The Distant Legend

The iron ring on your left hand is cold, heavier than it should be, and it has started to bite into the flesh of your knuckles in a way that reminds you of the first frost that hit the orchards back in the valley, a chill that didn’t just sit on the surface but seeped into the bone and stayed there long after the sun had returned, so you keep flexing your fingers under the desk, trying to shake off the sensation of being trapped, of being encased in something that is slowly turning into a prison for the very hand that was supposed to hold it.

You are sitting in the archive room of the Order of the Silver Veil, a place that smells of dried lavender, old dust, and the metallic tang of fear, and the walls are lined with shelves that stretch up into a darkness you cannot see, holding the records of every oath made, every sin confessed, and every soul judged by the men who wear the grey robes and speak with the calm, terrifying certainty of those who believe they own the truth.

Thomas Bradshaw, the High Archivist, stands by the window, his back to you, and he is looking out at the stone courtyard where the rain is falling in thick, grey sheets that blur the world outside into a smear of water and shadow, and he is holding a candle that flickers in the draft, casting long, dancing shadows that look like the fingers of the dead reaching for the light.

"You know what they say about you, Elias," Thomas says, and his voice is soft, almost gentle, but there is an edge to it, a sharpness that cuts through the quiet of the room like a blade through silk, "they say you are the only one who can still feel the weight of the oath, that your blood is too pure for the corruption that has spread through the rest of us, and they say that because of this, you are the one who will have to carry the burden of the final seal, the one that will keep the darkness at bay for another hundred years, but they don’t tell you that the seal requires a sacrifice, and they don’t tell you that the sacrifice is you, and they don’t tell you that your wife, Margaret, is the key that will unlock the door to your own annihilation."

You don’t turn around, you don’t look at him, you just keep looking at the iron ring on your hand, watching the way the light catches the edge of the metal, seeing the way it reflects your own face back at you, a face that looks older than it should, a face that has seen too much pain and too little joy, a face that has learned to hide the fear behind a mask of indifference, but the mask is cracking, the cracks are widening, and you can feel the truth pouring out of you like blood from a wound that will not close.

"I don't want to be a sacrifice, Thomas," you say, and your voice sounds strange to your own ears, hollow and distant, like the sound of wind blowing through an empty house, "I want to go home, I want to see Margaret, I want to sit by the fire and listen to the rain and forget that this place exists, forget that we are bound by oaths that were made by men who are dead, by men who did not understand the cost of what they asked us to do, by men who thought that power was something you could hold in your hands, something you could keep safe in a vault, something you could trade for peace, but they were wrong, they were so wrong, and now we are paying for their mistakes with our lives, with our souls, with the lives of the people we love, and I am tired, Thomas, I am so tired that I can feel the exhaustion in my bones, in my blood, in the very air I breathe, and I don’t know if I can do this anymore, I don’t know if I have the strength to fight against the darkness, I don’t know if I have the strength to fight against the Order, I don’t know if I have the strength to fight against myself."

Thomas turns around, and his face is pale, his eyes are wide, and there is a look in them that you have not seen before, a look of fear, of doubt, of a man who is beginning to realize that he has been walking a path that leads only to destruction, and he takes a step toward you, his hand outstretched, as if he wants to touch you, as if he wants to reach out and pull you back from the edge, but he doesn’t, he just stands there, frozen, as if he is afraid that if he moves, he will shatter, as if he is afraid that if he speaks, he will break something that cannot be fixed.

"Elias," he says, and his voice is breaking, it is cracking, it is falling apart, "I didn't know, I swear to you, I didn't know that they were planning to use you, I didn't know that they were planning to use Margaret, I thought they were just testing you, I thought they were just trying to see if you were strong enough to bear the weight, but they are not testing you, they are killing you, they are killing us, they are killing everyone who cares about you, and I am sorry, I am so sorry, I should have known, I should have seen it, I should have stopped them, but I was afraid, I was afraid of them, I was afraid of the power they hold, I was afraid of what they would do to me if I tried to stop them, and I am ashamed, I am so ashamed that I let my fear stand in the way of what is right, I am so ashamed that I let them take you, I am so ashamed that I let them take Margaret, and now it is too late, it is already too late, and all we can do now is try to save what is left, try to save ourselves, try to save each other, but I don't know if we can, I don't know if we have the strength, I don't know if we have the time, I don't know if we have the will."

