The Distant Nightmare

The door to the cellar is heavy. You push it. The hinges do not squeak. They sing. A low, mournful note that vibrates in your teeth. You are Margaret. You are the keeper of the gate. You are leaving.

You stand in the corridor. The air is thick with the smell of wet stone and old paper. Your hands are trembling. You look at your palms. They are stained with ink. Not blue ink. Red. It looks like blood, but it is only the residue of the binding. You have bound the thing. You have held it back. For ten years, you have held it back.

Now you must go.

You walk to the window. The glass is cold. Outside, the rain is falling. It is a gray, relentless rain. It washes the streets of this town, a town that does not appear on any map. A town that exists in the fold between seconds. You are not a witch. You are not a sorcerer. You are a witness. You are the mirror.

You turn to the room. There is a chair. In the chair sits Thomas.

He is old. His hair is white. His face is a map of wrinkles, deep and dark. He is looking at you. His eyes are closed. He is sleeping. Or he is dreaming. It is hard to tell. The air around him is still. Too still.

"Thomas," you say. Your voice is quiet. It breaks in the middle.

He does not move.

"Thomas, it is time."

His eyes open. They are blue. The color of ice. The color of nothing. He looks at you. He does not smile. He does not frown. He just looks.

"You are going," he says.

"I am leaving."

"You are going to die."

"I am going to cross."

He nods. Slowly. The movement is like a tree bending in the wind.

"The Council knows," he says.

"I know."

"They are angry."

"I know."

"They think you have stolen the key."

"I have not stolen the key. I have broken it."

Thomas leans forward. The chair creaks. It is the only sound in the room.

"Margaret," he says. "Do you understand what you have done?"

"I understand the price."

"You have burned the bridge."

"I have burned the bridge."

"Then you cannot come back."

"I know."

He reaches out. His hand is dry. It is rough. He touches your cheek. His fingers are cold. They are like stones.

"You are brave," he says.

"I am tired."

"You are free."

"I am alone."

He pulls his hand back. He sits back in the chair. He looks at the wall. The wall is bare. There is no painting. There is no clock. There is only the shadow of the window frame.

"Go," he says.

You turn. You walk to the door. You open it. The corridor is dark. The light from the window is fading. You step out. You close the door. The lock clicks. It is a small sound. It is the loudest sound in the world.

You walk down the stairs. The steps are wet. Your shoes slip. You catch yourself on the railing. The wood is slick. You look down. The cellar is deep. It is a hole in the earth. It is a mouth.

You reach the bottom. The air is colder here. It bites your skin. You see the gate. It is made of iron. It is rusted. It is covered in vines. The vines are black. They pulse. They breathe.

You stop. You look at the gate. You are afraid. You are not afraid of the dark. You are not afraid of the cold. You are afraid of the silence. The silence is heavy. It presses against your ears. It presses against your mind.

You know what is on the other side. You know what is waiting. It is not a monster. It is not a ghost. It is a mistake. It is a wound. It is the part of you that you cut away. The part of you that loved. The part of you that was too much.

You have spent ten years cutting it away. You have spent ten years keeping it in the cellar. You have spent ten years being the guard. You have spent ten years being the wall.

Now you must walk through.

You take a step. The vine twitches. It wraps around your ankle. It is tight. It is cold. You pull your leg back. The vine holds. It does not let go.

"Let go," you say.

It does not.

"Let go."

It tightens.

You look around. There is no one. There is no help. There is only the vine. There is only the gate. There is only you.

You remember Thomas. You remember his hand. You remember his words. You are free. You are alone.

You stop pulling. You stand still. You breathe. You let the vine hold you. You let the cold fill your lungs. You let the fear fill your heart. You do not fight it. You do not hate it. You accept it.

The vine loosens. It slides down your leg. It falls to the ground. It is dead. It is brown. It crumbles to dust.

You walk to the gate. You put your hand on the iron. It is warm. It is alive. You push. The gate does not open. You pull. The gate does not move.

You look at the gate. You see your reflection. It is not your face. It is a face you do not recognize. It is a face full of pain. It is a face full of love. It is a face that is not yours. It is the face of the thing you left behind.

You look away. You do not want to see it. You do not want to be it.

But you are it.

You have always been it.

You raise your hand. You strike the gate. The iron rings. It is a clear, bright sound. It echoes in the cellar. It echoes in your bones.

You strike it again.

You strike it again.

Your hand bleeds. The blood runs down the iron. The blood is red. It is bright. It is warm.

The gate shakes. It vibrates. It is waking up.

You stop. You stand still. You look at your hand. It is a mess. It is ruined. It is perfect.

You know what you must do.

You do not need a key. You do not need a spell. You do not need a word. You need a sacrifice.

You need to give it something.

You need to give it yourself.

You close your eyes. You think of the rain. You think of the town. You think of Thomas. You think of the years. You think of the loneliness. You think of the love you buried.

You open your eyes. You look at the gate. You step forward. You press your face against the iron. The metal is sharp. It cuts your skin. It cuts your nose. It cuts your lips.

You do not pull away. You lean in. You give it your pain. You give it your memory. You give it your name.

The gate is warm. It is soft. It is like skin.

It opens.

There is no door. There is no room. There is only light. It is white. It is pure. It is blinding.

You step through.

The light wraps around you. It is gentle. It is kind. It is like a mother’s hand. It is like a lover’s breath.

You are not alone. You are not afraid. You are not in pain.

You are here.

You are free.

You look back. The cellar is gone. The gate is gone. The vine is gone.

There is only the light.

And you.

And the love.

It is not a nightmare. It is a dream. It is the dream you have been afraid of. It is the dream you have been waiting for.

It is the end.

It is the beginning.

You smile. You do not know why. You do not know who you are. You do not know where you are.

But you know that you are safe.

You know that you are home.

You close your eyes. You let the light take you. You let the silence take you. You let the peace take you.

You are gone.

You are here.

You are everything.

The rain continues to fall. The town sleeps. The cellar is empty. The chair is empty. The door is closed.

Thomas is still there. He is awake. He is looking at the wall. He is smiling.

It is a small smile. It is a sad smile. It is a smile of relief.

He knows. He has always known.

He stands up. He walks to the door. He opens it. He walks into the rain. He does not look back. He does not need to.

The bridge is burned. The gate is open. The key is broken.

The sacrifice is done.

The redemption is real.

He walks into the night. He is alone. He is free. He is tired.

He is home.
