The Pale Bridge
The blade bit deep. I felt the hot spray of it. It was not my blood. It was his. The man fell. He looked at me with wide, confused eyes. His hands were empty. I held the sword tight. My knuckles were white. The ground was wet. Mud sucked at our boots. We were in the woods. The trees were tall and dark. The sky was gray. Rain began to fall. It was cold. It was wet. It was right.
"Stay down," I said. My voice was steady. It did not shake. I do not shake. I am the Law. I am the Shield. I am the hand that holds the edge.
He did not move. He breathed. It was a rattling sound. Like a dog with its throat cut. He looked at the sky. He looked at the trees. He looked at me. There was no hate in his face. There was only fear. There was only loss. I felt a pull in my chest. It was a tug. It was a hook. I pulled it free. I stepped over him. I walked on.
I am Thomas Bradshaw. I am the Captain of the Guard. I have served for twenty years. I have kept the peace. I have broken the lawless. I have held the line. The line is thin. The line is blood. I walk the line.
I walked until the trees thinned. The road appeared. It was a straight line of gray stone. It cut through the green. It was a scar on the land. I followed it. My body hurt. My arm ached. The wound was in his side. I had hit him there. I had hit him true. I had hit him hard. I felt the vibration in my arm. It lasted for a long time. It lasted until the sun came out. The sun was pale. It was weak. It did not warm me. It only showed me the dirt.
I reached the bridge. It was old. The stones were worn. The water below was black. It moved slowly. It moved like oil. I stopped. I looked down. I saw my face. It was not my face. It was a stranger’s face. It was a face I had worn before. It was a face I would wear again. It was the face of the Judge. It was the face of the Executioner. It was the face of the Victim. They were all one. They were all me.
I touched the bridge. The stone was cold. It was smooth. It was hard. It did not care. It did not feel. It only was. I had built this bridge. I had laid these stones. I had carried the mortar. I had mixed the sand. I had worked for the Crown. I had worked for the King. I had worked for Order. Order is a heavy thing. It weighs on your shoulders. It weighs on your soul. It is a chain. It is a shackle. It is a cage. But it is also a roof. It keeps the rain out. It keeps the wolves away. It is necessary. It is cruel. It is both.
I sat on the stone. I put my head in my hands. I waited. I waited for the pain to stop. It did not stop. It changed. It became a dull ache. It became a memory. It became a fact. I am tired. I am so tired. I have been walking for so long. I have been fighting for so long. I have been judging for so long. I have been deciding who lives and who dies. I have been deciding who is guilty and who is innocent. I have been wrong. I have been right. I have been both. I have been neither.
A sound came from behind me. It was the sound of boots. It was the sound of many boots. They were heavy. They were loud. They were coming up the hill. I stood. I turned. They were coming. They were my men. They were the Guard. They were the Law. They were the Shield. They were me.
I looked at them. They looked at me. They did not speak. They did not need to speak. We knew each other. We knew the game. We knew the rules. We knew the cost. We knew the price. We paid it every day. We paid it with blood. We paid it with bone. We paid it with soul.
Captain James Whitmore walked to the front. He was old. His face was gray. His eyes were blue. They were cold. He looked at me. He looked at the bridge. He looked at the dead man. He did not see the dead man. He saw the result. He saw the order. He saw the peace.
"Thomas," he said. His voice was soft. It was quiet. It was final.
"James," I said. I did not bow. I did not salute. I just stood. I was tired. I was done.
"We found the body," James said. He did not look at me. He looked at the water. "It was not a bandit."
I knew. I had known. I had seen the face. I had seen the eyes. I had seen the fear. I had seen the truth. I had known before I struck. I had known because I was the mirror. I was the reflection. I was the other. I had killed myself. I had killed the part of me that could still feel. I had killed the part of me that could still doubt. I had killed the part of me that could still love.
"It was a peasant," James said. "A farmer. He had a hoe. He had a sack of grain. He was going to market."
The grain. The sack. The hoe. They were in my mind. They were clear. They were sharp. They were real. I had seen them. I had seen the hoe in his hand. I had thought it was a sword. I had thought the sack was a bag of coins. I had thought the market was a raid. I had thought the farmer was a thief. I had thought the peace was under threat. I had thought the Law was under attack. I was wrong. I was so wrong.
"Who sent him?" James asked. He turned to me. His eyes were hard. "Who sent him to cross the bridge?"
No one sent him. He was alone. He was free. He was just a man. He was just a life. He was just a breath. He was just a name. I did not know his name. I will never know his name. I will only know his blood. I will only know his death. I will only know my guilt.
