The Distant Nightmare

The bell tolls. Not once, but seven times. The sound is heavy, wet, and iron-throated. It shakes the cobblestones under your boots. You do not run. You stand still. The air tastes of copper and old rain. This is the night the city wakes.

You are the Keeper. You wear the cloak. It is not wool. It is skin. Your own skin, stretched and woven into a shroud that clings to your bones. It is cold. It is always cold. You have worn it for a hundred years. You have forgotten the name of the man who first put it on. You are Edward. You are the wall. You are the silence between the screams.

The fog rolls in from the harbor. It is thick. It has weight. It presses against your face like a damp hand. You know what hides in it. You have seen it before. The shapes are not human. They are tangles of shadow and teeth. They do not walk. They flow. They seek the warmth of living things.

Your ally is there. Thomas. He stands by the gate. He holds his lantern. The flame is blue. It does not flicker. It burns with a light that hurts the eyes. Thomas is old. His face is a map of scars. He does not look at you. He looks at the fog.

"Are you ready?" he asks. His voice is rough. It is the voice of a man who has swallowed stones.

"Yes," you say. You do not move. You are stone. You are the wall.

The fog thickens. The shapes emerge. They are tall. They have no faces. They are made of smoke and malice. They reach for Thomas. He raises the lantern. The blue light flares. The shapes recoil. They hiss. The sound is like glass breaking.

You step forward. You take the lantern. You give it to Thomas.

"No," he says. "Keep it. You need the light."

"I am the light," you say. "I am the dark that holds the light."

You turn away. You walk into the fog. You do not look back. You feel the cold of the cloak tighten. It is a hug. It is a noose. It is your life.

The creatures are close. You can feel their breath on your neck. It is icy. It burns. You do not fight. You do not strike. You accept. You open your arms. The fog wraps around you. The cloak tightens. You are disappearing. You are becoming part of the wall.

Then, a voice.

"Edward!"

It is a woman’s voice. It is sharp. It cuts through the fog. It is a blade.

You stop. The fog parts.

There she is. Margaret.

She stands in the light of the gate. She wears a white dress. It is stained with blood. Her hair is loose. Her eyes are wide. They are not afraid. They are angry.

"Come back," she says. "Leave the cloak. Leave the duty. Come back to me."

You want to. God, you want to. You feel the pull. It is stronger than the fog. It is stronger than the duty. You take a step toward her.

The fog surges. It screams. It is a roar of pain.

"No," Thomas says. He is behind Margaret. He holds the lantern. His face is pale. "If you leave, the city dies. If you leave, we all die."

Margaret looks at Thomas. She looks at you. She does not blink.

"Let me go," she says. "Let me die. Let me be free."

You look at her. You see the blood on her dress. It is not yours. It is not the fog’s. It is fresh. It is red. It is bright.

You realize. You have always known. But you refused to see.

The cloak is not yours. It is hers.

You took it from her. A hundred years ago. You took it from her body. She was dying. The plague. The fever. You were the soldier. You were the one who saved the city. But you saved it with her life. You wrapped her corpse in her skin. You wore it. You kept the heat. You kept the strength. You used her death to build your wall.

The fog is her rage. The creatures are her pain. They have been chasing you for a century. Not to kill you. To take it back.

You look at Margaret. She is not a ghost. She is the living memory of your sin.

"I am sorry," you say. Your voice is small. It is a child’s voice.

"I know," she says. "I know, Edward. I am tired."

The fog closes in. The creatures are upon you. You do not fight. You drop your hands. You let the cloak fall.

It hits the ground. It does not disappear. It lies there. A heap of dark, wet cloth.

You are naked. You are cold. You are mortal.

The creatures stop. They look at you. They do not attack. They wait.

Margaret walks forward. She steps over the cloak. She takes your hand. Her hand is warm. It is real.

"We leave," she says.

"Where?" you ask.

"Anywhere," she says. "Not here. Not in the wall. Not in the duty."

Thomas watches. He lowers the lantern. The blue light fades. The fog begins to clear. The city is silent. The bell stops.

You look at the city. The towers. The spires. The gates. You have protected it. You have bled for it. You have worn the skin of your wife to keep it safe.

But it is not safe. It is a cage.

You turn your back on the city. You follow Margaret.

The fog lifts. The morning comes. The sun is pale. It is weak. But it is there.

You walk. You do not look back. The cloak is behind you. It is just cloth now. It is just a thing.

You are free.

But the weight is in your chest. It is a stone. It is a memory. It will never leave.

You are Edward. You are the man who loved too much. You are the man who kept too tight.

The sun rises. It burns your skin. It hurts.

You do not close your eyes.

You walk into the light.
