The Distant Threshold

The coat is red.

Not crimson. Not scarlet. A dull, arterial red. Like dried blood on a stone.

You wear it. You have worn it for forty years.

It is wool. Heavy. It smells of dust and lavender.

You are in the palace.

Or what passes for one now.

The halls are long. The floors are marble. Cold.

You walk.

Your shoes click.

Clack.

Clack.

You are the Archivist.

You are old.

Your hands shake.

The coat is tight.

It chafes.

You ignore it.

You must find the ledger.

The ledger is missing.

It was here yesterday.

You checked.

Twice.

It is gone.

Who took it?

The palace is quiet.

Too quiet.

The birds outside sing.

They are mocking.

You turn a corner.

A door is ajar.

Light spills out.

Golden.

Warm.

You hesitate.

Your heart beats fast.

Thump.

Thump.

You push the door.

It creaks.

Inside.

A room.

Small.

Round.

A single chair.

A single table.

And a man.

He sits.

He is young.

Too young.

He looks up.

His eyes are blue.

Bright.

He smiles.

"Thomas," he says.

You freeze.

He knows your name.

You do not know him.

"Who are you?" you ask.

Your voice is rough.

Cracked.

He laughs.

A soft sound.

Like wind.

"I am the thief," he says.

You feel a chill.

It starts at your neck.

It spreads to your bones.

"The ledger," you say.

He tilts his head.

"It is not in the ledger," he says.

"What?"

"The truth."

You stare at him.

He looks at you.

His face is kind.

It is terrifying.

"Why are you here?" you ask.

"I am waiting," he says.

"For what?"

"For you."

You step back.

Your heel hits the wall.

Stone.

Hard.

"You are a ghost," you whisper.

He shakes his head.

"I am flesh."

He stands.

He is tall.

He is thin.

He wears a grey suit.

It fits well.

He walks toward you.

You do not move.

He stops.

One foot away.

He smells of rain.

And iron.

"I have been watching you," he says.

"For how long?"

"Since you came."

You came.

Ten years ago.

You fled.

You left everything.

The city.

The friends.

The life.

You ran.

Why?

You do not remember.

Or you do not want to.

"I have a question," he says.

"Ask it."

"Does the coat fit?"

You touch the collar.

It bites your skin.

"It fits," you lie.

He nods.

"Good."

He reaches into his pocket.

You flinch.

He pulls out a key.

Brass.

Old.

It looks like the key to the archive.

But it is smaller.

Darker.

"I found this," he says.

"Where?"

"In the trash."

Your blood runs cold.

"The trash," you repeat.

"Yes."

You think of the night.

The storm.

The fear.

You threw it away.

You threw the key away.

You threw your past away.

And you forgot.

Or you tried to.

"You kept it," he says.

"I did not know."

"You knew."

His voice is gentle.

But it cuts.

Like a knife.

"You always knew," he says.

You look down.

Your hands.

They are trembling.

You see the coat.

The red wool.

It is stained.

A dark spot.

Near the hem.

You have never seen it before.

Or have you?

You have ignored it.

For forty years.

You have ignored so much.

The pain.

The guilt.

The truth.

"What is the truth?" you ask.

He holds out the key.

"Take it."

You do not move.

"Take it, Thomas."

You reach out.

Your fingers brush his.

Cold.

Dead.

Is he dead?

No.

He is warm.

He is alive.

You take the key.

It is heavy.

It burns.

You look at him.

His smile fades.

His eyes dim.

"You are not real," you say.

"I am," he says.

"Who are you?"

"Your friend."

Your friend.

David.

David Ashworth.

He is dead.

He has been dead for twenty years.

You killed him.

Or did you?

You do not know.

You remember the argument.

The shouting.

The glass breaking.

The fall.

You remember the silence.

And then you ran.

You left him in the street.

Bleeding.

You did not help.

You did not look back.

You ran to the coast.

You changed your name.

You became Thomas.

You became the Archivist.

You buried the past.

Under layers of dust.

Under layers of wool.

Under layers of lies.

"He is gone," you whisper.

