The Distant Ghost

The iron gate swings open. It groans. A low, rusted sound. You pull it shut. The lock clicks. A dead sound. Inside, the air is thick. It tastes of coal dust and ozone. You are not in the barracks. You are not in the trench. You are here. The ground is black glass. It reflects your boots. Your face is pale. Your hair is grey. You are old. You do not remember getting old.

You walk. Your boots crunch. The sound is too loud. It echoes. You reach for your sidearm. It is gone. In its place, a key. Heavy. Cold. Iron. You turn it over. The teeth are worn smooth. You have held this key before. You have held it for a long time. You do not remember.

The fog rolls in. It is white. It is cold. It has no smell. It has no end. You walk through it. Your lungs burn. You cough. A small sound. You swallow it down. You are a soldier. You do not cough. You do not show weakness. You keep walking. The mist clings to your uniform. It soaks the wool. You feel the weight of it. It is heavy. It is wet. It is everywhere.

You hear a voice. It is low. It is familiar. It comes from the fog. You stop. Your heart hammers. You look around. There is no one. The fog is empty. But the voice is there. It is close. It is right behind you. You turn. Nothing. Just the black glass ground. Just the white mist.

"Captain," the voice says. "You forgot the order."

Your jaw tightens. You know the voice. You know the timbre. You know the slight rasp in the back of the throat. It is Miller. You stare into the white void. "I forgot nothing," you say. Your voice is dry. It cracks. "I remember everything."

"You don't," Miller says. He steps out of the fog. He is standing there. He is young. He is wearing the old uniform. The one from the war. His face is clean. His eyes are bright. He is smiling. It is a sad smile. It is a pitying smile. You hate it. You want to hit him. You reach for your belt. There is no gun. There is only the key.

"Miller," you say. You step forward. Your boots crunch. "Why are you here?"

He does not answer. He looks at the key in your hand. His eyes narrow. "You have it," he says. "You still have it."

"I have my duty," you say. "I have my post."

Miller laughs. It is a short, sharp sound. Like a twig breaking. "Your post," he repeats. "Look around, Captain. What post is this?"

You look. The fog is thick. You cannot see the horizon. You cannot see the sky. You are in a box. The box is white. The box is endless. "It is the front line," you say. "We hold the line. We always hold the line."

Miller shakes his head. He takes a step closer. The mist parts around him. It does not touch him. "We left the line years ago," he says. "We left it before the peace treaty. We left it before the guns fell silent. You stayed."

"No," you say. You shake your head. Your vision blurs. "I stayed because I had to. Someone had to hold the door."

"The door is locked, Captain," Miller says. "It has been locked for a long time. There is no one on the other side. There is no one coming. There is no one leaving."

You feel a cold knot in your stomach. You want to deny it. You want to shout. You want to draw your weapon and fire. But you have no weapon. You only have the key. You look at it. The iron is dark. It is dull. It is useless.

"Let me in," you say. Your voice is low. It is desperate. "Miller, let me in. I have orders."

"There are no orders," Miller says. "There is only you. And the key. And the ghost."

"Who is the ghost?" you ask.

Miller points at you. He points at your chest. "You are the ghost, Captain. You have been dead since the winter. You just didn't want to stop."

The words hit you. They hit you hard. They hit you in the chest. They hit you in the head. You stumble. You catch yourself. You do not fall. You never fall. You stand up straight. You straighten your tunic. You button it to the throat. You look Miller in the eye.

"I am not dead," you say. "I am here. I am awake. I am fighting."

"Are you?" Miller asks. "What are you fighting for? Who are you fighting for?"

You open your mouth. You close it. You search your mind. You search for a name. A face. A reason. You find nothing. You find only the fog. You find only the black glass. You find only the weight of the key.

"I am fighting for the truth," you say. It is a lie. You know it is a lie. But it is the only thing you have. "The truth is out there. Behind the fog. I have to find it."

Miller sighs. He looks tired. He looks older now. The youth is fading from his face. The light is leaving his eyes. "The truth is here," he says. "It is in your hands. You are holding it. You have been holding it for a hundred years."

He reaches out. He touches your hand. His fingers are cold. They are like stone. The touch sends a shock through you. It runs up your arm. It runs into your heart. You gasp. You pull back.

"Let go," Miller says. "Let go of the key, Captain. Let go of the past. Let go of the war. You can rest now. You can die now. You can finally be free."

You look at the key. It is heavy. It is so heavy. It is pulling you down. It is pulling you into the black glass. You look at Miller. He is waiting. He is patient. He is kind. He is your friend. He is your brother. He is your enemy.

"I cannot," you say. "If I let go, I am nothing. If I let go, I was never there. If I let go, I died for nothing."

"You died for glory," Miller says. "Glory is a lie. It is a smoke. It is a mirror. It shows you what you want to see. It does not show you who you are."

You look at the mirror. The fog is a mirror. You see your reflection. You see your face. It is old. It is cracked. It is tired. You see your eyes. They are empty. They are dead. You see your hands. They are shaking. They are holding the key. You are holding the lock. You are the jailer. You are the prisoner.

You understand then. You understand the trap. You understand the price. Freedom is not a door. Freedom is a choice. Freedom is letting go. Freedom is accepting the end.

You look at Miller. He is smiling. It is a sad smile. It is a final smile. "I will wait," he says. "I will wait here. In the fog. Until you are ready."

He steps back. The fog closes over him. He vanishes. He is gone. You are alone. The silence is loud. The silence is deafening. You are alone.

You look at the key. You hold it tight. Your knuckles are white. You squeeze it. You try to bend it. You try to break it. The iron does not bend. The iron does not break. It is cold. It is hard. It is real.

You walk. You walk into the fog. You walk for hours. You walk for days. You do not know how much time has passed. Time is a lie. Time is a ghost. You walk until your feet bleed. You walk until your lungs burn. You walk until you can no longer remember your name.

You reach a wall. It is made of fog. It is solid. It is white. You push against it. It does not move. You push harder. You scream. Your voice is lost. It is swallowed. It is gone.

You fall to your knees. You drop the key. It hits the black glass. It makes a small sound. A tiny sound. It is the most beautiful sound you have ever heard.

You look at the key. It lies on the ground. It is still. It is quiet. It is free.

You reach for it. Your hand hovers. You hesitate. You remember Miller. You remember the war. You remember the pain. You remember the loss. You remember the love. You remember the friendship. You remember the betrayal. You remember the self.

You pull your hand back. You stand up. You brush the dust from your knees. You straighten your tunic. You look at the wall. You look at the key.

You do not pick it up.

You turn your back on it. You turn your back on the past. You walk away. You walk into the fog. You do not look back. You do not run. You do not hide. You walk. You walk with purpose. You walk with peace.

The fog parts. It opens. It reveals the sky. The sky is blue. It is clear. It is empty. It is free.

You breathe in. The air is sweet. The air is light. It fills your lungs. It fills your heart. It fills your soul.

You are free.

You are dead.

You are alive.

The key remains. It lies on the black glass. It waits. It is patient. It is cold. It is heavy. It is the weight of a life. It is the weight of a choice. It is the weight of a ghost.

You do not look back. You never look back. You walk into the light. You walk into the end. You walk into the beginning.

The fog closes behind you. The black glass reflects nothing. The key is alone. The key is free. The key is nothing.

You are gone.
