The Distant Legend
The rain hits the window like gravel. You watch it. It is cold. The fluorescent light hums. It is a low, sick note. You are in the office. It is night. The city sleeps outside. You do not sleep.
The file is on the desk. It is thick. It is blue. It smells of ink and old paper. It smells of lies. You touch the spine. The leather is cracked.
You remember the house. You remember the garden. You remember the smell of the roses. They were red. They were deep. They were like blood on snow. She planted them. She said they needed the dark. She said they grew in the shadows.
You were happy then. Or so you thought. Happiness is a fog. It lifts. It reveals the ground. The ground is hard. The ground is wet.
Your phone buzzes. It vibrates on the wood. It is a small, angry sound. You look at the screen. It is a message. It is from the Chief.
“Come in. Now.”
Two words. No warmth. No care. Just command. You know what this means. You know the game. The board is set. The pieces are moved. You are not a player. You are a pawn. You are a stone. You will be swept away.
You stand up. Your knees crack. Your back aches. You are old. You are tired. The years have taken their toll. They have taken your strength. They have taken your fire. They have left you with this. This hollow chest. This empty head.
You walk down the hall. The carpet is red. It is old. It is worn. It looks like dried blood. You walk fast. Your shoes slap. The sound is sharp. It echoes. It bounces off the walls.
The Chief’s office is at the end. The door is closed. It is heavy. It is dark wood. You knock. No answer. You open it. You push. It creaks.
He is there. He is at the desk. He does not look up. He is drinking. The glass is clear. The liquid is amber. It glows in the dark.
“Sit,” he says.
His voice is rough. It is gravel in a tin can. You do not sit. You stand. You look at him. He looks at you. His eyes are cold. They are flat. They are dead.
“You know why you are here,” he says.
“I do,” you say.
“You are wrong.”
“I am not wrong.”
“Sit down.”
You sit. The chair is cold. It is metal. It bites into your legs. You do not move. You do not breathe.
He opens the file. He drops it on the desk. It lands with a thud. It is the same file. The one from your desk. The one with the lies. The one with the truth.
“Read it,” he says.
You do not read. You know it. You have read it a hundred times. You have read it in the dark. You have read it in the light. You have read it in the rain. You have read it in the sun. You know every word. You know every lie.
“It is false,” you say.
“It is true,” he says.
“It is not true.”
“It is enough.”
He stands up. He is tall. He is broad. He is like a wall. He walks to the window. He looks out. The rain is still falling. The street is empty. The lights are on. They are yellow. They are sick.
“We have a problem,” he says.
“We have a corruption,” you say.
“We have a man. He is rich. He is powerful. He is connected. He owns the bank. He owns the land. He owns the city. He is the city.”
“He is a criminal,” you say.
“He is a benefactor,” he says.
“He is a murderer,” you say.
He turns. His face is pale. His mouth is thin. He looks at you with pity. He looks at you with fear.
“Did you kill him?” he asks.
“No,” you say.
“Did you let him die?” he asks.
“No,” you say.
“Then what did you do?”
“Nothing,” you say.
“Nothing is a thing,” he says. “Nothing is a choice. You chose to look away. You chose to stay silent. You chose to let the blood flow. You chose to let the roses die.”
“I did not choose,” you say. “I was afraid.”
“Fear is a lie,” he says. “Fear is a shield. You hid behind it. You hid behind your duty. You hid behind your laws. You hid behind your wife.”
Your name. Her name. It hangs in the air. It is a ghost. It is a blade.
“She knows,” he says.
“No,” you say. “She does not know.”
“She knows everything. She always knows. She sees the shadows. She sees the cracks. She sees the rot. She is the root. She is the poison. She is the death.”
“You are wrong about her,” you say.
“Am I?” he asks. “Or are you? You love her. You love her too much. You love her like a sickness. You love her like a fever. You cannot let go. You cannot let her go. You cannot let the truth go. So you burn. You burn for her. You burn for the lie.”
The room spins. The light flickers. The hum grows louder. It is in your teeth. It is in your bones.
“Give me the file,” you say.
“No,” he says.
“You will give it to me.”
“I will fire you. I will ruin you. I will break you. I will make you disappear. I will make you a ghost. I will make you nothing.”
“I do not care,” you say.
“Everyone cares,” he says. “You care. You care about her. You care about the house. You care about the garden. You care about the roses. You care about the past. You are chained to the past. You are buried in the past. You are dead. You have been dead for years. You just do not know it yet.”
You look at him. You look at his face. You see the fear. You see the guilt. You see the lie. He is not the monster. He is the victim. He is the slave. He is the one who is afraid.
“I will not give it to you,” you say.
“Then I will take it,” he says.
He reaches for the file. His hand is fast. His hand is strong. You see it move. You see it come. You do not move. You do not flinch. You let him take it.
He grabs it. He pulls it to him. He holds it tight. He looks at you. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a sad smile.
“Goodbye,” he says.
“Goodbye,” you say.
He walks out. The door closes. The latch clicks. The sound is final. The sound is absolute.
You are alone. The room is empty. The air is still. The rain continues. It hits the glass. It is a drum. It is a heartbeat. It is the end.
You stand up. Your legs are weak. Your head is heavy. You walk to the window. You look out. The street is dark. The lights are out. The city is sleeping. The city is dreaming.
You think of the garden. You think of the roses. They are dead. The rain has killed them. The cold has killed them. The darkness has killed them.
You think of her. You think of her face. You think of her hands. You think of her voice. You think of her love. It was a fire. It was a storm. It was a curse. It was a gift.
You did not kill him. You did not let him die. You did nothing. You are the nothing. You are the empty space. You are the silence.
But silence is not peace. Silence is a scream. Silence is a war.
You close your eyes. You feel the cold. You feel the dark. You feel the end.
You open your eyes. You look at the desk. The file is gone. The desk is empty. The wood is bare. The light is on. The hum is loud.
You pick up your coat. It is heavy. It is wet. You put it on. You button it. You tie it. You close it.
You walk to the door. You open it. You step out. The hallway is long. The carpet is red. The air is cold. The air is wet.
You walk fast. Your shoes slap. The sound is sharp. The sound is loud. The sound is yours.
You reach the exit. The door is open. The night is there. The rain is there. The city is there.
You step out. You step into the rain. The water hits your face. It is cold. It is clean. It is real.
You walk. You walk down the street. You walk past the shops. You walk past the bars. You walk past the homes. You walk into the dark.
You do not go home. You do not go to her. You do not go to the garden. You do not go to the past.
You walk. You walk into the night. You walk into the unknown. You walk into the rain.
You are free. You are lost. You are alone. You are alive.
The rain falls. The rain washes. The rain cleans. The rain kills. The rain lives.
You are the rain. You are the storm. You are the silence. You are the scream.
You walk. You walk on. The city sleeps. The city dreams. You are awake. You are here. You are now.
The end is not a wall. The end is a door. You walk through it. You do not look back. You do not look forward. You look only at the next step. The next breath. The next drop of rain.
You are small. You are big. You are nothing. You are everything.
The rain continues. It will not stop. It will not end. It will only fall.
