was a mirror. He saw his own face. It was distorted. It was melting.
He saw the woman above. She was watching. She was smiling.
He sank.
The darkness closed in.
It was quiet.
It was peaceful.
He remembered.
He remembered the first time.
He was young. He was a soldier. He was in a trench. The mud was deep. The rain was cold. He was hungry. He ate a tin of soup. It was cold. It was bland. It was nothing.
He remembered the second time.
He was a cop. He was in a city. The smoke was thick. The fire was hot. He was thirsty. He drank a bottle of water. It was warm. It was flat. It was nothing.
He remembered the third time.
He was here. In the house. He was a detective. He was alone. He was hungry. He ate the beef. It was tough. It was raw. It was everything.
He understood.
He could not stop.
He could not run.
He could not hide.
He was the vessel. He was the cup. He was the bowl.
He filled up. He overflowed. He spilled.
He was the threshold.
He opened his mouth.
The soup poured out.
It was red.
It was hot.
It was him.
The woman reached down. Her hand was long. Her fingers were pale. She touched his face. She wiped the red from his cheek.
"Thank you," she said.
She pulled him up.
He rose. He broke the surface. He gasped. He breathed.
The air was clean. The wind was gentle. The sun was out. It was bright. It was warm.
He stood on the shore. The water receded. It left a trail of foam. It left a trail of salt.
He looked at the house. It was gone. There was only sand. There was only rock. There was only the sea.
He looked at his hands. They were clean. They were empty.
He felt light. He felt free.
He walked toward the village. The path was clear. The flowers were blooming. The birds were singing.
He was happy.
He was full.
He was done.
He did not look back.
He did not think about the soup.
He did not think about the hunger.
He did not think about the woman.
He just walked.
The sun set. The stars came out. The moon rose. It was full. It was bright. It was white.
It looked like an eye.
It watched him.
He smiled.
He closed his eyes.
He slept.
He did not wake up.
He did not need to.
He was where he belonged.
He was on the other side.
He was free.
Or so he thought.
The wind picked up. It howled. It screamed. It tore at the grass.
The ground shook. The sand shifted. The rocks cracked.
The sea rose. It climbed. It crept. It whispered.
It came for him.
It came for them all.
The cycle began.
The cycle always begins.
It never ends.
It just waits.
It just hungers.
It just remembers.
Arthur opened his eyes.
He was in the kitchen. The stove hissed. The blue flame flickered. The soup was hot. It burned the roof of his mouth.
He chewed. The beef was tough. He tore it with his teeth. Blood trickled down his chin.
He wiped it with a napkin. The napkin was white. It turned red.
He looked in the mirror. His eyes were hollow.
He was hungry.
He was always hungry.
The door knocked.
Three sharp raps.
He stood. He walked to the door. He opened it.
No one was there.
Just a shoe.
Small. Blue. Wet.
He picked it up.
He smiled.
He knew what to do.
He knew where to go.
He knew who to find.
He was the threshold.
And he was ready.
He stepped outside.
The wind screamed.
The sea waited.
The cycle continued.
It was inevitable.
It was eternal.
It was him.
He was the food.
He was the drug.
He was the cure.
He was the disease.
He was the threshold.
He crossed it.
He crossed it again.
He crossed it forever.
The soup was hot.
It burned.
It was perfect.
He drank.
He swallowed.
He died.
He lived.
He was hungry.
He was full.
He was gone.
He was here.
He was everything.
He was nothing.
The wind howled.
The sea roared.
The door closed.
The light went out.
The story ended.
Or did it?
No.
It never ends.
It just waits for the next mouth.
It just waits for the next hunger.
It just waits for the next threshold.
It is patient.
It is cruel.
It is kind.
It is the soup.
It is the life.
It is the death.
It is the loop.
It is the truth.
And the truth is this:
We are all hungry.
We are all thirsty.
We are all lost.
We are all finding our way home.
And home is the soup.
And the soup is us.
And we are the soup.
And the soup is the door.
And the door is the threshold.
And the threshold is the end.
And the end is the beginning.
And the beginning is the hunger.
And the hunger is the drive.
And the drive is the life.
And the life is the breath.
And the breath is the wind.
And the wind is the sea.
And the sea is the void.
And the void is the silence.
And the silence is the soup.
And the soup is hot.
And it burns.
And it feeds.
And it kills.
And it lives.
And it waits.
It waits for you.
It waits for me.
It waits for us all.
Open your mouth.
Take a bite.
Taste the salt.
Taste the iron.
Taste the fear.
Taste the love.
Taste the truth.
It is sweet.
It is bitter.
It is real.
It is now.
It is here.
It is you.
Eat.
Drink.
Live.
Die.
Repeat.
The soup is hot.
The soup is hot.
The soup is hot.
