The Wistful Silence
You dream of the ink. It is not the black of a raven’s wing or the deep blue of a bruise. It is the grey of wet ash. It stains your fingers, your nails, the white cotton of your nightgown. You wake with your hands slick and cold. The smell is metallic, sharp, like blood in the mouth. You do not look at your hands. You know what they look like. You are the Archivist. You are the keeper of the seal.
The city is old. The stones under your feet are worn smooth by centuries of shuffling feet. The air is thick with fog and the smell of coal. You walk fast. Your breath comes in short, sharp bursts. The cobblestones are slippery. You do not look down. You look at the gate. It is iron. It is rusted. It is locked.
The gatekeeper is waiting. He is a large man. He wears a uniform that is too tight for him. His eyes are small and hard. He does not look up when you arrive.
"Open it," you say.
"No," he says.
"Why?"
"Because it is closed."
"It is not closed. It is locked. There is a difference."
He looks at you then. His face is a mask of indifference. "The order stands. No entry. No exit. The seal is intact."
You lean against the cold iron. The metal bites into your shoulder. You can feel the vibration of the city through the gate. The trams clanging. The bells ringing. The lives being lived on the other side. You are on the inside. Or are you? The fog swirls around your ankles. It is thick as milk.
"I have a right to go," you say.
"Rights are for those who have not broken the law," he says. His voice is flat. Monotone. "You broke the seal."
"I did not break it. I found it broken."
"The seal was found broken. That is all that matters."
You want to scream. You want to throw your body against the bars. But you do not. You stand still. You are tired. So tired. Your bones feel hollow. The ink is still on your hands. You look at them now. The grey stain is under your fingernails. It goes deep. It is part of you.
A shadow moves in the fog. A woman approaches. She is small. She wears a dark coat. She carries a basket. She stops near the gate. She looks at you. She looks at the gatekeeper. She looks at your hands.
"Is she the one?" the woman asks. Her voice is soft. Like dry leaves.
The gatekeeper does not answer. He looks away.
The woman steps closer. She smells of bread and yeast. It is a warm smell. It is the smell of life. You hate it. You want to smell only the ink. Only the cold.
"Who are you?" you ask.
"I am Elise," she says. "I live nearby. I see you every day. You walk here. You wait. You leave."
"I have not left," you say.
"Not yet."
She looks at your hands again. Her eyes are wide. They are the color of the fog. "It is a strange mark," she says. "It looks like a bird."
"It is ink," you say. "It is the seal."
"No," she says. "It is a mark. A brand."
You pull your hands back. You hide them in your pockets. "Do not touch me."
"I would not dream of it." She puts the basket down. It is full of apples. Red apples. They shine in the grey light. "I brought these. For you."
"I do not want them."
"They are for the road. When you leave. You will be hungry."
"I am not leaving."
"You are. I can see it in your eyes. You are ready to drop it."
"Drop what?"
"The guilt. The weight. The ink."
You look at her. She is smiling. It is a small smile. It is sad. "You do not know what you are talking about," you say.
"I know everything. I have seen everything. I have seen you in the dream. I have seen the ink. It is not a stain. It is a memory."
The gatekeeper steps forward. "Remove yourself," he says. "This is a restricted area."
Elise does not move. She looks at him. "You are just a man with a key," she says. "You are not the law. The law is in the book. The book is in the room. And you are standing outside it."
The gatekeeper’s face twitches. He reaches for his belt. "I am the law. I am the wall."
"No," Elise says. "You are the door. And doors can be opened."
She turns to you. "Look at your hands."
You pull them out. The ink is still there. But it is different. It is moving. It is spreading. It is becoming a shape. A bird. A raven. Its wings are outstretched. It is flying.
"It is leaving," you whisper.
"It is going back," Elise says.
The gatekeeper shouts. "Stop this. Stop this nonsense." He pulls a key from his belt. He tries to unlock the gate. But the key will not turn. It is stuck. It is jammed. He pulls harder. He screams. The key snaps.
The fog thickens. The sound of the city fades. The trams stop. The bells stop. The world is silent. Only the sound of your breathing. And the sound of the ink moving.
Elise takes your hand. Her fingers are warm. They touch the grey stain. You flinch. But she does not let go. "It is not pain," she says. "It is release. Let it go."
You close your eyes. You feel the weight in your chest. It is heavy. It has been there for years. It is the weight of the secret. The weight of the lie. You told them it was an accident. You told them the seal broke on its own. But it was not an accident. You broke it. You broke it because you wanted to know what was inside. You wanted to see the truth. And when you saw it, you were afraid. So you locked it away. You locked yourself away. You became the keeper of the broken thing.
The ink flows. It moves from your hands to your arms. It climbs your neck. It covers your face. It is cold. It is clean. It washes away the fear. It washes away the shame.
You open your eyes. The gatekeeper is on the ground. He is crying. He is shaking. He holds the broken key in his hand. It is useless now.
The gate is open. The iron bars have dissolved. They are gone. There is only the fog. And beyond the fog, the city. The sun is rising. It is bright. It is harsh. It hurts your eyes.
Elise is gone. She is gone. The basket of apples is empty. The apples are gone.
You walk out. Your feet are bare. The cobblestones are cold. But you do not care. You walk into the light. You walk into the world.
You are free. You are light. You are empty.
But as you walk, you feel a pull. A tug. It is in your chest. It is the shape of the bird. It is the shape of the ink. It is not gone. It is inside you. It is part of you. You cannot wash it away. You cannot hide it. You carry it. You carry the memory. You carry the truth.
You walk to the edge of the city. The river is there. It is wide. It is grey. It mirrors the sky. You stop at the edge. You look down. You see your reflection. Your hands are clean. They are white. They are normal. But your eyes are different. They are dark. They are deep. They hold the ink.
You turn back. You look at the gate. It is there. It is solid. It is iron. But it is empty. There is no room behind it. There is no seal. There is only the air.
You made it up. Or did you?
You do not know. It does not matter. The past is gone. The present is here. The future is open.
You walk back into the city. The fog lifts. The people are waking up. The baker is opening his shop. The street sweeper is sweeping the leaves. The world turns. It does not stop for you. It does not wait for you. You are just a person. You are just a woman. You are free.
And you are alone.
The silence is loud. It is full. It is heavy. It is yours. You carry it with you. You carry it like a stone in your pocket. You carry it like a bird in your cage.
You smile. It is a small smile. It is sad. It is light.
You are home.
