The Distant Threshold

The mud was thick and black and tasted of iron, a sludge that sucked at Thomas Bradshaw’s boots with a hungry, wet persistence, and he knew, with the cold clarity that often precedes death, that he was not fighting the men in the grey tunics but the very earth itself which sought to pull him down into the dark, into the place where his father had gone and where he knew, with a terror that had no name, that he would follow. He pushed forward, his sword, a heavy thing of folded steel that had belonged to his grandfather and before him, slipping in his sweaty grip, and he swung it not at the enemy but at the air, a frantic, rhythmic chopping that was less a battle cry and more the sound of a man trying to beat the wind back from a fire. The world was a blur of green and brown and the dull red of blood, and the air was thick with the smell of pine resin and rotting leaves and the metallic tang of fear, and Thomas could not tell where the forest ended and the dream began, for the trees had faces, their bark wrinkled like old men’s skin, and their branches reached out with long, spindly fingers to grasp at his tunic, to pull him deeper into the thicket where the shadows were not empty but full of things that whispered his name in a voice that was too close, too intimate, too much like his mother’s lullaby. He remembered the court, the high chamber with its stained glass windows that showed the saints weeping, and the Lord’s face, cold and distant, as they told him he was tainted, that his blood was not pure, that he must go to the edge of the known world to cleanse himself, and he had believed them, he had believed that if he walked far enough, if he bled enough, if he died in the right way, he would be forgiven, that there was a threshold beyond the trees where the law did not reach, where he could be just a man, just a son, just a brother, but now, standing in the muck with his sword raised and his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, he understood that there was no threshold, only the endless, looping path, only the wheel that turned and turned and brought him back to the same muddy ditch, the same black mud, the same iron taste, and the realization hit him with the force of a physical blow, a blow that staggered him back against the trunk of an ancient oak, and he slid down, his back against the rough bark, his sword clattering to the ground, and he looked up at the sky, which was not blue but a swirling vortex of grey and green, and he saw his father, standing in the center of the vortex, holding a lantern that burned with a cold, white light, and he saw his mother, beside him, her face pale and still, and he saw himself, as a child, standing before them, waiting to be sent away, waiting to be cast out, waiting to begin the cycle again. The men in the grey tunics were gone, or perhaps they had never been there at all, perhaps they were only the shadows of his own guilt, the manifestations of the fear that had driven him from his home, from his family, from the life he had been meant to live, and the only thing that remained was the tree, the great oak, its roots twisting into the earth, its branches reaching up to touch the sky, a living thing, a breathing thing, a thing that had stood there for a thousand years and would stand there for a thousand more, and Thomas realized that he was not the hunter, he was not the soldier, he was not the sinner, he was the tree, he was the roots, he was the bark, he was the leaves, and the pain that had been in his chest for so long, the pain of being rejected, the pain of being other, the pain of being alone, was not his pain, it was the pain of the earth, the pain of the roots digging into the stone, the pain of the branches breaking in the storm, and it was a pain that had no end, a pain that was part of the design, part of the order, part of the great, slow, inevitable turn of the world. He closed his eyes, and he felt the mud on his face, the cold on his skin, the weight of his body on the ground, and he felt, for the first time, a sense of peace, a sense of acceptance, a sense that he had finally arrived, not at a place, but at a state, a state of being, a state of becoming, a state of letting go, and he opened his eyes, and the vortex was gone, and the sky was blue, and the sun was shining, and the men in the grey tunics were standing around him, their swords lowered, their faces soft, and one of them, a young man with eyes the color of the mud, knelt down and picked up Thomas’s sword, and he held it out to him, and Thomas took it, and he felt the weight of it, the weight of the years, the weight of the blood, the weight of the love, and he knew that he would fight, he would bleed, he would die, and he would wake up again, in the mud, with the taste of iron on his tongue, and he would fight, and he would bleed, and he would die, and he would wake up again, and it would be the same, it would always be the same, and that was the tragedy, that was the beauty, that was the truth, and he stood up, and he walked forward, into the light, into the dark, into the loop, into the wheel, into the endless, aching, beautiful, terrible, necessary, eternal turn.

The forest was quiet, a heavy, suffocating quiet that pressed against his eardrums, and the only sound was the drip of water from the leaves, a slow, rhythmic tapping that sounded like a heartbeat, or perhaps like a clock, counting down the seconds until the next shift, the next turn, the next death, and Thomas walked, his boots sinking into the soft earth, leaving no tracks, for the earth swallowed them, and the trees watched him, their leaves rustling in a wind that he could not feel, and he walked, and he walked, and he walked, and he did not know how long it had been, an hour, a day, a year, a lifetime, for time was a fluid thing here, a thing that could be stretched and squeezed, bent and broken, and he walked, and the path was familiar, too familiar, he knew every root, every stone, every patch of moss, and he knew that he had been here before, not once, not twice, but a thousand times, and he knew that he would be here again, and the thought did not frighten him, it did not anger him, it did not sadden him, it simply was, like the sun rising, like the moon setting, like the tide coming in, and he accepted it, he accepted the loop, he accepted the pain, he accepted the love, for the love was the only thing that made the loop bearable, the only thing that gave the pain meaning, the only thing that kept him from breaking, and he thought of his mother, her hands in the dough, her face in the light, her voice in his ear, whispering, stay, stay, stay, and he knew that he would never stay, he would never rest, he would never be still, for stillness was death, and death was only a moment, a blink, a breath, before the next beginning, the next turn, the next fight, and he walked, and the trees opened before him, and the light came through, a shaft of gold, a beam of hope, a promise of life, and he stepped into it, and the pain left him, and the fear left him, and the guilt left him, and he was light, he was air, he was spirit, and he flew, he soared, he rose, and he saw the world below, the fields, the rivers, the mountains, the cities, the people, the lives, the deaths, the beginnings, the endings, and he saw himself, in a thousand places, in a thousand times, in a thousand forms, fighting, bleeding, dying, waking, fighting, bleeding, dying, waking, and he saw the thread, the golden thread that connected them all, the thread of love, the thread of pain, the thread of life, and he knew that he was not alone, he was never alone, for the thread was everywhere, it was in the air, it was in the earth, it was in the water, it was in the fire, it was in the blood, it was in the bone, it was in the soul, and it was in him, and he was in it, and they were one, and the one was the many, and the many were the one, and the one was the all, and the all was the nothing, and the nothing was the all, and the all was the one, and the one was the nothing, and the nothing was the all, and the loop closed, and the loop opened, and the loop turned, and the loop turned, and the loop turned.

Thomas stood in the field, the grass high around his knees, the sun warm on his face, and he felt the wind in his hair, and he smelled the flowers, the sweet, heavy scent of lilies and roses, and he heard the birds, the bright, clear song of wrens and larks, and he felt the life in him, the strong, steady pulse of his heart, the rush of his blood, the fire in his veins, and he was alive, he was here, he was now, and it was enough, it was more than enough, it was everything, and he looked up, and the sky was vast, and blue, and infinite, and he breathed in, and he breathed out, and he let go, he let go of the sword, he let go of the fight, he let go of the loop, he let go of the pain, he let go of the love, and he let go of himself, and he fell, he fell into the earth, he fell into the roots, he fell into the dark, and he slept, and he dreamed, and he woke, and he was in the mud, and the taste of iron was on his tongue, and the men in the grey tunics were there, and he stood up, and he picked up his sword, and he walked, and he fought, and he bled, and he died, and he woke, and he was in the mud, and the taste of iron was on his tongue, and the men in the grey tunics were there,
