The Distant Blade

You dream of the knife. It is not a knife of steel. It is a shard of ice, or a tooth, or a sliver of bone. You hold it in your palm. The cold burns. You do not drop it. You cannot. The town sleeps. The rain taps the roof like fingers on a drum. You are seven. You are seven and you are awake.

The object is a spoon. A silver spoon, tarnished black in the bowl. It sits on the table. You want it. You do not want to eat. You want the weight of it. You want the way it catches the light. You are small. The table is high. You reach. Your fingers brush the cold metal.

"Put that down."

The voice is low. It is Mr. Hale. He is the shopkeeper. He stands by the door. His face is a mask. His eyes are hard. He does not look at you. He looks at the spoon.

"It is mine," you say. Your voice is thin. A thread.

"Nothing is yours," he says. "You are a burden. You are a stain."

You know he is wrong. You know this in your bones. But you do not say it. You take the spoon. You run. Your shoes slap the wet pavement. The rain soaks your hair. You run to the alley. You hide behind the dumpster. The spoon is in your hand. You lick it. It tastes of rust. It tastes of old blood. It tastes of freedom.

You are not seven anymore. You are twelve. The spoon is still in your pocket. It is heavier now. It is not a spoon. It is a key. It is a blade. It is the thing that will cut you free.

The town is gray. The houses lean in. The people walk with their heads down. They do not speak to you. They see a monster. They see a thief. They see a boy who steals spoons. They do not see the dream. They do not see the ice. They do not see the fire.

You meet Jack. Jack is old. He has a limp. He sits on the bench by the park. He feeds the pigeons. He does not look at you. He tosses a crumb. The birds gather.

"Sit," Jack says.

You sit. Your knee touches his.

"You have the spoon," he says.

"You know?"

"I know everything." He spits. "It is not a spoon. It is a mirror."

You look at the spoon. It is in your hand. The tarnish is gone. It is bright. It is white.

"What does it show?" you ask.

"Yourself," Jack says. "The real you. Not the thief. Not the stain. The king."

You want to believe him. You want to be the king. You want the crown. You want the throne. You look at the spoon. You see your face. Your eyes are wide. Your mouth is open. You are screaming. You are not screaming. You are smiling.

"Jack," you say. "How do I use it?"

Jack stands. His leg aches. He winces.

"You do not use it," he says. "You are it."

He walks away. He leaves you alone. The rain stops. The sun comes out. The light is harsh. It hurts your eyes.

You go home. Your mother is there. She is crying. She is on the floor. The room is messy. The dishes are piled high.

"Mom," you say.

She looks up. Her face is swollen.

"Did you take it?" she asks.

"Take what?"

"The silver. The good silver."

"No."

She stops crying. She looks at you. Her eyes are soft.

"I am sorry," she says. "I thought you were like them. I thought you were like him."

You do not understand. You do not care. You walk to your room. You lock the door. You take out the spoon. You hold it. You look at your reflection.

You are not a king. You are a child. You are small. You are weak. The spoon is heavy. It pulls your hand down. You drop it. It hits the floor. It does not break. It bends.

You are not free. You are trapped. The dream is a lie. The ice is a lie. The fire is a lie.

You are thirteen. The spoon is bent. You try to straighten it. You use a hammer. It dings. It dings. It dings. The sound is loud. The neighbors come to the door.

"Stop that noise," they shout. "Stop that noise."

You stop. You hide the spoon. You hide in the closet. You sit in the dark. You think of Jack. You think of Mr. Hale. You think of your mother.

You are not a thief. You are not a king. You are a boy. You are a boy who wants to be loved. You are a boy who wants to be seen.

You go out again. The town is quiet. The rain is back. The water runs in the gutters. You walk to the park. Jack is there. He is gone. The bench is empty. The pigeons are gone.

You look at your hand. You do not have the spoon. You left it in your room. You run home. You open the closet. The spoon is there. It is straight. It is perfect.

You take it. You go to the river. The river is black. It is fast. You stand on the bank. You hold the spoon over the water.

"I want to be free," you say.

The water swirls. It pulls at your feet. You step back. You throw the spoon in. It skims. It sinks. It is gone.

You are free. You are not free. You are alone.

You are fifteen. The town is changing. New houses are built. New people arrive. They are bright. They are loud. They do not know you. They do not know your name.

You work at the shop. You are not a thief. You are a clerk. You ring the cash. You smile. You are good. You are quiet.

Mr. Hale is dead. His shop is sold. A woman buys it. She is kind. She gives you a raise.

"Good work," she says.

You smile. You do not feel good. You feel empty. You feel hollow.

You meet a girl. Her name is Sarah. She is tall. She has red hair. She laughs loud. She likes music. She likes to dance.

You dance with her. Your feet move. Your body moves. You are not alone. You are with her. You are in the music.

"Where did you go?" she asks.

"Nowhere," you say.

"You were far away."

"I was dreaming."

"Of what?"

"Of a spoon."

She laughs. She touches your arm. Her hand is warm.

"You are strange," she says. "But I like it."

You fall in love. It is fast. It is strong. It is like fire. It burns. You do not want to let go. You want to hold on. You want to keep her.

But you are not free. You are bound. You are bound to the past. You are bound to the shame. You are bound to the lie.

Sarah leaves. She goes to the city. She sends letters. The letters get shorter. They get colder.

"Goodbye," the last one says.

You do not cry. You do not scream. You fold the letter. You put it in your drawer. You close the drawer. You sit on the bed. You are alone.

You are sixteen. The town is still gray. The houses are still leaning. The people are still silent.

You find the spoon. It is not in the river. It is in the mud. It is clean. It is bright.

You pick it up. You hold it. You look at your reflection.

You are not a king. You are not a thief. You are a man. You are a man who has lost. You are a man who has won. You do not know which.

You go to Jack’s grave. It is small. It is forgotten. The grass is long.

You sit. You hold the spoon.

"I am here," you say.

The wind blows. The leaves rustle. The earth is cold.

You are not free. Freedom is a weight. Freedom is a burden. Freedom is a blade.

You cut your hand. The blood is red. It is hot. It is real. You do not wipe it. You let it run. You let it drip on the grass. You let it stain the earth.

You are not a child. You are not a boy. You are a man. You are a man who has chosen pain. You are a man who has chosen truth.

The sun sets. The sky is purple. The stars come out. You stand up. You walk home.

The spoon is in your pocket. It is heavy. It is cold. It is yours.

You are not free. You are not trapped. You are here. You are now. You are alive.

The end is not an end. It is a beginning. It is a breath. It is a heartbeat.

You are the spoon. You are the blade. You are the wound. You are the scar.

You are free.

You are not free.

It does not matter.

The rain falls. The town sleeps. You walk. You are alone. You are together. You are the dream. You are the waking.

You are the distant blade. You are the sharp edge. You are the cut that heals. You are the cut that never heals.

You are you.

The story is over. The story is never over. The spoon is in your hand. The spoon is in your heart. The spoon is in the world.

You are free.
