The Faded Chronicle

The feast is loud. It is a wall of sound. You are at the far end of the long table. The wood is cold under your hands. The candles gutter. The wax drips like blood. You are the Inquisitor. You wear the black coat. The coat is old. The wool itches. You do not move. You watch the Lord.

Lord Ashworth sits at the head. He eats with a knife. The knife is sharp. He laughs. The sound is wet. He drinks wine. The wine is dark. He looks at you. His eyes are empty. There is no fear in them. Only boredom. He is powerful. He is the law here. You are just a shadow in his house.

You have come to question him. The village is dying. The crops rot. The children cough. The river runs black. You think it is him. You think he poisoned the land. You think he killed the old priest. You are sure. You have the evidence. It is in your pocket. A piece of paper. A name. A date. It is enough.

But you do not speak. You wait. The banquet continues. Servants bring bread. The bread is stale. Servants bring meat. The meat is gray. You do not eat. Your stomach is empty. Your head is full. You are building the words. They are hard stones. You stack them in your mind. You will throw them at him. You will break him.

The Lord cuts a piece of ham. The knife scrapes the plate. The sound is loud. He chews slowly. He swallows. He wipes his mouth. He looks at you again. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is kind. It is wrong.

"You are quiet," he says.

His voice is soft. It cuts through the noise. The other guests stop talking. They look at you. You feel their eyes. They are cold. You are the stranger. You are the accuser. You are alone.

"I am listening," you say.

Your voice is dry. It cracks. You clear your throat. You reach into your pocket. Your hand shakes. You pull out the paper. It is folded. It is stained. You hold it up. The candlelight catches the ink.

"Who died in the mine," you ask.

The Lord does not look at the paper. He looks at you. He does not flinch. He does not deny it. He just looks. He waits for you to say more. He is patient. He has all the time in the world.

"Thomas," you say.

The name hangs in the air. It is heavy. It is real. Thomas was a good man. He had a wife. He had two sons. He died with his lungs full of dust. They called it an accident. You know it was not. You know the Lord sold the safety gear. You know he kept the money.

The Lord nods. He nods slowly. Once. Twice. He picks up his wine glass. He swirls the liquid. He smells it. He takes a sip.

"Yes," he says.

The room goes silent. The silence is a living thing. It presses against your ears. You feel a spike of triumph. You have him. He admitted it. You can take him. You can lock him in the cellar. You can starve him. You can make him pay for Thomas.

But he is not afraid. He is not angry. He is calm. He puts the glass down. He looks at you with pity.

"It was necessary," he says.

"What?" you ask.

"The mine," he says. "It was necessary to keep the mine open. If I stopped, the town would die. If I continued, one man died. One man. For many. Is that not the way it is?"

He shrugs. It is a casual gesture. He is bored by the logic. He has done this before. He does it every day. He balances lives on a scale. He always chooses the many. He always chooses the money.

You feel sick. The floor tilts. The candles blur. You think of Thomas. You think of his hands. They were rough. They were strong. He used to fix your fence. He used to bring you apples. He was a person. Not a number. Not a sacrifice.

"Thomas had a name," you say.

"I know his name," the Lord says. "I knew his father. I knew his grandfather. They all worked the mine. It is their destiny. It is the cycle."

He says it like a fact. Like gravity. Like rain. He does not see the cruelty. He sees the order. He sees the machine. You are part of the machine. You are the gear that turns. You are the hand that strikes.

You look at the paper in your hand. It is just paper. It is ink and fiber. It means nothing. It is a scrap of a lie. The truth is bigger. The truth is the mine. The truth is the river. The truth is the silence of the dead.

You realize you cannot win. You are not the hero. You are not the judge. You are a tool. You are the sword he uses to cut the grass. If you strike, you are complicit. If you do not strike, you are weak. There is no way out. The cycle is a circle. You are on the edge. You spin.

The Lord stands up. He buttons his waistcoat. He straightens his cravat. He looks at you one last time.

"Finish your meal," he says.

He walks away. He walks to the door. He opens it. The night air rushes in. It is cold. It smells of damp earth. It smells of death. He steps out. The door closes. The latch clicks.

You are alone. The other guests are gone. They slipped away. They do not want to be here. They do not want to see your face. They leave you with the silence.

You look at the table. The plates are empty. The cups are empty. The wax pools on the wood. You look at your hands. They are clean. They are red. Not with blood. With life. You are still alive. You are still here.

You pick up the paper. You look at it. The name Thomas is clear. You fold it. You put it in your pocket. You do not burn it. You do not throw it away. You keep it. It is a weight. It is an anchor.

You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your knees pop. You walk to the window. The glass is fogged. You breathe on it. You wipe a circle with your sleeve. You look out.

The mine is in the distance. It is a dark hole in the hill. It is a mouth. It opens and closes. It eats. It gives. It eats the men. It gives the gold. It eats the gold. It gives the dust. It is a beast. It is alive.

You see a light. A small light. It flickers. It is a lantern. It moves. It moves toward the house. It moves toward you.

You know who it is. It is Thomas. Or it is his ghost. Or it is your memory. It does not matter. The light is real. The cold is real. The pain is real.

The light stops at the door. It does not enter. It waits. It waits for you.

You turn around. You look at the empty room. You look at the cold plates. You look at the dying candles. You are the Inquisitor. You are the detective. You have found the truth. The truth is ugly. The truth is boring. The truth is the system. The system works. The system feeds. The system survives.

You are part of it. You are the shadow. You are the silence. You are the one who watches. You are the one who knows. And knowing is not enough. Knowing does not save Thomas. Knowing does not clean the river. Knowing does not break the cycle.

You sit down. You sit in the chair. The wood creaks. You put your hands on the table. You press them flat. You feel the grain. You feel the cold. You feel the weight of the room.

The light outside flickers. It goes out. The dark returns. The dark is total. The dark is absolute. You are in the dark. You are in the silence. You are in the cycle.

You close your eyes. You breathe in. You breathe out. You are here. You are alone. You are free. You are trapped. You are the same. You are the mirror. You see your face in the dark window. It is your face. It is his face. It is the face of the mine. It is the face of the Lord. It is the face of the dead.

You do not move. You do not speak. You wait. The night is long. The night is endless. The night is the truth. And the truth is that you will stay. You will watch. You will remember. You will be the witness. You will be the stone. You will be the wall. And the wall will hold. The wall will stand. The cycle will turn. And you will be there. Turning. Turning. Turning. Until the end. Until the nothing. Until the quiet.

The feast is over. The table is bare. The candles are out. The dark is here. You are here. You are alone. You are home.
