The Trailer Park

She came to the Walmart to return a microwave. She was wearing old jeans and a grey T-shirt, her hair in a ponytail. Thirty-one, maybe. She looked tired but not sad—just tired.

"My husband's in the military," she said. "I can't do this alone."

I helped her with the form. Her name was Megan. Her husband Shawn was an Air Force drone operator in Guantanamo. "He flies drones from a laptop," she said. "Sits in a room in Texas and presses buttons in Afghanistan."

I came back the next week because her AC was broken. I fixed it—my dad had taught me. She made me iced tea. She told me about Shawn—how she watched every mission on her laptop in the kitchen, how the drone sat in her kitchen like a third person.

I helped her move things and found Shawn's stuff—an Air Force uniform, photos from before deployment, a letter: "To Megan and my unborn child. If I don't make it, let this child know I loved you."

In autumn, she told me she was pregnant. Shawn had frozen sperm before deployment. "It's what the military offers," she said. "He said if the kid could keep him on Earth, so be it."

In spring, I saw the news on the Walmart TV. A US drone hit the wrong target in Afghanistan. A family was killed. Not a crash—a mistake. Megan didn't cry. She sat in her trailer watching the TV for a long time.

Shawn wasn't killed. He was suspended pending investigation. The marriage ended. "He came back different," she told me. "Not the same man."

She moved out of the trailer park. I kept working nights at Walmart.

A year later, I got a letter from her—just an address and a baby photo. No check. No touching words. I put the photo in the Walmart locker. I don't know what happens next. I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

The fluorescent lights hummed. The locker door closed. I went back to the shelf I was stocking.
