The Distant Ghost

The house is quiet.

Too quiet.

You stand in the hallway.

Dust motes dance.

Sunlight cuts the air.

Sharp lines.

Hard shadows.

You hold the key.

It burns your palm.

Cold iron.

Heavy.

You are not supposed to be here.

Not yet.

The lock clicks.

A small sound.

Loud.

You step inside.

The smell hits you.

Old paper.

Wet wood.

Grief.

You are a prisoner.

The walls are bars.

The silence is the guard.

You walk forward.

Your feet make no sound.

Socks on hardwood.

Soft steps.

The living room.

Empty chairs.

Dust on the arms.

A clock on the wall.

Stopped at three.

You look at it.

Three o’clock.

The time of the call.

The time of the news.

You look away.

Your hands shake.

You grip the key tighter.

It cuts your skin.

You don’t care.

Pain is real.

Pain is here.

The rest is ghost.

You move to the kitchen.

The tiles are cold.

You trace the grout.

Line by line.

You remember the tiles.

They were blue.

White now.

Faded.

Your mother used to stand here.

She would hum.

A song you forgot.

Now you hum it back.

Wrong notes.

Broken melody.

The door to the garden is locked.

From the inside.

You check the handle.

Stiff.

Rusted.

You push.

It gives.

A creak.

Metal on metal.

You step out.

The garden is overgrown.

Weeds eat the stone.

The roses are dead.

Brown stems.

Thorns like teeth.

You see the shed.

Small.

Wooden.

Paint peeling.

Blue paint.

Like the tiles.

You walk to it.

Your heart beats fast.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

You stop.

Breathe.

In.

Out.

The door is ajar.

A gap of darkness.

You push it open.

Inside is dark.

Dusty.

You see a chair.

Wooden.

Scratched.

On the seat.

A package.

Wrapped in cloth.

Brown paper.

Tied with string.

You pick it up.

Heavy.

You untie the string.

Slowly.

The paper falls away.

You see the object.

A box.

Wooden.

Carved.

It looks like a house.

A miniature house.

Like this one.

But smaller.

Perfect.

You open the lid.

Inside.

Letters.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Stacked high.

You pick one up.

The paper is soft.

Yellowed.

You read the handwriting.

Your mother’s.

Dear Tom,

The news came today.

They say he is gone.

I do not believe it.

I wait.

I wait for the knock.

I wait for the sound.

I wait for the lie.

You put the letter down.

You pick another.

Dear Tom,

The house is empty.

But I am not.

I am in the walls.

I am in the floor.

I am in the air.

You breathe.

You feel it.

The presence.

You read another.

Dear Tom,

They call you a traitor.

They call you a coward.

I call you my son.

I call you home.

You read another.

Dear Tom,

The war is over.

The peace is bad.

The silence is loud.

I forgive you.

I always did.

You drop the letters.

They fall.

Scattered.

Like snow.

Like ash.

You look at the box.

The miniature house.

It is a mirror.

This house.

Your house.

The prison.

The tomb.

The sanctuary.

You understand.

The twist.

The key.

It is not for the front door.

It is for the shed.

It is for the box.

No.

The key is for the truth.

The truth is in the box.

You have been holding it.

For years.

In your mind.

In your heart.

You have been the prisoner.

Not the house.

Not the war.

Your guilt.

Your shame.

You thought you betrayed her.

You thought you abandoned her.

You ran.

You fled.

You left.

You were wrong.

She knew.

She always knew.

She wrote it down.

She kept it here.

Safe.

Hidden.

Waiting for you.

To come back.

To read.

To know.

To be free.

You look at the garden.

The weeds.

The dead roses.

The shed.

It is not a cage.

It is a shelter.

You are not a criminal.

You are a son.

You are a son who came home.

Late.

But home.

You pick up the box.

You carry it inside.

The house feels different.

Lighter.

The air is thinner.

You place the box on the table.

The stopped clock.

Three o’clock.

You look at the key.

You put it in the box.

With the letters.

With the truth.

You close the lid.

You leave it there.

You walk to the window.

The sun is setting.

Orange light.

Red sky.

You look out.

The street is empty.

The cars are gone.

The people are gone.

Only you.

And the house.

And the past.

You take a breath.

Deep.

Full.

You let it out.

Slow.

Long.

The weight is gone.

The ghost is gone.

The ghost was you.

The ghost was your fear.

The ghost was your silence.

Now you speak.

To no one.

To everyone.

To the wind.

I am here.

I am home.

I am free.

The words hang in the air.

Small.

Quiet.

But real.

You turn around.

The house is dark.

The shadows are long.

You walk to the door.

You open it.

The night air is cold.

Fresh.

You step out.

You close the door.

You do not lock it.

You walk down the path.

The grass is wet.

Cold on your feet.

You walk to the street.

You look back.

The house stands.

Silent.

Still.

But not empty.

It holds the truth.

It holds the love.

It holds the peace.

You turn away.

You walk on.

The road is long.

The night is dark.

But you are not alone.

You carry the weight.

But it is light.

You carry the memory.

But it is warm.

You carry the forgiveness.

And it is enough.

The wind blows.

It whispers.

You smile.

A small smile.

Sad.

But true.

You keep walking.

Into the dark.

Into the future.

Into the life.

The story ends.

But the life begins.

You are free.

You are free.

You are free.

The house remains.

The ghost remains.

But you are gone.

And that is good.

That is right.

That is life.

You walk.

The stars come out.

Bright.

Cold.

Beautiful.

You look up.

You see them.

You see the light.

You see the way.

You keep walking.

The end.

The beginning.

The same.

The different.

The same.

You breathe.

You live.

You are here.

Now.

Always.

The story is done.

The silence is gone.

The voice is here.

Your voice.

My voice.

Our voice.

It echoes.

In the dark.

In the light.

In the heart.

It is enough.

It is all.

It is everything.

You stop.

You stand.

You look up.

The moon is full.

Bright.

White.

You feel it.

The pull.

The draw.

The call.

You answer.

With your life.

With your breath.

With your soul.

You walk on.

The night is deep.

The stars are high.

The road is clear.

You are free.

The end.
