The Faded Root
The stone cracks.
You hear it first. A dry snap. Like a knuckle popping in a silent room. Then the sound widens. A groan. Dust falls.
You are standing in the center of the Hall of Whispers. The ceiling is high. Too high. It stretches up into a dark that feels heavy. It feels wet. The air is cold. It tastes of copper and old paper.
You are not supposed to be here.
The map says this place does not exist. The map says the palace is a ruin. The map says the walls are gone. But the walls are here. They are thick. They are gray. They are breathing.
You touch the wall.
It is warm.
It is wrong.
Stone should be cold. Stone should be dead. This stone has a pulse. You can feel it under your fingertips. Thump. Thump. Thump.
You pull your hand back. Your skin is red. It burns. You look at your palm. A mark is forming. A black line. It looks like a root. It twists across your skin. It is not a scar. It is a vein.
You look up.
The crack in the ceiling is wider. A piece of slate falls. It hits the floor. It shatters. You flinch. You do not move. You wait.
Nothing else falls.
You take a step forward.
The floor is uneven. Your shoes slip. You catch yourself. You breathe. In. Out.
You are here to find the Heart.
The Heart is a thing of legend. It is said to be the source of the palace’s power. It is said to be a living root. A white root. It grows in the center of the Hall. It feeds the walls. It feeds the stones. It keeps the palace standing.
But the Heart is dying.
You know this. You have known it for three days. The palace is crumbling. The towers are leaning. The gates are sticking. The servants are gone. They left in the night. They did not look back.
You are the only one left.
You are the Architect. Or you were. Before the funds ran out. Before the contracts were broken. Before the trust was lost.
You came here to fix it. You came with tools. You came with plans. You came with hope.
Now you come with fear.
You walk deeper into the Hall. The shadows move. They are not your shadows. They are long. They are thin. They slide along the floor like water.
You see a figure.
It is standing by the far wall.
It is tall. It is thin. It wears a robe of gray cloth. Its face is hidden. You cannot see its eyes. You cannot see its mouth.
It does not move.
You stop.
Your heart beats fast. It beats loud. You can hear it in your ears. You can feel it in your chest. It is a drum. It is a trap.
You speak.
"Who are you?"
Your voice is small. It is weak. It disappears in the dark.
The figure does not answer.
You speak again.
"I am here to help."
The figure turns.
It is not a person.
It is a shadow. A solid shadow. It has the shape of a man, but it has no detail. It is just dark. It is just absence.
It points at you.
It points at your hand.
You look down. The black root on your palm has grown. It has spread. It is up your wrist. It is up your arm. It is cold. It is painful. It feels like ice water in your veins.
You try to pull it out. You try to scratch it off. You use your other hand. You dig at the skin. You break the skin. Blood wells up. The blood is black.
It is not your blood.
The shadow laughs.
The sound is not a laugh. It is a crack. It is the sound of stone breaking. It is the sound of your bones breaking.
You fall to your knees.
The pain is sharp. It is bright. It is white. You cannot stand. You cannot move. You are pinned to the floor.
The shadow walks toward you.
It does not walk. It glides. It is silent. It is fast.
It stops in front of you.
It crouches down.
It is close. You can smell it. It smells of earth. It smells of rot. It smells of old time.
It puts a hand on your face.
Its hand is cold. It is hard. It is stone.
You try to scream.
No sound comes out.
Your mouth is full of dust. Your throat is full of dirt. You cannot breathe. You cannot speak.
The shadow leans in.
It whispers.
"You are the root."
You do not understand.
You are the Architect. You are the builder. You are the fixer. You are not the root.
The shadow tilts its head.
"Its name is Margot," it says.
The name hits you.
It is a shock. It is a blow.
Margot.
Your sister.
She died ten years ago.
She died in the fire. She died in the old house. She died before you built the palace. She died before you became the Architect. She died before you forgot her.
You look at your hand.
The black root is moving. It is crawling. It is seeking.
You remember.
You remember the fire. You remember the heat. You remember the smoke. You remember her hand. You remember her face.
You remember you locked the door.
You remember you locked the door to keep the fire out. You locked it to keep the smoke out. You locked it to keep her safe.
But you were wrong.
The fire was inside.
The smoke was inside.
She was inside.
You did not open the door. You were afraid. You were afraid of the heat. You were afraid of the dark. You were afraid of the truth.
You walked away.
You left her.
You built the palace to forget. You built it to hide. You built it to cover the hole in your heart. You built it with stone because stone does not bleed. Stone does not cry. Stone does not burn.
But stone cracks.
Stone breaks.
Stone dies.
The shadow stands up.
It is not a shadow.
It is Margot.
She is not dead.
She is the root.
She is the thing that holds the palace up. She is the thing that feeds the walls. She is the thing that keeps the dark away.
She has been here for ten years.
She has been waiting for you.
She is not angry.
She is tired.
Her face is clear now. She is not a monster. She is a woman. She is old. She is thin. Her hair is white. Her eyes are black.
She looks at you.
She does not judge you.
She does not hate you.
She looks at you with pity.
She looks at you with love.
It is a primal love. It is a blind love. It is a love that does not ask for forgiveness. It is a love that does not expect to be saved.
It is a love that only wants to be seen.
You look at her.
You look at the root on your arm.
You understand.
You are not the Architect.
You are the crack.
You are the weakness. You are the flaw in the design. You are the place where the water gets in. You are the place where the light gets in.
You cannot fix the palace.
You cannot fix her.
You cannot fix yourself.
The palace is falling.
The ceiling is falling.
You hear the sound.
It is a roar. It is a thunder. It is the sound of the world ending.
The stones fall.
They fall around you. They fall on you. They cover you.
You do not move.
You do not run.
You lie down.
You lie in the dust.
You lie in the dark.
You feel the root on your arm.
It is not painful anymore.
It is warm.
It is soft.
It is like a hand.
It is like her hand.
It is like the hand you should have held.
It is like the hand you let go.
You close your eyes.
You breathe.
In.
Out.
The dust settles.
The silence returns.
It is a heavy silence.
It is a final silence.
You are alone.
You are together.
You are the root.
You are the crack.
You are the end.
The stone is quiet.
The stone is still.
The stone is dead.
