The Distant Temple

You hold the seal. It is a slab of black stone, cold as a grave. It is heavy. It is worn. The edges are soft, rounded by the friction of your own obsession. You have carried it for three years. Three years since the Council exiled you. Three years since you broke the code.

The cell is small. It is white. The walls are smooth. There is no door you can see. There is only the window. A slit of glass, high up. It shows the sky. The sky is grey. It is always grey.

You are a prisoner. You are a saint. You do not know which is true. You only know the weight in your hand. The seal is the proof. The seal is the key. The seal is the sin.

"Is it still there?"

The voice comes from the corner. It is low. It is dry. It is Thomas.

You do not look up. You keep your eyes on the stone. You trace the groove in the center. A spiral. A path inward.

"Always," you say. "It never fades."

Thomas laughs. It is a dry sound. Like paper tearing. "It must. Everything fades here. The light. The air. The self."

"Mine does not."

"Yours does. That is the trouble."

He steps forward. He is thin. His clothes are rags. He is an ally. Or so you think. He is the only one who speaks to you. The others are ghosts. The others are silence.

"Show me," Thomas says.

"No."

"Show me."

"I cannot."

"You can. You have the power. You have the will. Show me."

You hesitate. Your hand trembles. The stone is warm now. It pulses. It beats like a heart. You look at him. His eyes are dark. His eyes are hungry.

"Look," you whisper.

You hold out the stone. You close your fingers around it. You squeeze. You push.

The light changes. The white walls turn black. The grey sky turns red. The air tastes of iron.

Thomas stares. He does not blink. He smiles. It is a small smile. It is a cruel smile.

"It is not a key," he says.

"What?"

"It is a lock."

You pull your hand back. The stone is cold again. The walls are white again. The sky is grey again.

"What do you mean?" you ask.

"I mean you are not holding the door," Thomas says. "You are holding the bolt."

"Then how do I open it?"

"You stop holding it."

"That is impossible."

"Why?"

"Because I need it. I need to save them. I need to break the system. I need to prove I was right."

Thomas shakes his head. "You are not right. You are just angry. You are just afraid."

"I am not afraid."

"You are. You are afraid that if you let go, you are nothing. You are afraid that if you let go, the seal disappears. And if the seal disappears, you disappear."

You look at the stone. It is dull. It is dead. It is just a rock.

"Who are you?" you ask.

Thomas steps closer. He is very close now. You can smell his breath. It is stale. It is old.

"I am the one who made the seal," he says.

You recoil. You fall back against the wall. Your heart hammers. Your mouth is dry.

"No," you say. "No, you are the prisoner. You are the victim."

"I am the architect," Thomas says. "I built this place. I built the rules. I built the seal. I made you hold it."

"Why?"

"Because I needed a test. I needed to know if devotion could beat truth. I needed to know if love could blind a man."

"Love?" you cry. "I love the cause. I love the truth. I love the people outside."

"You love the idea," Thomas says. "You love the purity. You love the suffering. You love the pain because it makes you feel special. It makes you feel chosen."

"I am not special."

"You are. That is the trap. You think you are special. You think you are the hero. You think you are the savior. But you are just a mirror."

He points at the stone in your hand.

"Look at it," he says.

You look. You see your face in the black stone. It is distorted. It is twisted. It is ugly.

"It is your face," Thomas says. "It has always been your face. The seal is not a tool. It is a mask. You have been wearing it. You have been hiding behind it. You have been running from yourself."

"I am not running."

"You are. You are running from the fact that you are part of the system. You are part of the machine. You are the gear that grinds. You are the hand that strikes."

"No," you say. "I am the rebel. I am the one who broke the code."

"You broke the code because you wanted to be seen. You broke the code because you wanted to be known. You broke the code because you were lonely."

The words hit you. They hit you hard. They hit you deep. You gasp. You feel the floor beneath you. It is solid. It is real.

"Let go," Thomas says.

"I cannot."

"You can. You must. If you do not let go, you die. If you do not let go, you stay here. Forever."

You look at the stone. You feel the weight. You feel the cold. You feel the pulse.

It is not a pulse. It is a lie.

You close your eyes. You breathe in. You breathe out. You think of the people outside. You think of the world. You think of the freedom.

You open your eyes.

You drop the stone.

It falls. It hits the floor. It does not break. It does not shatter. It just lies there. It is still black. It is still heavy. But it is no longer in your hand.

You are empty.

You are light.

Thomas smiles. He is no longer cruel. He is sad. He is tired.

"It is done," he says.

"What happens now?" you ask.

"Now you see," he says.

The walls vanish. The floor vanishes. The window vanishes.

You are standing in a field. It is green. It is vast. The sky is blue. The sun is warm.

You are alone.

You look down. Your hands are empty. Your hands are free.

You take a step. You take another step.

You are walking.

You are walking away.

You are walking into the light.

But the light is blinding. The light is painful. The light is loud.

You hear a voice. It is not Thomas. It is your own voice. It is echoing. It is repeating.

"You are nothing. You are nothing. You are nothing."

You stop. You stand still. You feel the grass beneath your feet. It is sharp. It is wet.

You look at your hands. They are shaking. They are trembling.

You realize the truth.

The seal was not in the stone. The seal was in the mind. The prison was not the cell. The prison was the ego.

You did not break the system. You did not save the world. You did not prove anything.

You only let go.

And letting go was the hardest thing you ever did.

You look up. The sky is still blue. The sun is still warm. But you feel cold. You feel hollow. You feel empty.

You are free.

And freedom is a heavy burden.

You turn around. You walk back.

You walk back to the cell.

You walk back to the stone.

You pick it up.

You hold it tight.

You are the prisoner. You are the saint. You are the key. You are the lock.

You are the story.

And the story never ends.

It just wears down.

It just fades.

It just becomes dust.

You whisper a prayer. You whisper a lie. You whisper a truth.

"I am here," you say.

The stone is cold.

The stone is warm.

The stone is you.
