The Distant Cartograph
The house breathed.
Not metaphorically. It inhaled through the cracked shutters. It exhaled through the warped floorboards. It lived.
Elias sat in the dark. The chair creaked. He ignored it. He had come to map the silence. To chart the empty rooms. To find the ghost. Or so he told himself. The truth was simpler. He was running from the mirror.
He was a detective of sorts. Not of crime. Of absence. He found what was missing in old houses. In old lives. He had done it in Leeds. In Bristol. In a crumbling manor in the Cotswolds. He always found the gap. The hole in the floor. The name scratched out of a ledger. The chair pushed back from the table.
He found the gap. And he left.
This house was different. It was here. In the valley. The air was thick. The moss was green. It felt wrong. It felt right. He didn't know which.
He lit a lamp. The flame flickered.
"Hello," he said.
The house answered. A low hum. A vibration in the teeth.
He walked to the hallway. The floor was wood. Oak. Old. He ran his hand along the banister. The varnish was smooth. It had been polished recently. No one lived here. He was sure. The mail piled on the table. Yellowed. Old.
He looked at the mail.
Letters. No postmarks. No stamps. Just envelopes. White. Blank.
He picked one up. It was warm.
He dropped it.
"Who is here?" he asked.
The lamp went out.
Darkness.
Total.
He stood still. He breathed. In. Out. In. Out.
He struck a match.
The flame caught. He saw the room. He saw the hallway. He saw the door at the end.
The door was open.
It had been closed when he entered.
He walked toward it. His shoes squeaked on the floor. The sound was loud. Too loud.
He opened the door.
It was a bedroom.
Small. Tidy. A bed with white sheets. A window looking out into the black night. A chair by the window.
And a mirror.
On the wall.
Elias stopped.
He looked at the mirror.
He saw himself.
He was tall. He was thin. He had a scar on his chin. He was fifty years old. He looked tired.
He looked at the mirror.
The figure in the glass did not look tired.
The figure smiled.
Elias did not smile.
"Who are you?" Elias whispered.
The figure did not speak. It just smiled. Wider.
Elias stepped back. His heart hammered. He could hear it. A drum in his chest. He looked around the room. There was no one else. Just the mirror. Just the figure.
He turned to leave.
He could not move.
His legs were locked. His arms were heavy. He was stuck. He was in the room. He was in the mirror.
He looked back at the glass.
The figure was gone.
The mirror was empty.
Elias fell to his knees. He gasped. He tried to stand. He could not. The floor was cold. The air was cold.
He waited.
Minutes passed.
Or hours.
Time did not matter.
He stood up. His legs shook. He walked to the door. He opened it. He walked out into the hallway.
The lamp was still lit.
He walked to the front door. He opened it.
He stepped out into the night.
The air was cold. It bit his face. He breathed it in.
He walked down the path. He walked to the road. He walked to the town.
He found a pub.
It was open.
He went inside.
It was empty.
He sat at the bar.
The bartender was a man. He was old. He had a beard. He looked at Elias.
"Drink?" the man asked.
Elias nodded.
The man poured a whiskey.
Elias drank it.
It burned.
It helped.
"I need to leave," Elias said.
The man shrugged. "Where to?"
"Anywhere," Elias said. "Not here."
The man nodded. "It’s a strange place. The house. The valley. People come. They don’t go."
Elias looked at the man. "Who are you?"
"I’m the keeper," the man said. "I keep the door."
"The door to where?"
"To the inside."
Elias felt a chill. "I was in the house."
"Yes."
"I saw my face."
"Yes."
"It wasn’t me."
"It was you."
Elias frowned. "What do you mean?"
"It’s the same," the man said. "You. The house. The mirror. It’s all the same. You are the house. The house is you."
Elias laughed. It was a dry sound. "You’re mad."
"Am I?"
Elias looked at the glass. The whiskey was empty. "I’m a detective. I find things."
"Find what?"
"The truth."
"There is no truth here," the man said. "Only the lie. The lie that you can leave. The lie that you are separate. You are not. You never were. You are the ghost in the machine. You are the breath in the walls. You are the map."
Elias stood up. "I’m leaving."
"You can’t."
"I will."
The man smiled. "Go then."
Elias walked out.
He walked down the road.
He walked to the car.
It was parked there.
He got in.
He turned the key.
The engine started.
He drove.
He drove down the road.
The road ended.
At a wall.
A stone wall.
High. Thick.
He got out of the car.
He looked at the wall.
There was a door.
A small door.
Wooden.
He walked to it.
He knocked.
No one answered.
He pushed it open.
It opened.
He walked through.
He was in the house.
He was in the hallway.
The lamp was lit.
He walked to the bedroom.
The door was open.
He walked in.
The mirror was there.
He looked at it.
He saw himself.
He was not tired.
He was smiling.
He tried to stop smiling.
He could not.
The smile was on his face. It was carved there. It was part of him.
He looked at the mirror.
The figure in the glass raised a hand.
Elias raised his hand.
The figure pointed at the floor.
Elias looked down.
There was a map.
A paper map.
It was old. It was yellowed.
It showed the house.
It showed the rooms.
It showed the corridors.
And it showed him.
A small figure.
In the center.
He picked up the map.
He looked at it.
The lines moved.
The rooms changed.
The corridors shifted.
He was walking.
He was always walking.
He was the map.
He was the territory.
He was the distance.
He was the destination.
He could not stop.
He could not turn back.
He was the cartographer.
He was the charted land.
He was the unknown.
He was the known.
He was the lie.
He was the truth.
He looked at the mirror.
The figure was gone.
The mirror was empty.
Elias was alone.
He was in the house.
The house was him.
He sat on the bed.
He waited.
The house breathed.
He breathed with it.
In.
Out.
In.
Out.
He was not afraid.
He was not angry.
He was not sad.
He was there.
He was always there.
He had never left.
He never would.
The door opened.
Someone entered.
A young man.
He looked at Elias.
"Who are you?" the young man asked.
Elias looked at him.
He saw the fear.
He saw the curiosity.
He saw the need.
The need to find.
The need to map.
The need to know.
Elias smiled.
It was a sad smile.
It was a true smile.
"I’m the house," Elias said.
The young man frowned.
"Go," Elias said. "Find the gap. Find the hole. Find the missing piece. And then you will understand. You will be here. You will be us. You will be the breath. You will be the wall. You will be the map."
The young man looked at him.
He looked at the mirror.
He saw his own face.
He was not tired.
He was smiling.
He did not know why.
He walked out.
He walked down the hallway.
He walked out the front door.
He walked to the road.
He walked to the car.
