The mist clings to the valley floor like a wet wool blanket, thick and gray and smelling of rotting leaves, and you walk through it with the weight of your father’s silence pressed against your spine, a physical thing, a stone in your chest that grows heavier with every step you take toward the abandoned mill, where the air is so still that the sound of your own breathing seems to echo from the walls of the world, and you are looking for the fox, the golden fox that has been haunting your dreams since the night the shelling stopped and the silence took over, and you do not know why you are looking for it, you do not know why you feel that if you find it, if you catch it, if you hold it in your hands, then the injustice of the last three years will be righted, then the blood on your hands will wash off, then the boy you were will come back, but the fox is not there, it is only the mist, and the mist is changing, shifting, becoming something else, becoming a face, becoming a voice, and you hear it say, you never left, you are still there, in the trench, in the mud, in the dark, and you want to scream, you want to run, but your feet are rooted to the earth, and the earth is soft, and the earth is hungry, and you feel the pull of it, the gentle, irresistible pull, and you begin to sink, and the water rises, and the water is cold, and the water is clear, and you see your father’s face in the water, and he is smiling, and he is holding a golden fox, and he says, it is not a beast, it is a burden, and you have been carrying it for so long, and it is time to put it down, and you feel a tear roll down your cheek, and the tear falls into the water, and it ripples, and the ripples spread, and they touch the fox, and the fox begins to fade, and you realize that you have been looking for the wrong thing, you have been looking for the proof of your innocence, but the proof is not in the fox, the proof is in the letting go, the proof is in the surrender, the proof is in the act of releasing the thing that has been eating you alive from the inside out, and you reach out, not to grab, but to release, and your hand passes through the golden fur, and the fur turns to dust, and the dust floats up into the mist, and the mist dissolves, and the sun breaks through, and the light is blinding, and you blink, and you are standing in a field, a green field, a living field, and there is no mill, there is no water, there is no fox, there is only you, and you are alive, and you are free, and the freedom is terrifying, and the freedom is sweet, and you laugh, and the laugh is loud, and the laugh is ugly, and the laugh is real, and you feel the pain in your chest, the pain that has been there for three years, and you feel it leave, you feel it drain out of you, like blood from a wound, and you fall to your knees, and you cry, and you cry until there are no tears left, and you sit there, in the field, in the light, and you wait, and you wait for the world to change, but the world does not change, the world remains as it is, broken and beautiful and indifferent, and you realize that justice is not a thing that comes, justice is a thing that you do, justice is a thing that you choose, and you choose to live, you choose to breathe, you choose to walk, and you stand up, and you walk, and you walk away from the place where you were buried, and you walk toward the village, where the people are waiting, where the mothers are waiting, where the children are waiting, and you know that you will not be forgiven, you know that the blood is on your hands, but you know that you can live with it, you can carry it, you can make it mean something, and you walk, and the road is long, and the road is hard, but you walk, and you do not look back, and you do not look down, and you look only forward, and the light is with you, and the light is yours, and the light is enough.

You think of your mother, how she used to sing to you in the kitchen, how her voice was like honey, how her hands were always busy, how she made the world seem safe, and you think of the day she died, the day the bombs fell, the day the house fell, the day the world ended, and you think of the boy you were, the boy who believed in heroes, the boy who believed in goodness, the boy who believed that the world was fair, and you think of the man you have become, the man who has seen the worst of humanity, the man who has done the worst of things, the man who is tired, and you think of the fox, the golden fox, and you understand now, the fox was a mirror, the fox was a reflection of your own guilt, your own shame, your own fear, and you have been chasing it because you were afraid to face it, you were afraid to look at yourself, you were afraid to see the monster that lives inside you, but the monster is not a beast, the monster is a part of you, the monster is a part of humanity, the monster is the part of you that survives, the part of you that endures, the part of you that refuses to die, and you are not the monster, you are the one who carries the monster, you are the one who holds the line, you are the one who keeps the darkness at bay, and you are tired, you are so tired, but you are still here, you are still breathing, you are still walking, and that is enough, that is more than enough, that is everything, and you smile, and the smile is small, and the smile is sad, and the smile is true, and you continue to walk, and the sun sets, and the stars come out, and the night is deep, and the night is dark, but you are not afraid, you are not alone, you are part of the world, you are part of the story, you are part of the human condition, and the human condition is hard, and the human condition is painful, and the human condition is beautiful, and you are grateful, you are grateful to be alive, you are grateful to be here, you are grateful to be you, and you walk, and you walk, and you walk, until the road ends, and the road does not end, the road goes on, and you go on, and you go on, and you go on, and you go on.

The wind picks up, and the grass bends, and the grass whispers, and the whisper says, you are free, you are free, you are free, and you feel the words in your bones, you feel the words in your blood, you feel the words in your soul, and you know that it is true, you know that it is real, you know that it is now, and you stop walking, and you stand still, and you close your eyes, and you breathe in, and you breathe out, and you let go, you let go of the past, you let go of the pain, you let go of the guilt, you let go of the fear, and you let go of the fox, and the fox is gone, and the fox is never coming back, and that is fine, that is good, that is right, and you open your eyes, and you see the road ahead, and the road is bright, and the road is clear, and the road is yours, and you start to walk again, and you walk with purpose, and you walk with hope, and you walk with life, and you walk toward the future, and the future is unknown, and the future is uncertain, and the future is scary, but the future is also full of possibility, and you are ready, you are ready for anything, you are ready for everything, and you walk, and you walk, and you walk, and the world turns, and the world changes, and you change with it, and you grow, and you heal, and you live, and you live, and you live.

Your father’s face appears in your mind one last time, not as a ghost, not as a memory, but as a presence, a warm presence, a loving presence, and he says, I am proud of you, and the words are not spoken, the words are felt, and the feeling is like a hand on your shoulder, a gentle hand, a steady hand, and you feel it, and you accept it, and you let it go, and you continue to walk, and the road is long, and the road is hard, but you are strong, and you are brave, and you are free, and you are free, and you are free.

The mist is gone, the light is gone, the dark is here, and the dark is deep, and the dark is quiet, and you are in the dark, and you are alone, and you are afraid, but you are not alone, you are with yourself, you are with your heart, you are with your soul, and that is enough, that is more than enough, that is everything, and you walk, and you walk, and you walk, and the dark lifts, and the light returns, and the world is bright, and the world is beautiful, and the world is yours, and you are yours, and you are free, and you are free, and you are free.
