The Golden Greenhouse

The glass shatters. Not with a crash, but with a sigh.

You stand in the center of the room. The floor is cold. The air smells of ozone and old paper. You are a soldier. You have always been a soldier. Your uniform is pressed. Your boots are polished. But your hands are trembling.

Look at the door. It is locked. From the inside. You know this. You have always known this. But you knock anyway.

"Let me in," you say. Your voice is steady. It is a command.

No answer.

The room is a greenhouse. It is also a prison. It is also a hospital. It is also a church. The walls are made of thick glass. Outside, a storm rages. Inside, the plants are dead. They are brown and brittle. They look like bones.

You touch a leaf. It crumbles. It turns to dust in your palm. You shake your hand. The dust falls.

Who made this place?

You look at the corner. There is a chair. In the chair sits a man. He is small. He is old. He is wearing a white coat. He is watching you. He is smiling.

"Hello, Thomas," he says.

You do not know this name. But it feels right. It feels like a stone in your shoe. You have carried it for years.

"Who are you?" you ask.

"I am the gardener," he says. "And you are the weed."

You step closer. The glass walls reflect your face. The reflection is wrong. It is older. It is sadder. It is wearing your face, but the eyes are different. The eyes are empty.

"I am not a weed," you say.

"Are you not?" The gardener leans forward. "Look at the door. Look at the key."

You look at the door. There is a keyhole. There is no key. There is only a mirror. You are looking at yourself.

"Open it," you command.

"Open what?" he asks.

"Let me out."

"There is no out," he says. "There is only the growing."

You strike him. It is a quick blow. It is precise. It is military. You hit him in the jaw. He does not fall. He does not even flinch. He just smiles wider.

"You are strong," he says. "But you are tired."

You feel the exhaustion. It is heavy. It is in your bones. It is in your blood. You have been fighting for a long time. You do not remember when it started. You do not remember why. You only know that you must stop. You must win. You must get out.

You grab his collar. You pull him up from the chair. He is lighter than you expected. He is like dry leaves.

"Who are you?" you shout.

"I am you," he says. "I am the part of you that wants to stop."

You push him away. He falls. He laughs. It is a dry, rattling laugh.

"Try again," he says. "Punch the glass. Punch the truth. See what happens."

You do not punch the glass. You punch him. You punch him again. And again. And again. You hit him until your knuckles bleed. You hit him until your arms shake. You hit him until you are gasping for air.

He does not bleed. He just looks at you. He looks at you with pity.

"Why do you do this?" he asks.

"Because I have to," you say.

"You do not have to," he says. "You can choose to stop."

"I cannot stop."

"You can."

"I am a soldier."

"You are a father."

The word hits you. It is a bullet. It is a blade. It is a key.

Father.

You freeze. Your hands are still raised. Your fists are clenched. Your blood drips onto the floor. It mixes with the dust from the dead plants.

"Who?" you ask. Your voice is small. It is a child's voice.

"Your son," he says. "The one in the other room."

You look around. There is another door. It was there before. You did not see it. It is small. It is white. It is closed.

You walk to it. You do not run. You walk. Your legs are heavy. Your heart is heavy. You open the door.

Inside is a small room. It is warm. It smells of milk and soap. There is a crib. In the crib is a baby. He is sleeping. He is breathing. He is alive.

You look at his face. It is your face. It is your grandfather's face. It is the face of everyone you have ever lost. It is the face of everyone you have ever saved.

You fall to your knees. You put your hand on the glass of the crib. You do not break it. You just rest your hand there. You feel the heat. You feel the life.

The gardener is gone. The chair is empty. The dead plants are gone. The room is bright. The storm outside has stopped. The sun is shining through the glass.

You are still in the greenhouse. You are still in the prison. But the bars are gone. The door is open.

You stand up. Your legs are weak. You feel old. You feel young. You feel everything.

You look at the baby. He opens his eyes. He looks at you. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a complete smile.

You smile back.

You pick up the baby. He is warm. He is heavy. He is real. You hold him close to your chest. You feel his heartbeat. It is steady. It is strong. It is your heartbeat.

You walk to the main door. It is open. The light is blinding. The air is cool. The grass is green.

You step outside.

You are free.

But you are not free.

You are bound.

You are bound to him.

You are bound to the past.

You are bound to the choice you just made.

You look back at the greenhouse. The glass is gone. The structure is gone. There is only the frame. The wooden frame. It is bare. It is skeletal. It stands in the field like a ribcage.

You turn away. You walk down the path. The path is long. It leads to the house. The house is white. The curtains are drawn.

You know what is inside. You know who is waiting. You know the truth.

You did not save the world. You did not stop the war. You did not find the enemy.

You found yourself.

And you chose to stay.

You chose the cage.

You chose the chain.

You chose the love.

The sun sets. The sky turns red. Then purple. Then black. The stars come out. They are bright. They are cold.

You walk faster. Your arms are full. Your heart is full. Your life is full.

You are a soldier.

You are a father.

You are a prisoner.

You are free.

The irony is sharp. It cuts deep. You wanted to escape the system. You wanted to break the rules. You wanted to be the hero who walks away.

But the hero who walks away is a ghost.

The hero who stays is a man.

And men are heavy.

You reach the door of the house. You do not knock. You do not call out. You just stand there. You look at the wood. You look at the grain. You look at the years.

You raise your hand. You knock.

Three times.

The door opens.

A woman stands there. She is old. She is tired. She is beautiful.

She looks at you. She looks at the baby.

She does not say anything.

She steps aside.

You walk in.

The door closes behind you.

The lock clicks.

It is a small sound. It is a final sound.

You are home.

You are lost.

You are found.

The story ends.

The story never ends.

You live in the greenhouse. You tend to the dead plants. You water them. You pray for them. They do not grow. They do not live.

But you do.

You breathe.

You love.

You suffer.

It is enough.

It is more than enough.

It is everything.

The glass is gone.

The truth is here.

The cost is high.

The price is paid.

You paid it with your freedom.

You paid it with your peace.

You paid it with your soul.

And you would do it again.

You would do it again.

You would do it again.

Because the alternative is silence.

And silence is death.

And you are not dead.

You are alive.

You are here.

You are now.

The end is the beginning.

The beginning is the end.

The circle is closed.

The loop is broken.

The chain is unbroken.

You hold the baby.

He sleeps.

You watch him.

You wait.

The night is long.

The dawn is far.

But the light will come.

It always comes.

It must come.

You close your eyes.

You breathe in.

You breathe out.

You are Thomas.

You are the soldier.

You are the father.

You are the weed.

You are the garden.

You are the glass.

You are the shatter.

You are the silence.

You are the sound.

You are the story.

And the story is you.
