The dream was cold. It was a slab of ice that cut through the chest.

Marcus lay in the cot. The sheets were thin. He did not sleep. He watched the dust motes dance in the pale light. They moved slowly. They moved with intent.

He sat up. The room was small. The walls were white. The air was stale.

He looked at the mirror.

The face in the glass was not his. It was older. The eyes were deep. The jaw was set. It was the face of a man who had seen too much. It was the face of his father.

Marcus touched the glass. The glass was warm.

He blinked. The face changed. It became his own. Young. Soft. Unformed.

He laughed. The sound was dry. It cracked in his throat.

"Who are you?" he whispered.

The mirror did not answer. It only reflected.

He stood up. His legs felt heavy. The floor was cold. He walked to the door. The door was locked.

He pushed. It did not move.

He pulled. It did not move.

He was trapped.

He sat back down on the bed. He closed his eyes. The dream faded. The ice in his chest melted.

He opened his eyes. The room was the same. The dust motes were still dancing.

But now, they were moving faster.

He looked at the clock. 0400 hours.

He had to go to the briefing.

He dressed. The uniform fit tight. The fabric was stiff. He buttoned the shirt. He tied the tie. He put on the jacket.

He looked in the mirror again. The face was his own. But the eyes were the father’s.

He nodded. He knew what he had to do.

He left the room. The hallway was long. The floor was linoleum. It squeaked under his boots.

He walked to the main hall. The doors were open.

There were people inside. They sat in rows. They wore uniforms. They were quiet.

Marcus found his seat. He sat down.

The commander stood at the front. He was tall. His voice was low.

"Men," he said. "We have a problem."

The room was silent.

"There is a leak," the commander said. "Inside the unit. Someone is passing information to the enemy."

Marcus looked down at his hands. His hands were shaking.

"We have narrowed it down," the commander continued. "It is one of you."

The air in the room grew thick. It was hard to breathe.

"We will test you," the commander said. "We will give you a choice. You will be alone. You will be given a task. The task is simple. The choice is yours. To follow orders. Or to betray."

Marcus felt a cold spike in his stomach.

"Who is next?" the commander asked.

A hand went up. It was Sergeant Miller.

Miller was big. He was strong. He had served with Marcus for five years. They were friends. Their friendship was primal. It was built on blood and silence.

Miller stood up. He walked to the front. He did not look at Marcus.

The commander nodded. Miller left the room.

The next hand went up. It was Captain Vance.

Vance was the mentor. He had trained Marcus. He had taught him how to shoot. How to think. How to survive.

Vance stood up. He looked at Marcus. His eyes were kind. He mouthed a word. *Trust.*

Vance left the room.

The room was getting smaller. The faces were getting fewer.

There were only five men left.

Marcus.

And four others.

The commander looked at them.

"You," he said, pointing at Marcus. "Next."

Marcus stood up. His legs felt like lead. He walked to the door.

He looked back. The four men stared at him. Their faces were blank.

He walked out.

The hallway was dark. The lights were off. He felt his way along the wall.

He reached a door. It was open.

He entered.

The room was empty. There was a table. There was a chair. There was a gun on the table.

There was a note.

He picked up the note.

It said: *Shoot the target in the next room. Or die.*

There was a photo attached.

It was Miller.

Marcus stared at the photo. Miller was smiling. He looked happy.

Marcus’s hand shook. He picked up the gun. It was heavy. It was cold.

He heard a sound.

It was a voice.

It was Miller’s voice.

"Marcus."

Marcus turned.

Miller was standing in the doorway. He was not wearing a uniform. He was wearing a shirt and pants. He looked tired.

"Put the gun down," Miller said.

"Why?" Marcus asked. His voice was a whisper.

"Because it is a lie," Miller said.

"What?"

"The leak," Miller said. "It is not us. It is them."

Marcus looked at the gun. He looked at Miller.

"Who?" Marcus asked.

"The commander," Miller said. "He is feeding them. He is selling us out. He is using us to test his own loyalty. To the system."

Marcus felt the floor drop out from under him.

"No," he said.

"Yes," Miller said. "Look at his face. When he spoke. Did you see it? He was not afraid. He was bored. He was playing a game."

Marcus thought of the briefing. He thought of the commander’s eyes. They had been dead.

"The test," Marcus said. "What was the test?"

"To see who would shoot," Miller said. "To see who would kill a friend for orders. If you shoot me, you are theirs. If you do not shoot, you are free."

Marcus looked at the gun.

"I don't want to be free," Marcus said. "I want to belong."

Miller stepped closer. He put a hand on Marcus’s shoulder.

"You belong to yourself, Marcus. That is the only thing that matters."

The door opened.

The commander walked in. He was alone. He held a rifle.

He smiled.

"Time is up," he said.

Marcus did not move.

"Shoot," the commander said. "Shoot him. Or I will shoot you."

Marcus looked at the commander. He looked at Miller.

He thought of the mirror. He thought of the father’s face.

He realized the truth.

The father was not the enemy. The father was the ghost. The ghost of who he was before. The ghost of the man he wanted to be.

The commander was the mirror. The mirror that showed him what he was.

A soldier. A tool.

Marcus raised the gun.

The commander tensed.

Miller closed his eyes.

Marcus lowered the gun.

He put it on the table.

He stepped forward.

The commander fired.

The bullet hit Marcus in the chest.

It was hot. It was fast.

Marcus fell.

He hit the floor. The linoleum was cold.

He looked up.

The commander was pointing the rifle at Miller.

"Pick one," the commander said. "One of you dies. Or both."

Marcus looked at Miller. Miller looked at Marcus.

They understood.

Miller stood up. He moved.

He was fast. He was strong.

He tackled the commander.

They fell to the floor. They rolled. They fought.

It was a meat fight. It was primal. It was ugly.

The commander struck Miller. Miller struck back.

The rifle clattered on the floor.

Miller pinned the commander. He straddled him. He held the commander’s throat.

The commander gagged. He kicked.

Miller did not let go.

Marcus lay on the floor. His chest was burning. His vision was blurring.

He heard Miller’s voice.

"Stay down," Miller said. "Stay down."

The commander stopped moving.

Miller stood up. He walked to Marcus.

He knelt beside him.

"Look at me," Miller said.

Marcus looked. His eyes were watering.

"You did it," Miller said. "You let go."

Marcus tried to speak. He could not.

Miller put a hand on Marcus’s face.

"It is over," Miller said. "The test is over. You passed."

Marcus closed his eyes.

The pain was fading. The heat was cooling.

He thought of the dream. The ice was gone. The dust motes were gone.

There was only the light.

It was white. It was pure.

He felt a pull. It was gentle. It was strong.

He was being lifted.

He was rising.

He was not heavy. He was light.

He looked at the ceiling.

The mirror was gone.

There was only the sky.

He smiled.

He let go.

The story ends here. The man is gone. The friend is alone. The system is broken.

But the spirit is free.

It is a small freedom. It is a quiet freedom.

But it is real.

Marcus is dead.

He is at peace.

The ice has melted.

The dream is over.

The waking is done.

He is one.

He is whole.

He is free.

And that is enough.

That is all.

That is everything.

The end.
