The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the dirt slicker.

I stood in the parking lot of a warehouse in Santa Monica, rain dripping off the brim of my hat, a loaded gun in my pocket, and a photograph of a man I was supposed to kill.

The package Maloney gave me contained two things: a .38 Special with a full magazine, and a photograph. The photograph showed Arthur Vane, a reporter who had been writing about Maloney's empire for six months. Articles about money laundering, about bribed cops, about the way Frank "The Duke" Maloney built his criminal kingdom brick by bloody brick.

My phone rang. Maloney's voice, calm as a Sunday morning: "You know what to do, Jack."

I did know. I had been trained for this since I was sixteen, when Maloney picked me off the street and decided I was worth more alive than dead. He taught me to shoot, to drive, to lie, to disappear. He called it mentoring. I called it being forged into a tool.

But I was twenty now, and tools start developing opinions.

I did not go to the warehouse. I went to a diner on Sunset Boulevard, the kind of place with red vinyl booths and coffee that tastes like burnt regret, and I waited for Arthur Vane to show up.

He did. He sat across from me, looked at the gun on the table, and did not flinch.

"You're either very brave or very stupid," he said.

"Both," I said. "Which is why you should listen to me."

I told him everything. About Maloney. About the package. About the photograph. About the way Maloney used people like chess pieces and then discarded them when they served no purpose.

Arthur listened without speaking, and when I finished, he said: "Maloney's own son is working with the feds. They're taking him down from the inside. You're not just a tool, Donovan. You're a pawn. And pawns get sacrificed."

I looked at my hands. They were steady. They had always been steady. That was the problem. A steady hand is useful for holding a gun. It is not useful for holding anything else.

Mona Cross found me that night. She was Maloney's secretary, twenty-four, beautiful in the way that women who survive by being beautiful become beautiful—calculated, guarded, with something dead behind the eyes that no amount of lipstick could cover.

"She knows," I said.

"Maloney? Yeah. She knows you didn't make the drop. She's scared, Jack. If you don't do what he says, he comes for both of us."

"I'm tired of doing what he says."

Mona touched my hand. Her fingers were cold. "Then run."

"I don't know how."

"You do. You've been running your whole life. You just never noticed because Maloney was always behind you, pushing."

She was right. Of course she was right. Mona always saw things clearly. That was her gift and her curse.

Maloney's son found me two days later. He was everything Maloney was not—young, clean-cut, intelligent, and just as cruel, but in a way that wore a suit and shook your hand before he stabbed you.

"Here's the deal, Donovan," he said, sitting in a car that cost more than my annual existence. "You kill your father, you walk away with half a million dollars and a new identity. You don't, and you end up in the Pacific with concrete shoes. Your choice."

"I'm not his son."

"No," the son agreed. "You're his dog. But dogs can be trained to bite."

I went back to Maloney's office that night. It was on the top floor of a building in downtown LA, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city, and on nights like this, when the rain made the neon signs bleed color onto the wet streets, it almost looked beautiful.

Maloney was waiting for me. He sat behind his desk, a glass of whiskey in his hand, and watched me enter with the expression of a man watching a puppet he had stopped caring about.

"You're late," he said.

"I don't take orders anymore."

He smiled. It was not a nice smile. "You think you're a person? You're a dog, Jack. I raised you. I fed you. I taught you everything you know. And now you sit there in your little moral crisis, thinking you have choices."

"I have this." I put the gun on the desk.

"Ah. The gun. Your entire personality."

"I'm not going to kill you."

"Then what? You're going to read me a poem?"

"I'm going to ruin you."

I placed a manila envelope on the desk. Inside it were copies of everything Arthur Vane had been investigating—bank records, phone logs, photographs, witness statements. Evidence enough to put Maloney away for the rest of his life.

The son would get them tomorrow. The feds would get them next week. Maloney would be done.

"You think you can walk away from this?" Maloney said quietly.

"I already did."

I walked out of the office, down the elevator, and into the Los Angeles rain. Behind me, Maloney's whiskey glass clicked against the desk, and I knew—without any doubt at all—that he would not let me go.

Dogs do not walk away from their masters. And masters do not let their dogs walk away.

A month later, Maloney's empire collapsed. Federal raids. Arrests. Headlines. The Duke was done, sent to a prison in San Quentin where they would not care about his money or his name or his connections.

I was not in Los Angeles anymore. I never told Arthur where I went. Some things are better left unknown.

Arthur saw a small notice in a newspaper: a man named J. Donovan arrested in San Francisco for possession of a firearm. No last name. No address. Just a name and a charge and a date.

Arthur did nothing. He did not try to find me. He did not write about it. He knew that some things cannot be saved. Some things can only be witnessed.

In San Francisco, in a cheap room above a laundromat that smelled like wet detergent and regret, I sat on the edge of my bed and looked out the window at the fog rolling in from the bay. I reached into my pocket and found a lighter—Maloney's lighter, engraved with The Duke's Own.

I opened the window and dropped it. It fell through the fog, and for a moment, I imagined it catching the light of a streetlamp below, flashing once, twice, like a neon sign trying to say something before it went dark forever.

Then it hit the sidewalk and shattered.

I closed the window. I sat down. I waited for morning.
