The Pale Shadows

The road ends where the fog begins.

You stand at the edge. The mist is thick. It tastes of iron. It tastes of old blood. Your feet are bare. The stone is cold. You hold the lantern. The glass is cracked. The light is weak.

Behind you, the carriage waits. The horses stamp. They smell the wet earth. They smell the fear. You do not look back. You cannot look back. If you look back, you will stay. If you stay, they will take you.

You step forward.

The first shadow moves. It is not a person. It is a shape. It is the shape of the wall. It is the shape of the law. It wears a face. The face is smooth. The face is white.

"You halt," says the voice.

It is a low voice. It is a kind voice. Kindness is a trap.

"I walk," you say.

Your voice is steady. Your hands are steady. The lantern shakes. You do not see it.

The figure steps closer. It is tall. It wears grey. The grey blends with the fog. The grey is the color of the river in winter. The grey is the color of the dead.

"You have no right here," says the figure.

"The road is open," you say.

"The road is mine. The town is mine. The fog is mine."

The words hang in the air. They do not rise. They sink. They sink into the mud. They sink into your bones.

You know this man. You have seen him in the town square. You have seen him on the hill. He is the Mayor. He is the Judge. He is the Father.

You remember the house. You remember the cellar. You remember the smell of the damp. You remember the sound of the chains. You remember the look in your brother’s eyes.

Your brother is not here. Your brother is in the ground. Your brother is in the fog.

"Go back," says the Mayor.

"I do not go back."

"Why?"

"Because I am free."

The Mayor laughs. The laugh is dry. The laugh is like leaves scraping stone.

"Free," he says. "A strange word. A heavy word. It weighs more than a crown. It weighs more than a soul."

He steps closer. The fog parts around him. It clings to his coat. It clings to his hair.

"You think freedom is a door," he says. "It is not. Freedom is a key. And you do not have the key."

You tighten your grip on the lantern. The glass cracks further. A shard falls. It hits the stone. It makes a small sound. A tiny sound.

"I have the key," you say.

The Mayor stops. He looks at you. His eyes are dark. His eyes are deep. They are the eyes of a well.

"Show me," he says.

You lift the lantern. The light flares. The light is blue. The light is cold. It cuts the fog. It cuts the shadow.

The Mayor flinches. He covers his eyes. He turns his face away.

"Turn it off," he says.

"No."

"Turn it off, or I will take it. I will take you. I will take your breath."

The threat hangs there. It is heavy. It is solid.

You look at him. You see the fear. You see the old fear. It is the fear of the unknown. It is the fear of the light.

He is afraid of you.

This is the first turn.

He is not the master. You are the master.

He steps back. He touches his face. He touches the place where the light touched.

"It burns," he whispers.

"Yes," you say. "It burns."

He reaches out. His hand is long. His fingers are pale. He tries to grab the lantern.

You pull it away. The glass shatters. The light dies.

Darkness returns.

The fog rushes in. It fills the space. It fills the silence.

"Stupid," he says.

His voice is angry. His voice is small.

"You have blinded yourself," he says. "You have blinded us all."

You stand in the dark. You feel the cold. You feel the wet. You feel the ground.

"I see," you say.

"What do you see?"

"I see the truth."

The Mayor steps forward. He is in the dark now. He is no different from you. He is no better than you.

"Truth is a lie," he says. "Truth is a weapon. And you have no shield."

He grabs your arm. His grip is tight. His grip is iron.

He pulls you. He pulls you into the fog.

You do not fight. You let him pull you.

This is the second turn.

You do not resist. You accept the pain. You accept the weight.

He drags you through the mist. The ground is uneven. You stumble. You fall.

He drags you on.

He drags you to the edge of the cliff.

The wind howls. The wind is loud. The wind is angry.

He stops. He stands over you.

"Look," he says.

You look.

Below, the river churns. The water is black. The water is fast. The water is hungry.

"Jump," he says.

"Why?"

"Because freedom is falling. Freedom is losing control. Freedom is death."

You look at him. You see his face. It is twisted. It is cruel. It is broken.

He is not evil. He is terrified.

He holds the power. He holds the law. He holds the town. But he holds nothing else.

He is a ghost.

You are alive.

"I will not jump," you say.

"Then I will push you."

He lifts his leg. He lifts his foot.

You do not move. You do not close your eyes.

You look at him. You look into his eyes.

You see the shadow in his eyes.

It is your shadow.

It is your brother’s shadow.

It is the shadow of the town.

It is the shadow of the law.

It is the shadow of the fear.

You are the mirror.

He sees himself.

He sees the monster.

He sees the man who killed your brother.

He sees the man who built the walls.

He sees the man who wears the grey.

He freezes.

His foot hovers. His foot does not fall.

His breath comes in short gasps. His breath is ragged.

"You are me," you say.

His face crumbles. His face falls apart.

The hand that held the lantern falls to his side. The hand that held the power falls to his side.

He drops to his knees.

He drops into the mud.

He is small. He is weak. He is human.

He looks at you. He looks with pity. He looks with shame.

"I cannot stop it," he says.

"What cannot you stop?"

"The fog. The fear. The end."

He coughs. He spits blood. The blood is red. The blood is bright.

It stands out against the grey. It stands out against the dark.

You stand up. You offer him a hand.

He does not take it.

He looks at the river. He looks at the dark.

"I am tired," he says.

"Rest," you say.

"No."

He stands. He stands slowly. He stands with pain.

He steps to the edge.

He steps out.

He does not jump. He steps out.

He steps into the void.

The fog swallows him.

The wind howls.

You are alone.

You stand at the edge. The road is behind you. The town is behind you. The law is behind you.

You are free.

You look at the fog. The fog is thick. The fog is cold.

You realize the truth.

Freedom is not the absence of chains.

Freedom is the presence of choice.

You chose to stay.

You chose to see.

You chose to let him go.

The price is high. The price is everything.

You are alone. You are empty. You are full.

You turn around.

The road is gone.

The fog is everywhere.

You walk.

You walk into the mist.

You walk into the dark.

You walk into the night.

The lantern is broken. The light is gone.

But you can see.

You can see in the dark.

You can see the path.

You can see the end.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.

The end is not a wall.

The end is a door.

You open it.

You step through.

The fog lifts.

The sun rises.

The sun is pale. The sun is cold.

But it is real.

You stand in the light.

You are free.

You are alone.

You are alive.

The story ends.

The shadow fades.

The light remains.

You are the light.

You are the shadow.

You are the truth.

You are the end.

You are the beginning.

You are the silence.

You are the sound.

You are the breath.

You are the life.

You are the death.

You are the freedom.

You are the cost.

You are the price.

You are the soul.

You are the self.

You are the one.

You are the many.

You are the nothing.

You are the everything.

You are here.

You are now.

You are.
