The Pale Shadows

The coat hangs on the hook by the door. It is blue. Not navy. Not sky. A deep, bruised blue that seems to hold the weight of the last winter. You see it first thing every morning. You see it last thing every night. It does not move. It does not change. It is there.

The room is cold. The windows are fogged with breath that is not yours. The air tastes of metal and old dust. You are here. You have always been here. Or so it feels. The walls breathe. They expand and contract. Slow. Like a sleeping lung. You press your hand to the plaster. It is warm. It is soft. It is skin.

You do not know your name anymore. You only know the coat. You know the thread count. You know the frayed edge on the left cuff. You know the stain on the lining. A dark red spot. Dried. Crusted. It looks like a berry. It looks like blood. You do not look at it. You look at the blue wool. You look at the buttons. They are mother-of-pearl. They shine in the dim light. They look like eyes. They watch you. You watch them back.

There is a door in the corner. It is small. It is white. It is painted with a faint, fading smile. You try the handle. It is cold. It does not turn. You push. You pull. You scream. No sound comes out. The walls absorb it. The silence is thick. It is heavy. It presses against your ears.

You remember a name. Margaret. No. That was someone else. You remember a voice. Low. Soft. Gentle. It said, *Stay.* It said, *Don't go.* It said, *You are safe here.* The voice is not here now. But the coat is. The coat remembers. The coat knows.

You sit on the floor. The wood is creaking. The floorboards are groaning. They are tired. They are old. They have held many people. They have held you. You are small. You are thin. Your ribs show. Your fingers are long. They are pale. They look like bones. You wrap your arms around your knees. You make yourself small. You make yourself safe.

The light changes. It turns gold. It turns orange. It is sunset. Or maybe it is sunrise. Time is broken here. Time is a loop. Time is a knot. You pull at the thread. It tightens. You stop. You breathe. In. Out. In. Out.

The door opens.

You did not open it. You did not touch it. The handle turns slowly. The door swings inward. The hinges do not squeak. The air rushes in. It is cold. It is sharp. It smells of rain. It smells of grass. It smells of life.

A figure stands in the doorway. It is tall. It is dark. It is shapeless. It has no face. It has no body. It is a shadow. It is a void. It is a hole in the world. It looks at you. It does not blink. It does not move. It waits.

You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your back is sore. You face the shadow. You do not run. You cannot run. There is nowhere to run to. You are in the place. The place is you. You are the place.

"Who are you?" you ask. Your voice is weak. It is thin. It is a whisper.

The shadow does not speak. It steps inside. The room gets colder. The light dims. The walls contract. The plaster tightens. You feel pain. It is a sharp pain. It is in your chest. It is in your throat. It is in your head.

You look at the coat. The blue wool ripples. The buttons turn. The stain on the lining grows. It spreads. It oozes. It is alive. It is hungry.

"Look," the shadow says. The voice is your voice. It is the voice of the woman who was you. It is the voice of the mother. It is the voice of the daughter. "Look at what you have done."

You look at the coat. You look at the stain. You remember.

You remember the hospital. The white tiles. The beeping monitors. The smell of antiseptic. You remember the baby. The baby was quiet. The baby was still. The baby did not cry. The doctor said, *It's over.* The nurse said, *I'm sorry.* The husband said nothing. He just stood there. He looked at the bed. He looked at the empty space. He looked at you. His eyes were hard. His eyes were cold. They were the eyes of the shadow.

You wanted to die. You wanted to leave. You wanted to be free. You wanted to be alone. You pulled the cord. You pulled the line. You pulled the breath from the room. You pulled the life from the child.

You did it.

You did it to save yourself. You did it to save the world from the pain. You did it to save the child from the suffering. You told yourself it was love. You told yourself it was mercy. You told yourself it was right.

The shadow steps closer. The cold bites your skin. The walls press in. You are shrinking. You are fading. You are becoming the shadow.

"It was not mercy," the shadow says. "It was fear. It was hate. It was you."

You look at the coat. The blue wool is dark now. It is black. The buttons are gone. The stain is gone. The coat is empty. It is a shell. It is a ghost.

You cry. The tears are hot. The tears are red. They fall on the floor. They soak into the wood. The wood drinks them. The wood grows. The flowers bloom. The walls crack. The light returns.

You see her.

She is young. She is pretty. She has brown hair. She has blue eyes. She is holding a baby. The baby is crying. The baby is alive. The baby is loud. The baby is strong.

It is you. It is the you that was. It is the you that could have been.

She looks at you. She looks through you. She does not see the shadow. She does not see the monster. She sees the pain. She sees the loss. She sees the love. It is a terrible love. It is a broken love. It is a love that killed to save. It is a love that saved to kill.

She reaches out. Her hand is warm. Her hand is soft. She touches your face. She wipes the tears. She touches the blue coat. She touches the place where the stain was.

"I know," she says. "I know it was hard. I know it was wrong. I know it was right. I know."

The shadow fades. The cold recedes. The room expands. The walls breathe out. The air is fresh. The light is bright.

You look at the coat. It is blue again. It is clean. It is whole. The buttons are there. The stain is gone. It is just a coat. It is just wool. It is just thread.

You pick it up. You put it on. It fits. It is warm. It is heavy. It is real.

You walk to the door. You open it. The rain is falling. The grass is green. The sky is grey. The world is wet. The world is cold. The world is alive.

You step out. The air hits your face. It is sharp. It is clear. It is true.

You do not look back. You do not look at the room. You do not look at the shadow. You do not look at the past. You look forward. You look at the road. The road is long. The road is hard. The road is yours.

You walk. You walk. You walk.

The coat hangs on your back. It is a weight. It is a shield. It is a memory. It is a scar. It is a life.

You are not free. You are not saved. You are not forgiven.

You are here.

You are alive.

And that is enough.
