The Last Dispatch

The mud of the Somme was not just earth; it was a graveyard that refused to stay closed. Private Thomas, barely nineteen, clutched the dispatch folder to his chest, his knuckles white. The world had shrunk to the width of a trench and the sound of whistling shells.

His mission was simple: cross the No Man's Land and deliver the ceasefire agreement to the 4th Battalion. If he failed, another thousand men would die in a futile charge at dawn.

He had been guided through the ruins of a shattered village by a man they called "The Ghost." The Ghost was a soldier from a different war, or perhaps just a different version of madness. He had survived in the craters for three years, eating rats and talking to the dead. He knew the hidden paths through the wire, the places where the machine guns couldn't reach.

"Stay low, Tommy," the Ghost whispered, his voice a rattling cough. "The earth is the only thing that doesn't lie to you here."

They crawled through the sludge, the air thick with the smell of cordite and decaying flesh. Thomas felt a terror that was almost religious, a crushing weight that made every inch of progress feel like a mile. He thought of his mother's kitchen, the smell of fresh bread, the sound of the church bells in his village. Those memories felt like they belonged to another man, in another lifetime.

As they approached the 4th Battalion's perimeter, the Ghost stopped. He looked at Thomas with a sudden, piercing clarity.

"You're a good lad, Tommy. Too good for this hole."

A sudden flare lit up the sky, turning the world into a stark, blinding white. In that moment of exposure, the Ghost pushed Thomas forward, shouting for him to run. A burst of machine-gun fire ripped through the air. The Ghost collapsed, his body jerking once before falling still in the mud.

Thomas didn't look back. He sprinted the final fifty yards, the wind whistling in his ears, the world a blur of grey and red. He reached the command bunker, slammed the dispatch onto the table, and gasped out the words: "Ceasefire. Now."

The officers looked at him, then at the documents. The order was confirmed. The guns fell silent.

Thomas walked back to the edge of the trench and looked out over the field. The sun was beginning to rise, a pale, sickly yellow light filtering through the smoke. He found the spot where the Ghost had fallen.

He knelt in the mud and closed the man's eyes. He felt a strange, hollow victory. He had saved a thousand lives, but he had lost the only person who had truly seen him in this wasteland.

A sudden, sharp pain flared in his side. He looked down to see a small, jagged piece of shrapnel embedded in his ribs—a parting gift from the final barrage. He tried to breathe, but the air felt like broken glass.

He lay back in the mud, watching the first rays of light hit the horizon. He wasn't afraid. For the first time in months, the world was quiet. He closed his eyes and imagined the church bells of his village, ringing not for a funeral, but for a homecoming.