"Yes," he says.

"Go."

"Where?"

"Home."

You have no home.

"I have no home," you say.

"You have the coat," he says.

You look at the red wool.

It is your shroud.

It is your armor.

It is your lie.

"He is waiting," he says.

"Who?"

"David."

You close your eyes.

You see him.

Young.

Laughing.

Alive.

And then.

Broken.

Silent.

Gone.

The room fades.

The light dims.

The man is gone.

You are alone.

You are holding the key.

It is real.

It is cold.

You turn.

You walk.

The halls are long.

The floors are marble.

Your shoes click.

Clack.

Clack.

You reach the archive.

The door is locked.

You try the handle.

It is stiff.

You use the key.

It fits.

It turns.

Click.

The door opens.

Darkness.

You step in.

The air is stale.

Dusty.

You feel a presence.

It is cold.

It is heavy.

You walk deeper.

The shelves are tall.

They touch the ceiling.

You see the ledger.

It is there.

On the desk.

It is open.

The pages are yellow.

Fragile.

You read.

Your name is on the first page.

Thomas Whitmore.

Alias.

Culprit.

Crime.

Homicide.

Victim.

David Ashworth.

Date.

Twenty years ago.

Place.

The alley.

The truth.

It is written.

In black ink.

Permanent.

You cannot erase it.

You cannot change it.

You cannot flee.

You look at the coat.

The red stain.

It is not blood.

It is rust.

From the key.

You dropped it.

You dropped it on the wool.

The stain is old.

But it is there.

You are there.

You are the thief.

You stole your own life.

You hid it.

You buried it.

You forgot.

But you could not.

The coat remembers.

The key remembers.

The palace remembers.

You sit down.

On the floor.

The wood is cold.

You hold the key.

You hold the coat.

You breathe.

In.

Out.

The silence is loud.

It roars.

It screams.

It whispers.

I am here, it says.

You are here.

You are not gone.

You are not safe.

You are not free.

You are Thomas.

You are the Archivist.

You are the sinner.

And you are old.

Your time is up.

The light from the window shifts.

The sun is setting.

The shadows grow long.

They stretch.

They reach for you.

You do not run.

You do not hide.

You stay.

You look at the door.

It is open.

The hallway is dark.

But it is empty.

There is no one to catch you.

There is no one to judge you.

There is only you.

And the coat.

And the key.

And the truth.

You stand up.

Your knees crack.

You walk to the door.

You stop.

You look back.

At the ledger.

At the desk.

At the darkness.

You nod.

It is a small movement.

But it is yours.

You turn.

You walk out.

The door closes behind you.

Softly.

A whisper.

A sigh.

You are in the hallway.

The marble is cold under your feet.

You walk.

You do not look back.

You do not run.

You walk.

Step by step.

Clack.

Clack.

Clack.

You reach the exit.

The heavy iron gate.

It is locked.

You look at the key.

In your hand.

It is warm now.

You put it in the lock.

It fits.

It turns.

Click.

The gate opens.

The night is dark.

The stars are out.

They are bright.

They are cold.

You step out.

The air hits your face.

It is sharp.

Clean.

You feel the wind.

It pushes you.

You do not resist.

You walk into the dark.

The city is far away.

The palace is behind you.

The coat is on your back.

It is heavy.

It is red.

It is yours.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.

The path is long.

The road is empty.

No one follows.

No one chases.

You are alone.

But you are not lost.

You know where you are.

You know who you are.

You know what you did.

And you know what you must do.

You must live.

With it.

With the weight.

With the stain.

With the truth.

You walk.

The stars watch.

They do not judge.

They simply are.

You are.

You walk.

The night is deep.

The road is long.

But you are walking.

You are moving.

You are alive.

And that is enough.

For now.

You keep walking.

The red coat flutters.

A ghost of a wing.

A flag of surrender.

A banner of truth.

You do not take it off.

You will not take it off.

It is part of you.

It is your skin.

It is your soul.

You wear it.

You carry it.

You live in it.

And you walk.

Into the dark.

Into the light.

Into yourself.

The end.
