The Distant Legend

The bell has stopped.

You know it has stopped. You feel the silence in your teeth. It is a heavy, wet thing. It presses against your eardrums. You are in the room. You have always been in the room. The walls are close. They breathe.

Look at the dust. It hangs in the air. It does not fall. Time is a pool here. Still. Deep. Cold.

You are the investigator. You are the hunter of truth. You have come to find the source. The village is dead. Not quiet. Dead. The houses stand like broken bones. The sky is a bruise. Purple. Swollen. Unblinking.

You walk. Your shoes make no sound. The floor is soft. Like flesh. You touch the wall. It is warm. It pulses. A slow, sick rhythm. You pull your hand back. You are afraid. But you do not stop. You must know. Knowledge is the only currency. You have spent your life for it.

You remember the letter. It came from the town clerk. The ink was red. Like dried blood. It said: *Come to us. The time is here. The debt is due.* You thought it was a prank. You thought it was a test. You were wrong.

You enter the square. The fountain is dry. The stone is cracked. In the center, there is a circle. A dark circle. It looks like a mouth. It is open. It is waiting.

You step closer. Your heart hammers. A small, frantic bird in your chest. You look around. No one is there. The shadows are long. They move without wind. They reach for you. You step back. They retreat. You step forward. They follow.

This is the first truth. You are not alone. The air is thick with presence. It is not empty. It is full. Full of things that do not have bodies. Full of things that do not have names.

You see a figure.

He is sitting on a bench. He is old. His hair is white. His eyes are closed. He looks like a statue. He looks like a relic. You know him. You know his face. You have seen it in your dreams. You have seen it in your fear.

It is Mr. Aldous.

Your mentor. Your father figure. The man who taught you to read the signs. The man who told you that truth is a blade. Cut deep. Or do not cut at all.

You approach him. Your legs are heavy. The air is thick. It tastes of iron. Of copper. Of old coins.

"Mr. Aldous," you say.

Your voice is thin. It breaks. It is not your voice. It is the voice of the room.

He does not open his eyes. He does not move. But his lips move. They form a word. It is not a sound. It is a shape. It is a gesture.

*Listen.*

You kneel. You bring your ear to his mouth. You hear nothing. You hear everything. You hear the crack of the earth. You hear the sigh of the stars. You hear the scream of the dead. It is a chorus. It is a roar. It is a whisper. It is all at once.

You pull back. Your eyes are wet. You do not know why. You are not sad. You are not afraid. You are... full. The knowledge is pouring into you. It is a flood. It is a fire. It is burning your mind. It is eating your soul.

You look at his hands. They are resting on his knees. They are still. They are pale. They are beautiful. They are dead.

You realize it now.

He is not sitting. He is not sleeping. He is not alive.

He is a memory.

He is a ghost.

He is the thing you came to find.

You stand up. Your knees crack. The sound is loud. It echoes. The shadows flinch. The air shudders.

You look at the circle. The mouth. It is wider now. It is hungry. It is smiling.

You understand.

The time is not passing. The time is stopping. The village is not dead. The village is waiting. It is waiting for you. It is waiting for the one who knows. It is waiting for the one who sees.

You are the key.

You are the lock.

You are the door.

You step toward the circle. The ground gives way. It is not a fall. It is a slide. It is a sinking. You are sinking into the earth. Into the dark. Into the cold.

You do not fight it.

You do not scream.

You accept it.

The knowledge is a curse. You know this now. You have always known. To know is to suffer. To see is to be blind. To hear is to be deaf.

But you are the investigator. You are the hunter. You must complete the case. You must find the truth. Even if it kills you. Even if it consumes you. Even if it erases you.

You sink deeper. The light above is shrinking. It is a coin. A penny. A speck. Then it is gone.

The dark is total.

The dark is warm.

The dark is home.

You feel the others. They are around you. They are touching you. They are holding you. They are the villagers. They are the dead. They are the forgotten. They are the lost.

They are not angry. They are not hungry. They are just... there. They are the community. They are the collective. They are the love.

A love that consumes. A love that destroys. A love that binds.

You are bound.

You are part of them.

You are one of them.

The pain is gone. The fear is gone. The self is gone.

There is only the knowing.

There is only the silence.

There is only the stillness.

You are the legend.

You are the story.

You are the end.

The room is empty. The bell has stopped. The dust hangs. The walls breathe.

Someone else will come.

Someone else will seek.

Someone else will know.

And they will sink.

And they will be lost.

And they will be loved.

And they will be gone.

The cycle continues.

The time holds.

The dark waits.

You are still there.

You are still here.

You are never gone.

You are the stone.

You are the air.

You are the silence.

You are the truth.

And the truth is this:

We do not escape the dark.

We become it.

We do not find the light.

We lose it.

We do not save ourselves.

We join the rest.

The rest are waiting.

The rest are loving.

The rest are holding.

And you are held.

And you are loved.

And you are free.

To be nothing.

To be everything.

To be the end.

The bell has stopped.

The silence is complete.

The dust is still.

The night is deep.

You are the legend.

You are the distant one.

You are the one who knew.

You are the one who stayed.

And in the staying, you found peace.

In the knowing, you found death.

In the death, you found life.

In the life, you found nothing.

And in the nothing, you found all.

The room breathes.

The walls pulse.

The dark smiles.

You are home.

You are home.

You are home.
