The Distant Threshold

The rain on the slate roof was a rhythmic, mechanical click. I counted the drops. One, two, three. I was a man who measured time in seconds and errors in decimals. My name is Arthur Pendelton. I am a linguist. I study the dead languages of the north, the ones that have no living speakers, the ones that exist only in stone and silence. I live in Oakhaven, a town that sits in a bowl of hills, a place where the fog comes in at night and stays until the sun burns it away. It is a small world. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone knows my habits. They know I walk the perimeter at midnight. They know I do not speak to them. They do not know I am afraid.

The fear was not of the dark. It was of the sound.

It started in the winter. A low hum. It came from the well at the center of the village square. The well was dry. It had been dry for a hundred years. But I heard it. A vibration in the floorboards of my study. A tremor in my teeth. I told myself it was the pipes. I told myself it was the wind. I am a rational man. I believe in cause and effect. I believe in data.

But the sound did not stop.

It changed. It became a voice. Not words, exactly. More like the shape of words. The cadence of a question asked and never answered. I stopped sleeping. I stopped eating. I sat in my chair by the fire, my eyes open, my hands trembling. The sound grew louder. It was not in the air. It was in my bones. It was in the marrow.

I went to the well. I went at night. The fog was thick as wool. I stood at the edge. The stone was cold. I looked down. There was no bottom. Just darkness. And the sound. It was coming from below. It was calling me.

I went to the town council. I sat in the back row. The council was five men. They wore dark suits. They spoke in low voices. I raised my hand.

"May I speak?" I asked.

The chair, a man named Mr. Thorne, looked at me. His eyes were flat. They were the eyes of a man who has seen too much and learned nothing.

"You are Mr. Pendelton," he said. It was not a question.

"I am," I said.

"You have been hearing the well," he said.

"How do you know that?" I asked.

We all know, he said. It is the price of living here.

I stood up. My legs shook. "It is not a price," I said. "It is a phenomenon. I have studied the acoustics of this valley. The stone is porous. It traps sound. It amplifies it. It is a natural echo chamber. There is no spirit. There is no ghost. There is only physics."

The room went silent. Mr. Thorne smiled. It was a thin smile. It did not reach his eyes.

"Physics," he said. "Yes. That is what you think."

"Then what do you think?" I asked.

"We think you are wrong," he said.

I left the room. I walked home in the rain. The sound was louder now. It was in my ears. It was in my head. It was a drill, boring into my skull.

I went back to the well. I brought a tape recorder. I brought a microphone. I set them up. I recorded the night. I played it back.

There was no sound.

Just the rain. Just the wind.

I deleted the tape. I was wrong. I was delusional. I was a man who had stared into the abyss for too long. The abyss had looked back. And it had laughed.

I stopped going to the well. I stayed in my house. I read my books. I wrote my papers. I tried to forget.

But the sound did not forget.

It came to me in the morning. It came to me in the afternoon. It was in the water I drank. It was in the food I ate. It was in my blood.

I called for a doctor. A doctor came. He was a young man. He looked at me with pity. He checked my pulse. He checked my eyes.

"Are you in pain?" he asked.

"No," I said.

"Are you hearing voices?" he asked.

"No," I said.

"Then what is wrong?" he asked.

"I don't know," I said.

He gave me pills. He said they would help me sleep. I took them. I slept. I dreamed of the well. I dreamed of the water rising. I dreamed of the sound becoming a scream.

I woke up. The sound was gone.

For a week, it was gone. I felt light. I felt free. I walked in the park. I spoke to the neighbors. I smiled.

Then it came back.

It came back with a force that knocked me off my feet. It was not a hum. It was a roar. It was the sound of the earth cracking. It was the sound of time breaking.

I ran to the well. I ran as fast as I could. My lungs burned. My legs screamed. I reached the edge. I looked down.

The water was rising.

It was black. It was thick. It was moving. It was coming up.

I screamed. I screamed for help. No one came. The town was empty. The houses were dark. The streets were wet.

The water touched my feet. It was hot. It was boiling.

I fell.

I fell into the well.

I did not die.

I sank. I sank into the dark. I sank into the sound.

I opened my eyes.

I was in my study.

I was sitting in my chair.

The fire was burning. The rain was on the roof.

I looked at my hands. They were dry.

I looked at the clock. It was midnight.

I had been in the well for an hour.

I stood up. My legs were weak. I walked to the window. I looked out. The town was there. The houses were there. The fog was there.

But something was different.

The sound was gone.

It was not gone from the world. It was gone from me.

I understood then.

I had not been hearing the well.

I had been the well.

I was the source. I was the sound. I was the thing that the stone amplified. I was the thing that the fog trapped. I was the thing that the town feared.

I had been trying to solve a mystery. I had been trying to find the answer.

The answer was me.

I was the ghost. I was the spirit. I was the thing that lived in the dark.

I laughed. I laughed until I cried.

It was a funny story. It was a stupid story.

I was a scholar. I was a man of reason. And I was a monster.

I went to the mirror. I looked at my face.

My face was old. It was wrinkled. It was tired.

But my eyes were bright.

My eyes were the eyes of a man who has seen the truth.

I closed the mirror. I sat down. I picked up my pen.

I began to write.

I wrote about the well. I wrote about the sound. I wrote about the fear.

I wrote it all down.

I wrote it for the next man.

I wrote it so that he would know.

I wrote it so that he would not be afraid.

But I knew he would be afraid.

Because the sound does not stop.

It just changes.

It just moves.

It just waits.

I put the pen down.

I looked at the window.

The rain had stopped.

The sun was rising.

The fog was lifting.

The town was waking up.

I could see the people.

They were walking to work.

They were carrying their bags.

They were carrying their lives.

They did not know.

They did not know what I was.

They did not know what I had done.

They did not know that I was the source.

They did not know that I was the sound.

I smiled.

I smiled at them.

I smiled at the world.

I was free.

I was trapped.

I was the well.
