The clock on the wall ticks. It is a heavy sound. It is a wooden sound. It hits the glass face. It splits the silence. You sit in the office. The desk is oak. It is scarred. It is old. You look at the brass bell. It sits on the corner. It is cold. It is still. You do not touch it. You do not want to touch it.

The door opens. It swings wide. The air rushes in. It smells of rain. It smells of dust. A man enters. He is tall. He is thin. He wears a gray coat. The coat is wet. Water drips from the hem. He looks at you. His eyes are dark. His eyes are deep. He smiles. The smile is small. The smile is tired.

"Good morning," he says. His voice is low. His voice is soft. It sounds like dry leaves. It sounds like old paper.

"Good morning," you say. Your voice is flat. Your voice is thin. It hangs in the air. It does not move. You do not look up. You look at the bell. The bell glints. The light catches it. The light is pale. The light is gray.

He walks to the desk. His steps are quiet. He does not rush. He places a file on the wood. The file is thick. The file is brown. It looks heavy. It looks final.

"I need to speak with you," he says. He sits down. The chair creaks. The sound is sharp. It cuts the room. He leans forward. His elbows rest on the desk. His hands are clasped. His fingers are long. His fingers are pale.

"I have reviewed your work," he says. "It is good. It is precise. It is correct. But it is empty. It lacks soul. It lacks heat. It is a machine. And you are the operator. You are not the artist. You are the tool."

You do not answer. You look at your hands. They are still. They are white. They rest on the desk. They do not tremble. They do not move. You feel the cold of the wood. You feel the cold of the air. You feel the cold inside you. It spreads. It grows. It eats your bones.

"Who am I?" you ask. The words are small. They are barely a whisper. They are barely breath.

"You are the reflection," he says. He nods. He looks at the bell. He looks at you. "You mirror the institution. You mimic its rhythm. You absorb its silence. You are the glass. You are the frame. You are not the picture. You are the vessel. And vessels break. Vessels are discarded. Vessels are empty."

He stands up. He straightens his coat. He looks at the clock. The clock ticks. The second hand moves. It moves slowly. It moves with purpose. It moves with cruelty.

"Leave," he says. "Pack your things. Go home. Go to your mother. She is waiting. She has been waiting. She is the anchor. She is the weight. She is the stone that pulls you down. She is the love that kills. She is the fire that burns. Go to her. Let her hold you. Let her consume you. Let her end you."

He walks to the door. He stops. He turns. His back is to you. His shoulders are square. His shoulders are hard.

"Do not fight it," he says. "Do not resist. Surrender. Surrender is peace. Surrender is truth. Surrender is the only way out. You are not you. You are a shadow. And shadows fade. Shadows die. Shadows are gone."

The door closes. The latch clicks. The sound is final. The sound is absolute. The room is empty. The room is silent. The clock ticks. The clock ticks. The clock ticks.

You look at the bell. You look at the desk. You look at the file. You pick up the file. It is light. It feels like air. It feels like nothing. You open it. There are papers inside. There are numbers. There are dates. There are names. Your name is on every page. Your name is in ink. The ink is black. The ink is dry. The ink is permanent.

You close the file. You place it on the desk. You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your knees are weak. You walk to the window. The window is large. The window is clear. Outside, the world is gray. The sky is low. The clouds are heavy. The rain falls. The rain is fine. The rain is mist. The rain is life. The rain is death.

You see a figure in the street. She is small. She is alone. She walks fast. She looks up. She looks at the window. She sees you. She smiles. The smile is sad. The smile is sweet. The smile is wrong. The smile is wrong.

You run. You run out of the office. You run down the stairs. The stairs are cold. The stairs are steep. You do not stop. You do not breathe. You run to the door. You push it open. The cold hits you. The wind hits you. The rain hits you. You run to the car. The car is old. The car is black. You get in. You start the engine. The engine roars. The engine screams. The engine lives.

You drive. You drive fast. The streets blur. The lights smear. The world becomes a streak. The world becomes a line. The world becomes a wound. You drive home. You drive home. You drive home.

The house is dark. The lights are off. The door is open. You walk in. The floor is hard. The floor is cold. You walk to the kitchen. The kitchen is dark. The kitchen is silent. You turn on the light. The light is yellow. The light is warm. The light is fake.

