The Faded Masquerade
The ink is wet. You know this. The smell of iron and salt hangs in the air. Thick. Heavy. It coats your tongue. You are here. You are always here.
The town of Oakhaven sleeps. But you do not. You cannot. The walls of the cellar are cold. Stone. Old. They breathe. Or so it feels. You press your back against the damp. Your hands shake. Not from fear. From hunger. The kind that eats the soul.
You are a penitent. A sinner. They say you stole. They say you burned. They say you killed. You do not argue. It is easier to wear the weight. To let the guilt define you. To be the prisoner. It is a comfortable cage. Familiar. Safe.
The door creaks. You freeze.
Footsteps. Heavy. Slow.
Light spills under the door. A thin slice. Gold.
"Thomas," a voice says. Soft. Familiar. "Thomas, wake up."
It is Margaret.
You do not move. You hold your breath. Your heart hammers. A drum. A trap.
She opens the door. Fully.
She stands there. Tall. Pale. Wearing a coat of dark wool. Her eyes are red. Swollen. She looks at you. Really looks.
"You are still here," she says.
"I am," you whisper. Your voice is rough. Scraped raw.
"Come with me."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I deserve this."
"No," she says. Her voice hardens. "You do not. You are a fool. A sad, broken fool. Come."
She extends her hand.
You look at it. The skin is dry. The nails are short. Clean.
You do not take it.
She sighs. A long, weary sound. She turns.
"Fine," she says. "I will wait."
She sits on the floor. Across from you. She crosses her legs. She waits.
The silence grows. It has teeth.
Hours pass. Or minutes. Time is a lie here.
The light changes. The gold turns to gray. Then to blue.
Margaret does not leave.
She leans back. She looks at the ceiling.
"Do you remember the masquerade?" she asks.
You close your eyes.
The mask. White. Porcelain. Smooth.
You wore it. You remember.
It was years ago. Before the fall.
The ballroom was full. Chandeliers. Crystal. Music.
You were not supposed to be there. You were the servant. The shadow.
But you went.
You saw her.
Eleanor.
She was the daughter of the Mayor. High above the rest.
She wore a mask of black velvet. Eyes like stars.
She looked at you.
Just looked.
You felt seen.
For the first time.
You danced with her. One dance.
She whispered in your ear.
"Are you happy?"
You did not answer.
She smiled.
Then the lights went out.
When they came back, the room was empty.
Except for the bodies.
Three of them.
The Mayor. His wife. The clerk.
You were standing in the middle of the floor. Holding a knife.
You did not remember picking it up.
You did not remember stabbing.
You only remembered the silence.
And the mask.
It was on the floor. Broken.
You ran.
You hid.
You became the monster.
The town said you did it.
You let them.
It was easier.
To be the killer.
To be the prisoner.
To be defined by the act.
"Thomas," Margaret says. Her voice is sharp. "Open your eyes."
You open them.
She is looking at you. Intensely.
"You did not kill them," she says.
You laugh. A dry, hollow sound.
"What?"
"Listen to me."
"No."
"Thomas."
"Go away."
"I will not."
"Why are you here?"
"Because I know the truth."
"You know nothing."
"I know who really did it."
Your breath catches.
The air is cold.
"Who?" you ask.
She stands. She brushes off her coat.
"Edward Ashworth."
The name hits you. Like a stone.
Edward.
The neighbor. The friend. The one who brought you food when the guards forgot.
The one who smiled.
The one who looked at you with pity.
"No," you say. "That is a lie."
"It is not."
"Prove it."
"I can."
"How?"
She reaches into her pocket.
She pulls out a piece of paper.
It is old. Yellowed.
She holds it out.
You take it.
Your hands tremble.
You look at the paper.
It is a letter.
Signed.
In ink.
You read it.
The words blur.
*...and I did it. I did it because I loved her. And I hate you. I hate that you were there. I hate that you took her from me...*
The handwriting is Edward’s.
You know it.
You know the loop of the *e*. The sharp *t*.
You drop the paper.
It flutters to the floor.
You look at Margaret.
Her face is calm.
"Did you know?" you ask.
"Always," she says.
"You let me rot."
"I tried to help."
"You lied."
"I waited."
"Waited for what?"
"For you to break."
You feel the floor tilt.
The walls breathe.
The ink.
The wet ink.
You look at your hands.
They are stained.
Black.
Not blood.
Ink.
You have been writing.
For years.
You have been writing the same letter.
Over and over.
In the dark.
In the cellar.
You did not know.
You thought you were praying.
You thought you were remembering.
But you were writing.
Confessing.
To no one.
To yourself.
You look at the paper on the floor.
The letter from Edward.
It is blank.
You look closer.
It is not blank.
It is your handwriting.
You wrote it.
You forged it.
You made up the truth.
Because you needed a villain.
You needed a reason.
You needed to hate someone else.
You needed to be the victim.
You needed to be the penitent.
Not the monster.
Not the killer.
Just the sinner.
It was safer.
It was lighter.
You laugh again.
It is a terrible sound.
Margaret flinches.
"You fool," she says. But there is no anger in it. Only sadness. Deep. Old.
"I am free," you say.
"No," she says. "You are trapped."
"Trapped?"
"In your own story."
You look at the ink on your hands.
It dries.
It becomes part of you.
The stain.
The mark.
You cannot wash it off.
You stand up.
Your legs are weak.
You walk to the door.
Margaret follows.
You stop.
You turn.
"I am not going out," you say.
"Thomas..."
"I cannot."
"Why?"
"Because I am not Thomas."
She stares at you.
The light is fading. The blue is turning to black.
"Who are you?" she asks.
"I am the ink," you say.
You look at your hands.
They are black.
All black.
From wrist to elbow.
You feel it spreading.
Up your arms.
To your chest.
To your face.
It is cold.
It is heavy.
It is real.
The town sleeps.
But you are awake.
You are the mask.
You are the break.
You are the silence.
You are the stain.
You look at Margaret.
She is crying.
She does not run.
She does not scream.
She stays.
She waits.
As you fade.
As the ink takes you.
As you become part of the wall.
Part of the stone.
Part of the story.
You do not fight it.
You let it go.
You let the guilt go.
You let the name go.
You let the past go.
You are nothing.
You are everything.
You are the word.
Written in blood.
Written in ink.
Written in silence.
The door closes.
You are alone.
But you are not.
You are with them.
The dead.
The living.
The ink.
It flows.
It stays.
It is here.
It is always here.
You close your eyes.
The dark is warm.
The dark is wet.
The dark is home.
You breathe.
The air is thick.
The smell of iron.
The smell of salt.
The smell of end.
You are free.
You are bound.
You are the masquerade.
You are the fade.
You are the mark.
It remains.
It stays.
It is.
