The Pale Mist

You are in the break room. The coffee is burnt. It tastes like ash and old pennies. You sit at the edge of the table. Your hands are shaking. You press them flat against the laminate. They will not stop.

The door opens. Edward Ashworth walks in. He is wearing his gray suit. It is clean. It is perfect. He does not look at you. He goes to the machine. He pours his cup. He sips. He is calm. You are not.

"You look tired, Thomas," he says. His voice is low. It is soft. It is kind.

"I am fine," you say. Your voice cracks. You hate it. You hate the sound of it.

Edward sets his cup down. He looks at you. His eyes are pale. They are empty. He smiles. It is a small smile. It does not reach his eyes.

"You have been working hard," he says. "We appreciate your dedication."

You nod. You want to scream. You want to throw the cup at his face. You do not move. You are a stone. You are a wall. You are the thing that holds the door shut.

The room is cold. The air conditioning hums. It sounds like a bee dying. You watch his hands. They are steady. They are strong. You look at your own hands. They are trembling. They are weak.

He turns to leave. He pauses. He looks back.

"Do not forget the report, Thomas. By four."

Then he is gone. The door clicks shut. The sound is final. The sound is a period at the end of a sentence.

You are alone. You look at your hands. You see the veins. They are blue. They are pulsing. You think about the letter. It is in your drawer. It is sealed. It has your name on it. It has the company logo. It is red. It is bright.

You do not open it. You do not need to. You know what it says. You have read it in your dreams. You have read it in the silence of your office. You have read it in the eyes of the other employees. They look at you and they see a ghost. They see a mistake. They see a flaw.

You are the flaw. You are the crack in the foundation.

You stand up. Your knees pop. You walk to the mirror. The glass is dull. It is smudged. You see your face. It is gray. It is tired. Your hair is thinning. Your eyes are sunk into their sockets. You look older. You look like a man who has been eating dust.

You touch your face. Your skin is cold. It is dry. You feel the hollows of your cheekbones. You feel the tension in your jaw. You are a machine that is breaking down. You are a part that has worn out.

You go to your office. The door is closed. You push it open. The air is stale. The light is yellow. It comes from the window. It is late afternoon. The sun is going down. It is dying.

You sit at your desk. The wood is scratched. The metal is cold. You open the drawer. The letter is there. It is white. It is smooth. It is silent.

You do not pick it up. You look at it. You imagine what it says. You imagine the words. They are sharp. They are cold. They cut you. You feel the pain before you read it. You feel the betrayal. You feel the shame.

You are a sinner. You are a thief. You stole something. You stole trust. You stole confidence. You stole the peace of mind of the people who worked with you. You were too ambitious. You were too loud. You were too much.

You close the drawer. You stand up. You walk to the window. You look out. The city is gray. The cars are moving. The people are moving. They are alive. They are happy. They do not know about you. They do not care about you. You are invisible.

You are a ghost in a machine. You are a shadow in a light.

You think about Edward. You think about his smile. You think about his voice. You remember the day you met him. You were young. You were eager. You were full of hope. You thought you could change things. You thought you could make a difference.

You were wrong.

You were always wrong.

You walk back to your desk. You open the drawer again. You pick up the letter. Your hands are shaking. The paper is thin. It tears easily. You are afraid to open it. You are afraid of the truth.

But you are not afraid of the lie. You have lived with the lie for years. You have built your life on the lie. You have built your identity on the lie.

You tear the seal. You open the envelope. You pull out the paper. You read the first line.

"Dear Thomas,"

Your heart stops. It is a stop. It is a silence. It is a void.

You read the second line.

"Following our recent conversation..."

You stop. You do not read further. You do not need to. You know. You know what it says. It says you are fired. It says you are replaced. It says you are done.

You drop the letter. It falls to the floor. It lies there. It is white. It is clean. It is nothing.

You sit down. You put your head in your hands. You do not cry. You do not shout. You just sit. You breathe. You breathe in. You breathe out.

The room is dark. The light is fading. The sun is gone. The city is waking up. The lights are turning on. The world is moving on.

You are staying.

You are staying still.

You think about your hands. You look at them. They are steady now. The shaking has stopped. They are strong. They are solid.

You realize something. You realize that you have been afraid of the wrong thing. You have been afraid of losing your job. You have been afraid of losing your status. You have been afraid of losing your place.

But you do not care. You do not care about the job. You do not care about the money. You do not care about the respect.

You care about the truth.

And the truth is this: you are not a sinner. You are not a thief. You are not a mistake.

You are a man.

And men make mistakes. And men are fired. And men are replaced. And men are forgotten.

But you are not forgotten. You are here. You are in this room. You are in this body. You are in this moment.

You stand up. You pick up the letter. You fold it. You put it in the trash. You do not look back.

You walk to the door. You open it. The hallway is empty. The lights are fluorescent. They buzz. They flicker.

You walk to the elevator. You press the button. The doors open. You step in. The doors close.

You go down. You go down to the lobby. You walk out the glass doors. The air is cold. It is crisp. It is real.

You walk down the street. The people are walking. The cars are driving. The city is loud. The city is alive.

You stop. You stand in the middle of the sidewalk. You close your eyes. You breathe. You feel the wind on your face. You feel the cold on your skin.

You open your eyes. You look at the building. It is tall. It is gray. It is indifferent.

You turn away. You walk away. You do not look back.

You are free.

You are free from the lie. You are free from the fear. You are free from the expectation.

You are free.

But it is not a happy freedom. It is a heavy freedom. It is a cold freedom. It is a freedom that costs you everything.

You walk. You keep walking. The street stretches out before you. It is long. It is gray. It is endless.

You are alone. You have always been alone.

But now you are alone in a different way. You are alone with yourself. You are alone with your thoughts. You are alone with your truth.

And the truth is heavy.

You keep walking. You do not stop. You do not rest. You just walk.

The sun is gone. The stars are coming out. The city is sleeping.

But you are awake. You are awake and you are tired. You are awake and you are empty.

You are awake and you are free.

And that is enough.

That is all.

You are Thomas. You are here. You are now.

And that is all that matters.

You keep walking.

The night is deep. The night is dark. The night is yours.

You own it.

You own the silence.

You own the cold.

You own the end.

And you are not afraid.

You are not afraid anymore.

You are just walking.

You are just being.

You are just alive.

And that is enough.

That is all.

The end is not a tragedy.

It is a release.

It is a breath.

It is a pause.

It is a silence.

And in that silence, you find your peace.

You find your soul.

You find yourself.

You are you.

And you are enough.

You keep walking.

The street is long.

The night is deep.

You are alone.

But you are not lonely.

You are full.

You are whole.

You are complete.

And you are free.

You are free.

You are free.

You are free.