She is there. She sits at the table. She is old. She is small. She wears a gray dress. The dress is plain. The dress is old. She does not move. She does not look up. She holds a cup. The cup is white. The cup is empty.

"Hello," you say. Your voice is strange. Your voice is deep. Your voice is not your voice.

"Hello," she says. Her voice is dry. Her voice is weak. Her voice is a ghost.

You sit down. The chair is cold. You sit across from her. You look at her. She looks at you. Her eyes are blue. Her eyes are faded. Her eyes are empty.

"I lost my job," you say. "I am a nobody. I am a shadow. I am a nothing."

"I know," she says. She sips from the cup. The cup is empty. She sips air. She sips silence. She sips time.

"What do I do?" you ask. "What is left? What is real? What is me?"

"Nothing," she says. "Everything is gone. Everything is ash. Everything is dust. You are dust. I am dust. We are dust. We are the same. We are the same."

She reaches out. Her hand is thin. Her hand is bony. She touches your hand. Her skin is cold. Her skin is dry. Her skin is paper. She holds your hand. She squeezes. She squeezes hard. It hurts. It hurts so much. It burns. It burns your bones. It burns your blood. It burns your soul.

"I love you," she says. "I love you so much. I love you too much. I love you until I die. I love you until you die. I love you until there is nothing. I love you until we are one. I love you until we are gone."

You feel the pull. You feel the drag. You feel the weight. You feel the sink. You feel the bottom. You feel the dark. You feel the void. You feel the end. You want it. You want it so bad. You want to disappear. You want to vanish. You want to be nothing. You want to be her. You want to be the dust.

You close your eyes. You breathe in. You breathe out. You feel the heat. You feel the fire. You feel the burn. You feel the death. You feel the life. You feel the choice.

You open your eyes. You look at her. You look at the table. You look at the cup. The cup is empty. The cup is white. The cup is clean.

"No," you say. The word is small. The word is hard. The word is a stone. The word is a wall.

She frowns. She does not understand. She does not want to understand. She holds your hand tighter. She squeezes harder. The pain is sharp. The pain is clear. The pain is real.

"No," you say again. You pull your hand away. The touch is gone. The cold is gone. The heat is gone. The silence is gone. The noise is here. The clock is here. The bell is here. The world is here.

You stand up. Your legs are strong. Your back is straight. Your mind is clear. You look at her. You look at the room. You look at the door.

"I am not your shadow," you say. "I am not your vessel. I am not your dust. I am me. I am here. I am now. I am alive."

She stares at you. Her face is blank. Her eyes are wide. Her mouth is open. She looks like a doll. She looks like a ghost. She looks like a thing.

You walk to the door. You open it. The night is there. The rain is there. The cold is there. You step out. The door closes. The latch clicks. The sound is final. The sound is absolute.

You walk into the street. The rain soaks you. The cold bites you. The wind cuts you. You walk. You walk fast. You walk hard. You walk away. You walk away from the house. You walk away from her. You walk away from the past. You walk away from the death. You walk toward the light. You walk toward the morning. You walk toward the sun. You walk toward the life.

The street is empty. The street is wet. The street is long. The street is endless. You walk. You breathe. You live. You choose. You choose to live. You choose to be. You choose to be you.

The rain stops. The clouds break. The light comes. The light is gold. The light is warm. The light is real. You stop. You look up. The sky is blue. The sky is clear. The sky is vast. The sky is infinite.

You smile. The smile is small. The smile is real. The smile is yours. The smile is new. The smile is free.

You turn. You walk back. You walk back to the office. You walk back to the desk. You walk back to the bell. You sit down. You pick up the phone. You dial a number. The number is long. The number is hard. The number is yours.

"Hello," you say. Your voice is clear. Your voice is strong. Your voice is yours. "I am here. I am ready. I am done."

The phone clicks. The line is open. The air is still. The clock ticks. The bell rings. The bell rings. The bell rings. The sound is loud. The sound is clear. The sound is yours. The sound is the end. The sound is the beginning. The sound is the truth.

You hang up. You stand up. You walk out. The day is bright. The day is new. The day is yours. You are free. You are free. You are free.
