The Pale Shadows
The moth strikes the glass. It is dead.
You watch it. The wings are grey. The dust is thick. You do not blink. You count the beats of your heart. One. Two. Three.
The tower is cold. The stone is wet. Rain slicks the masonry. It smells of rot and iron. You are the Inquisitor. You are the eye. You are the hand.
"Look," says Father Thomas. His voice is a rasp. He points to the body. "See the mark."
You do not look. You know the mark. You have drawn it a thousand times. You have measured the depth. You have weighed the soul. It is a geometric impossibility. A circle inside a square. A square inside a void.
"Is it her?" you ask. Your voice is flat. It is a blade.
Thomas nods. His face is pale. The candlelight catches his tears. "Elara. Yes. It is Elara."
You feel a spike in your chest. It is not pain. It is recognition. You know this geometry. You have built it. You have bled for it.
"Bring the lamp," you say.
Thomas moves. He is old. His joints crack like dry wood. He brings the oil. The flame is blue. It burns cold. It burns true.
You lean in. The face is still. The eyes are open. They are wide. They are white.
"Open the book," you command.
Thomas hesitates. He looks at you. His gaze is heavy. It is filled with doubt. It is filled with fear.
"Open it," you say again.
He turns the page. The leather creaks. The ink is fresh. It glistens.
You read. The words are simple. They are sharp.
*The seeker finds the truth. The truth finds the seeker. The seeker is the truth.*
You stop. You close the book. The sound is a snap. It echoes in the stone room.
"You wrote this," Thomas says. It is not a question.
"Yes."
"Why?"
You do not answer. You look at the moth. It is still on the glass. It is part of you. It is your shadow. It is your fate.
"Because I had to know," you say. "I had to see."
Thomas steps forward. He blocks your view. He is small. He is frail. But he is a wall.
"You have seen too much," he says. "The bird is dead. The light is gone. Leave it."
"I cannot leave it," you say. "It is mine. I made it. I am responsible."
"Responsibility is a chain," Thomas whispers. "Break it."
You look at Elara. Her skin is like marble. Her lips are purple. She is beautiful. She is terrible. She is the answer to a question you no longer remember asking.
"I loved her," you say. The words are heavy. They are stones in your mouth. "I loved the idea of her. I loved the hunt for her. I loved the pain of not knowing. It was the only thing that kept me alive."
Thomas shakes his head. "That is not love. That is hunger. That is madness."
"Is there a difference?" you ask. Your voice is low. It is dangerous. "In the dark? In the cold? When the world is a lie?"
"The world is what it is," Thomas says. "It does not care for your geometry. It does not care for your obsession. It only takes."
You look at the moth again. It has fallen. It lies on the sill. The wind lifts its wings. They flutter. They are weak. They are trying to rise.
"It wants to fly," you say.
"It is dead," Thomas says.
"No," you say. "It is becoming. It is changing. It is ascending."
Thomas laughs. It is a dry sound. It is cruel. "You are a fool. You have always been a fool. You built this tower to trap the light. You built the cage to hold the soul. And now you are alone. And the soul is gone."
You stand up. Your knees ache. Your back is stiff. You are old. You are tired. But you are not done.
"Give me the key," you say.
"No."
"Thomas."
"Never."
You reach for him. Your hand is quick. It is precise. You grab his wrist. You twist. The bone pops. He screams. It is a high, thin sound. It is the sound of a bird caught in a snare.
You take the key. It is cold iron. It is heavy. It fits in your palm. It fits in your life.
"Forgive me," you say. You do not mean it. You cannot mean it. The words are tools. You use them. You throw them away.
You walk to the door. The stone is wet. The air is thin. You smell the storm. It is close. It is coming.
You unlock the door. The mechanism groans. It resists. It fights. But it yields. It always yields.
You step out. The rain hits your face. It is cold. It is clean. It washes the dust from your skin. It washes the blood from your hands.
You look up. The sky is black. The clouds are torn. Lightning splits the dark. It is white. It is blinding.
You see the tower. It stands tall. It stands proud. It is a needle. It is a spike. It pierces the heavens.
And on the highest point, there is a light. It is small. It is faint. It is blue.
It is the moth.
It is flying.
It is rising.
You understand. You know. You see.
You made the cage. You made the key. You made the trap. And you made the escape. You made the death. And you made the life. You are the architect of your own ruin. You are the judge of your own crime.
You are the moth.
You are the glass.
You are the storm.
You turn back. You face the tower. You face the door. You face the truth.
You pick up the key. You look at it. It is just metal. It is just iron. It has no power. It has no meaning.
You throw it. You throw it into the rain. It disappears. It is gone.
You are free.
You are trapped.
You are both.
You walk into the night. The rain is heavy. It soaks your clothes. It chills your bones. You do not care. You do not feel. You are empty. You are full.
You are the seeker. You have found the truth. The truth is this: there is no truth. There is only the search. There is only the pain. There is only the flight.
You keep walking. The city is behind you. The tower is behind you. The dead are behind you.
You are alone.
You are with the storm.
You are with the light.
You are with the shadow.
You are with the moth.
It flies.
It falls.
It flies.
It is gone.
You close your eyes. You breathe. The air is sweet. It is bitter. It is the taste of memory. It is the taste of loss.
You open your eyes. The rain stops. The clouds part. The moon rises. It is full. It is white. It is cold.
It shines on the water. It shines on the street. It shines on you.
You are a shadow. You are a pale thing. You are a ghost.
You smile. It is a small smile. It is sad. It is bright.
You know the end. You have always known the end. The end is not death. The end is release. The end is the break in the glass. The end is the wing in the wind.
You lift your head. You look at the moon. You look at the sky.
You are ready.
You are ready to fly.
You are ready to die.
You are ready to live.
You step forward. The ground is soft. The air is still.
You are free.
