The Wistful Saga

The train smells of rust and wet wool. You are twelve. Your shoes are too big. They flap against the floorboards. The rhythm is a heartbeat. Or a drill.

You sit by the window. The glass is fogged. You trace a circle. It disappears. The air is thick. It presses against your lungs. You breathe in. You breathe out. The engine coughs. The wheels scream.

This is the journey. This is the beginning.

You hold a tin box. It is cold in your hands. Inside is a map. It is torn. The edges are jagged. Like teeth. You do not look at it. You know what it says. You know where it points.

Across the aisle sits a man. He is old. His coat is patched. His eyes are wet. He looks at you. He smiles. It is a bad smile. It does not reach his eyes.

"Rough ride," he says. His voice is dry. Like leaves.

You do not answer. You watch the trees. They are black streaks. They fly past. The world is blurred. The world is fast.

The train stops. Steam hisses. The doors open. The air is cold. It bites. You step out. The platform is empty. The sky is grey. It hangs low. It touches the ground.

A whistle blows. Long. Sharp. It pierces your ears.

You walk. Your feet slap the concrete. Left. Right. Left. Right. The sound echoes. It follows you. You are not alone. You are never alone. The ghost of your father walks beside you. He has no face. He has no voice. He only has weight. He pulls you forward.

You reach the factory. It is a beast. It stands in the dirt. It is made of brick and iron. Smoke pours from the chimney. It is black. It stains the air. The smell is sour. It is the smell of burnt oil. And sweat.

You enter. The doors clang. The noise hits you. It is a wall of sound. Hammers. Gears. Screams. The floor vibrates. It shakes your bones.

People move. They are shadows. They are workers. They do not look up. They are tired. They are broken. Their hands are stained. With grease. With blood.

You walk through the maze. You find the office. It is small. It is hot. The air is stale. A desk sits in the center. A man sits behind it.

He is young. He wears a suit. It is clean. It is white. He looks like a doll. He looks like a child. He is not a child. He is the master.

He looks at you. He sees the tin box. His eyes widen. They are bright. They are hungry.

"Give it to me," he says.

You do not move. Your hand is tight. Your knuckles are white.

"Why?" you ask. Your voice is small. It is quiet.

He leans forward. He smiles. It is the same smile. As the man on the train. It is a trap.

"Because," he says. "I need it."

You know. You know why he needs it. The map leads to the mine. The mine holds the coal. The coal holds the power. The power holds the city. And the city holds the war.

You are not a spy. You are not a soldier. You are a boy. You are a ghost. You are the key.

You hand over the box. Your fingers touch his. They are cold. He is warm. The heat burns. You pull back. You recoil.

He takes the box. He opens it. He takes out the map. He folds it. He puts it in his pocket.

"Good boy," he says. He claps his hands. The sound is sharp. It cracks the air.

He stands. He is tall. He is strong. He looks at you. He sees your fear. He sees your hate. He does not care.

"Go," he says. "Leave."

You turn. You walk. Your legs are heavy. They are lead. The noise fades. The heat fades. You are outside. The sky is still grey. The smoke is still black.

You walk away. You do not look back. You cannot.

You find a park. It is empty. The grass is dead. The trees are bare. A bench sits in the shade. You sit. Your legs are stiff. You unbuckle your shoes. Your feet are swollen. They are red.

You look at your hands. They are clean. They are empty. You are free. Or so you think.

You are not free. You are a weapon. You have been fired. Now you are the shell.

A boy walks by. He is your age. He wears a cap. He has a smile. It is real. It is bright. He sees you. He stops.

"Hey," he says. "You look sad."

You do not answer. You stare at the ground. A leaf falls. It is brown. It is dry. It breaks.

"My name is Jack," he says. He sits next to you. He is close. He is warm.

"I know," you say. You do not know why you say it. You do not know his name. You are making it up. You are lying.

"Jack," he repeats. "Yeah. That's me."

You laugh. It is a dry sound. It is a cough.

"We should go," he says. "There is a game. We can play."

You do not want to play. You want to run. You want to hide. You want to disappear.

"Okay," you say.

You stand. Your legs wobble. He helps you. His hand is steady. It is strong.

You walk. You walk together. The park blurs. The city looms. The factories rise. The smoke falls.

You are not alone. You have a friend. Or so you think.

You reach the alley. It is dark. It is wet. The walls are high. They close in. The air is stale. It smells of trash. And urine.

Jack stops. He turns. He looks at you. His face changes. The smile vanishes. The eyes harden. They are cold. They are dead.

"Sorry," he says. His voice is flat. It is empty.

He pulls out a knife. It is small. It is sharp. It glints in the dim light.

You do not move. You do not run. You are tired. You are done.

You look at him. You see yourself. You see the boy who handed over the box. You see the boy who walked away. You are the same. You are the ghost.

He swings. The blade flashes. It hits.

Pain. Sharp. Hot. It spreads. It burns.

You fall. You hit the ground. The concrete is hard. It is cold. The blood is warm. It is red. It is yours.

Jack stands over you. He is breathing hard. His chest heaves. He looks at you. He does not feel sorry. He does not feel anything. He is empty. Like you.

"You knew," he says. "You knew I was with him."

You do not answer. You cannot. Your tongue is thick. Your vision blurs. The world spins. The sky falls.

You close your eyes. The darkness comes. It is soft. It is quiet.

You think of the train. The rust. The wool. The heartbeat.

You think of the map. The tear. The tooth.

You think of the father. The ghost. The weight.

You are not free. Freedom is a lie. Freedom is a cost. And you have paid it.

The pain fades. The cold comes. It wraps around you. It holds you. It is gentle. It is kind.

You are still. You are safe.

Jack walks away. His shoes slap the wet ground. Left. Right. Left. Right. The sound fades. The echo dies.

The alley is empty. The leaf falls. It breaks. It is dust.

The rain starts. It is light. It is cold. It washes the blood. It mixes with the dirt. It disappears.

You are gone. You are here. You are nothing.

The city continues. The machines turn. The smoke rises. The war goes on.

No one sees you. No one hears you. No one knows.

You are the secret. You are the sacrifice. You are the price.

And the price is silence.

You lie in the dark. You wait. The cold takes you. The cold frees you.

You are light. You are air. You are gone.

The train whistles. It is far away. It is close. It is now.

You hear it. You hear the rhythm. The heartbeat. The drill.

It stops.

The silence is total. The silence is complete.

You are free.

You are dead.

The rain stops. The sun comes. It is weak. It is pale. It shines on the alley. It shines on the blood. It does not warm it. It only dries it.

The leaf is gone. The dust is gone. The boy is gone.

The city breathes. The city lives. The city eats.

And you are the meal.

You are the fuel.

You are the coal.

Burn.

Burn.

Burn.

The fire consumes. The fire cleans. The fire ends.

Nothing remains.

Nothing is left.

Only the ash.

Only the memory.

Only the pain.

And the pain is yours.

And the pain is everyone's.

And the pain is free.

You let it go. You let it go. You let it go.

The darkness lifts. The light returns.

You are not there. You are not here.

You are everywhere.

You are the wind. You are the dust. You are the ghost.

You walk. You walk on.

The journey is over. The journey begins.

You are free.

You are lost.

You are found.

You are lost.

The end is the beginning. The beginning is the end.

The circle closes. The circle opens.

You are the key. You are the lock. You are the door.

You open it. You close it.

You are gone.

You are here.

The story ends. The story starts.

You listen. You hear the train.

It is coming.

It is here.

It is gone.

You are free.
