The Golden Ritual

The roof collapsed at dawn.

It came down in a groan of splintered oak and wet plaster. The dust tasted of ancient rot. I stood in the hall. My heart hammered. A single beam remained. It hung above the parlor. It was golden. It was the only thing left standing.

My name is Arthur. I work for the estate. I am the caretaker. I am the shadow in the corner. I am the one who dusts the shelves. I am the one who feeds the cats. I am the one who is not supposed to be seen.

The house is old. It is a beast of stone and wood. It has eaten three generations of the Pemberton family. It eats my youth, too. I do not mind. I am invisible. That is my gift. That is my curse.

The fire had started in the attic. No one knows how. The servants are gone. They fled when the smoke rose. I stayed. I stayed because I am bound. I am bound to the house. I am bound to the gold.

The golden beam. It is not wood. It is metal. It is light. It hums. It vibrates in the air. It pulls at my bones. I have seen it for ten years. I have never touched it. I have never spoken of it. It is the eye of the house. It watches. It waits.

A figure emerges from the smoke. It is Eleanor. She is the mistress of the house. She is beautiful. She is terrified. Her dress is torn. Her face is soot-stained. She looks at the beam. She looks at me.

"You saw it," she says. Her voice is a whisper. It is thin. It is broken.

"I saw nothing," I say. My voice is steady. My voice is calm. I am a stone in the stream. I do not move.

"It was the beam," she says. "It burned. It was the first thing to burn."

"It was the last thing to stand," I correct her. My words are sharp. My words are kind.

She steps closer. The air between us is thick. It is heavy. It is sweet. I smell her perfume. It is lilies. It is decay. She reaches out. Her hand trembles. She touches my arm. Her skin is cold.

"Arthur," she says. "What is that?"

"I do not know."

"It sings."

"It is silent."

She laughs. It is a dry sound. It is a crack in the wall. "You are a liar, Arthur."

"I am a servant."

"No. You are a keeper."

I pull away. I step back. The distance is a chasm. I cannot cross it. She is the light. I am the dark. She is the fire. I am the ash.

The house groans again. The floor shifts. Dust falls like snow. The golden beam shines brighter. It is growing. It is spreading. It is becoming a sun.

"Eleanor," I say. "You must go."

"Where?"

"Out. Into the air. Into the rain."

"I cannot leave."

"Why?"

"Because it is mine."

"It is the house."

"It is my heritage."

"It is your prison."

She looks at me. Her eyes are wide. They are full of fear. They are full of hope. "You want it," she says. "You have always wanted it."

"I want nothing."

"You want to be free."

"I am free. I am alone. I am free."

The beam pulses. The light fills the room. It is blinding. It is painful. It is beautiful. I close my eyes. I feel the heat. It is on my face. It is in my chest. It is in my blood.

"Look at it, Arthur," she says. "Do not look away."

I open my eyes. The beam is a pillar of fire. It rises to the ceiling. It burns the smoke away. It burns the dust away. It burns the fear away.

It is not wood. It is not metal. It is memory. It is the past. It is the pain of the family. It is the guilt of the father. It is the shame of the mother. It is the anger of the son. It is all of them. It is one.

I see my father. He stands in the light. He is young. He is strong. He holds a hammer. He strikes the beam. He is angry. He is hurt. He is broken.

I see myself. I am a child. I watch him. I am silent. I am still. I am invisible.

The vision fades. The light dims. The beam returns to wood. It is charred. It is black. It is still standing.

Eleanor gasps. She falls to her knees. She weeps. Her sobs are quiet. They are deep. They come from the core of her being.

"It was him," she says. "It was my father."

"It was everyone," I say.

"He killed the house."

"He killed the truth."

I look at the beam. It is dark. It is dead. It is heavy. It is a burden. It is a weight. It is a chain.

"I can take it," I say.

She looks up. Her face is wet. Her eyes are clear. "What?"

"I can take it. I can carry it."

"Why?"

"Because I am strong."

"You are weak."

"I am steady."

She stands. She moves to the beam. She touches it. Her hand shivers. She pulls it. It does not move. It is rooted. It is fixed. It is part of the earth.

"I cannot," she says. "I am too heavy."

"You are too light," I say. "You are empty."

She turns to me. She sees me. She really sees me. For the first time, she sees the man. She sees the ghost. She sees the shadow.

"Arthur," she says. "Help me."

I step forward. I take her hand. I pull her. We pull together. The beam creaks. It groans. It resists. It fights. It holds on.

The house shakes. The walls crack. The floor splits. We are falling. We are rising. We are one.

The beam snaps.

It falls. It crashes to the ground. It lands with a thud. It is a log. It is dead wood. It is black. It is cold.

The light is gone. The fire is out. The smoke clears. The air is cold. The air is fresh. The air is new.

Eleanor collapses. I catch her. I hold her. She is light. She is small. She is warm.

"Thank you," she whispers.

"For what?"

"For letting me go."

I look at the beam. It is just wood. It is just debris. It is just a thing. It is no longer golden. It is no longer magical. It is no longer sacred.

It is free.

I am free.

I stand. I lift her. I carry her out. The door is open. The rain is falling. The rain is cold. The rain is clean.

We walk. The house stands behind us. It is ruined. It is empty. It is silent.

We do not look back.

We do not speak.

We walk into the rain.

The rain washes the soot from my face. The rain washes the fear from my heart. The rain washes the memory from my mind.

I am Arthur. I am the caretaker. I am the shadow. I am the light.

I am free.

The beam remains in the rubble. It is black. It is broken. It is a seed.

One day, it will grow. One day, it will shine. One day, it will burn.

But not today.

Today, it is wood.

Today, it is quiet.

Today, it is done.

I hold Eleanor. She holds me. We are two. We are one. We are alive.

The rain falls. The world turns. The day begins.

I am here. I am now. I am enough.

The house is gone. The gold is gone. The ritual is over.

I am the man who let it go.

I am the man who saved us.

I am the man who is free.