The door to the archive room bursts open, and the sound is like a gunshot in the quiet, and the wind rushes in, carrying with it the smell of rain and the sound of boots on stone, and you see them, the men of the Order, their faces hidden behind their masks, their hands gripping their swords, their eyes cold and hard and empty, and they are coming for you, they are coming to take you, they are coming to finish what they started, and you know in that moment that there is no way out, that there is no escape, that there is no salvation, that the only thing you can do is stand, and fight, and die, and hope that your death will mean something, that your death will be enough, that your death will save Margaret, that your death will save the world.

You stand up, and the chair falls behind you, and the sound of it hitting the floor is small, insignificant, lost in the noise of the storm outside, and you reach for the sword at your side, and you draw it, and the blade sings in the air, a high, clear note that cuts through the tension, and you look at Thomas, and you see the tears in his eyes, and you see the regret on his face, and you know that he will try to stop them, that he will try to help you, that he will try to make up for what he has done, and you nod, just once, a small, slow movement that says everything, that says thank you, that says I forgive you, that says I love you, that says goodbye.

They rush in, and the room is filled with the sound of clashing steel, and the air is thick with the smell of blood and iron, and you move, you fight, you strike, and your body moves on its own, guided by instinct, by training, by a rage that has been building for years, and you see their faces in the flashes of light, you see the shock in their eyes, you see the fear in their hands, and you know that they are afraid of you, that they are afraid of what you can do, that they are afraid of the power that lives inside you, the power that they cannot control, the power that they cannot break, the power that will consume them, just as it is consuming you.

Thomas is there, fighting beside you, his sword swinging in wide arcs, his body moving with a grace that you have not seen before, and he is shouting, he is screaming, he is calling out to you, he is trying to tell you something, he is trying to tell you that it is okay, he is trying to tell you that you are free, he is trying to tell you that the seal is broken, that the darkness is gone, that you can let go, that you can put down the sword, that you can put down the burden, that you can finally rest.

You stop, you stand still, you look at him, and you see the truth in his eyes, you see the light, you see the peace, you see the end, and you understand, you finally understand, that the sacrifice was never meant to be your death, that the sacrifice was meant to be your freedom, that the iron ring was not a shackle, but a key, and you realize that you have been holding onto it for so long, holding onto the pain, holding onto the anger, holding onto the fear, that you have forgotten how to let go, that you have forgotten how to live, that you have forgotten how to love.

You look at the ring on your hand, and you see the way the light is changing, you see the way the metal is turning to dust, you see the way it is falling away, and you feel the weight lift from your shoulders, you feel the tension leave your body, you feel the fear leave your heart, and you reach out to Thomas, and he takes your hand, and you feel his warmth, you feel his strength, you feel his love, and you know that you are not alone, that you are not abandoned, that you are not forgotten, that you are loved.

The men of the Order fall, one by one, their swords dropping from their hands, their bodies hitting the floor, and the room is silent, the only sound is the rain outside, the rain that is washing away the blood, the rain that is washing away the fear, the rain that is washing away the past, and you stand there, holding Thomas’s hand, holding the light, holding the peace, and you feel the ring on your hand dissolve completely, leaving no trace, leaving no mark, leaving no pain, and you know that you are free, that you are finally free, that you can go home, that you can see Margaret, that you can live, that you can love, that you can be human again.

You look at Thomas, and you smile, and he smiles back, and the room fills with a light that is not from the candle, that is not from the window, that is from inside, that is from the soul, that is from the heart, and you know that this is what it feels like, to be redeemed, to be saved, to be loved, and you close your eyes, and you let go, and you let the darkness go, and you let the fear go, and you let the pain go, and you let the world go, and you are still, and you are whole, and you are home.