"I sent him," I said. My voice was low. It was flat. It was dead. "I sent him. I was the threat. I was the raid. I was the thief. I was the enemy."
James did not move. He did not blink. He just looked at me. He waited. He waited for the end. He waited for the fall.
"I am the Law," I said. "And the Law is blind. The Law is deaf. The Law is dumb. The Law is dead. I am the Law. And I am dead."
James reached for his sword. It was a slow move. It was a careful move. It was a precise move. I did not move. I did not flinch. I did not fight. I let him come. I let him draw. I let him aim. I let him strike. I was ready. I was waiting. I was willing. I was free.
The sword came down. It hit my chest. It did not cut. It did not pierce. It stopped. It bounced. It rang. It was like a bell. It was like a song. It was like a cry. I looked down. I saw the sword. I saw my hand. I was holding it. I was holding the sword. I was holding the blade. I was holding my own death. I was holding my own life. I was holding the truth.
I let go. The sword fell. It clattered on the stone. It rolled. It stopped. It lay there. It was just a piece of metal. It was just a tool. It was just a thing. I picked it up. I held it out. I gave it to James.
"Take it," I said. "Take the Law. Take the Shield. Take the Edge. Take the Weight. I cannot carry it. I cannot hold it. I cannot be it. I am just a man. I am just a body. I am just a breath. I am just a name. Thomas Bradshaw. I was a farmer. I was a father. I was a son. I was a lover. I was a friend. I was a human. I was alive. I am no longer the Law. I am no longer the Judge. I am no longer the Executioner. I am just Thomas. I am just alive. I am just here."
James took the sword. He held it. He looked at me. He looked at the bridge. He looked at the dead man. He looked at the sky. He looked at the rain. He looked at the world. He saw it. He saw it all. He saw the cruelty. He saw the chaos. He saw the pain. He saw the loss. He saw the truth.
He sheathed the sword. It was a small sound. It was a soft sound. It was a final sound. He walked away. He walked up the hill. He walked away from the bridge. He walked away from the dead man. He walked away from me. He walked into the mist. He disappeared.
I was alone. I was on the bridge. I was on the stone. I was by the water. The rain had stopped. The sun was out. It was bright. It was warm. It was good. I looked down. I saw the water. I saw the black. I saw the flow. I saw the time. I saw the end. I saw the beginning. I saw the circle. I saw the wheel. I saw the life. I saw the death. I saw the peace. I saw the war. I saw the Law. I saw the Man. I saw the Truth.
I stood up. I walked off the bridge. I walked into the woods. I walked into the green. I walked into the dark. I walked into the light. I walked into the world. I was alone. I was free. I was alive. I was human. I was Thomas. I was the bridge. I was the stone. I was the water. I was the rain. I was the sun. I was the sky. I was the earth. I was the air. I was the breath. I was the life. I was the death. I was the peace. I was the war. I was the Law. I was the Man. I was the Truth. I was the End. I was the Beginning. I was the Whole. I was the One. I was the All. I was the Nothing. I was the Everything. I was the Here. I was the Now. I was the Always. I was the Never. I was the Forever. I was the Instant. I was the Moment. I was the Second. I was the Minute. I was the Hour. I was the Day. I was the Night. I was the Year. I was the Age. I was the Time. I was the Eternity. I was the Infinity. I was the Void. I was the Full. I was the Empty. I was the Full. I was the Empty. I was the Full. I was the Empty.
I stopped. I breathed. I inhaled. I exhaled. I was here. I was now. I was alive. I was free. I was Thomas. I was the man.
I walked. I walked on. The trees closed in. The path was narrow. The path was dark. The path was long. I walked. I walked. I walked. I was alone. I was free. I was alive. I was human. I was Thomas. I was the man.
I stopped. I looked up. The sky was blue. It was clear. It was bright. It was beautiful. It was real. It was true. It was now. It was here. It was me. I smiled. I closed my eyes. I felt the sun. I felt the warmth. I felt the life. I felt the peace. I felt the end. I felt the beginning. I felt the whole. I felt the one. I felt the all. I felt the nothing. I felt the everything. I felt the here. I felt the now. I felt the always. I felt the never. I felt the forever. I felt the instant. I felt the moment. I felt the second. I felt the minute. I felt the hour. I felt the day. I felt the night. I felt the year. I felt the age. I felt the time. I felt the eternity. I felt the infinity. I felt the void. I felt the full. I felt the empty.
I opened my eyes. I walked. I walked on. I was alive. I was free. I was Thomas. I was the man.
